Tom Dreesen, pioneering comedian and Frank Sinatra’s longtime opening act, dead at 86

Tom Dreesen, who along with partner Tim Reid formed one of America’s first interracial stand-up comedy duos and later spent years as Frank Sinatra’s opening act, died Wednesday. He was 86.

Dreesen died at his home in Los Angeles, according to publicist Lori De Waal. A cause of death was not provided.

After meeting in Chicago, Dreesen and Reid, who was Black, formed “Tim and Tom” in 1969. Against a backdrop of simmering racial tension, they used humor to address social issues and promote understanding between audiences of different backgrounds. They worked together until the mid-1970s. Reid went on to solo success playing DJ Venus Flytrap on the popular TV sitcom “WKRP in Cincinnati,” where Dreesen was a guest star.

“When I was a kid I found an album he and his comedy partner did called Tim and Tom and took it home and played it and it was one of the albums that changed the course of my life. So great,” comedian and filmmaker Mike Binder wrote on X.

After splitting with Reid, Dreesen honed a solo comedy act, making over 500 national TV appearances, including 60 visits to “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.” He also was a frequent guest and sometime guest host on “The Late Show with David Letterman.” Their friendship dated to the early 1970s when both worked at The Comedy Store in West Hollywood, California.

Dreesen’s final TV appearance came last week on “Comics Unleashed with Byron Allen,” which replaced Stephen Colbert’s canceled CBS late-night show.

Dreesen was Sinatra’s opening act for 14 years and became close with the entertainer.

“If he loved you, he worshipped the ground you walked on,” Dreesen told The Desert Sun newspaper in 2014. ”In a lot of ways, he was like a father to me. I didn’t have a father that really cared that much where I was and what I did. But Frank would give me advice and counsel, and then he was a buddy in a lot of ways. I thought the world of him.”

Dressen also toured with Sinatra’s fellow Rat Pack member Sammy Davis Jr., as well as Liza Minnelli, Smokey Robinson, Gladys Knight and Tony Orlando.

“He was one of the most brilliant comedians of all time. Tonight, he’ll once again be opening for Dean, Frank and Sammy,” Deana Martin, a daughter of Dean Martin, posted on X.

In 2008, he co-wrote the book “Tim and Tom: An American Comedy Act in Black and White” and in 2020 he authored his memoir.

Dreesen acted in such TV shows as “Columbo,” “Murder, She Wrote,” and “Touched by an Angel.” His film roles included “Spaceballs,” “Man on the Moon” and “Trouble With the Curve,” as well as the HBO movies “The Rat Pack” and “Lansky.”

Dreesen was active in charitable work, motivational speaking and veterans’ causes, including serving as ambassador for the Gary Sinise Foundation.

“America lost one of our great comedians and patriots, and I lost a dear friend,” Sinise posted on X.

He was born on Sept. 11, 1939, in Chicago and raised as one of eight children in suburban Harvey. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy at age 17 and after getting out in 1960 he returned home to work a series of jobs, including selling insurance.

Dreesen is survived by daughters Amy and Jennifer from his marriage to Maryellen Subock, which ended in divorce in 1984, as well as seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son Tommy.

Bo Bichette has more to give Mets after extending multi-hit streak

CINCINNATI — Bo Bichette was just getting started when he singled in the first inning Wednesday.

As has been the case lately, a Bichette hit spawns at least another from the veteran infielder. On this day he finished 3-for-4 with a walk, leading the offensive attack in the Mets’ 9-1 victory over the Reds.

It was a sixth straight multihit game for the sizzling Bichette.

“I am just competing and the ball is finding grass,” said Bichette, who owns a 1.039 OPS in June.

Bichette’s multihit game streak is the third longest in franchise history. Steve Henderson had eight straight such games in 1979 and David Wright had seven in 2011.

But Bichette said he’s not exactly in a zone where he believes a hit is forthcoming with each plate appearance.

“I think there’s a lot of at-bats right now that I can still have better at-bats,” Bichette said. “It’s not perfect. I think I am just making good adjustments from at-bat to at-bat and I think I can make adjustments better from pitch to pitch, but I am not going to complain too much.”

Juan Soto had a three-hit performance batting behind Bichette, giving the Mets another sampling of a tantalizing 1-2 punch.

“That’s what I envisioned,” Bichette said. “He’s a great hitter. I’m a great hitter, so it’s my vision. It’s fun scoring runs.”

Bichette’s resurgence has fueled a lineup still awaiting Francisco Lindor’s return from a left calf strain.

“[Bichette] is a really good player, and it was just a matter of time,” manager Carlos Mendoza said. “Now we are starting to see that consistently.”

A.J. Ewing’s diving catch in center field in the third inning helped Nolan McLean escape with only one unearned run allowed. The Reds had the bases loaded with one out

“It kept a lot of runs off the board and I think it gave us momentum going into the later parts of the game,” McLean said.

Ronny Mauricio is expected to begin a minor league rehab assignment this weekend, according to Mendoza. The infielder has been sidelined since May 3 with a left thumb fracture.

Arnold Schwarzenegger shares an inconvenient truth

When it comes to booting Big Oil from California, Democrats have been as ruthless as the Terminator.

Gavin Newsom & Co. have spent years scorning fossil fuels — heaping so many taxes, regulations and climate burdens on oil companies that most have downsized or moved elsewhere.

The result for California? A disaster.

Former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said as much this week: At his own climate summit in Austria, he rapped Democrats for chasing refineries out of state and importing oil to fill the supply gap, thus ensuring the very emissions they abhor.

Yes. They do that and more.

Thanks partly to green mania, California is among the least affordable states in the nation.

Far-left policies have inflated the price of gasoline, energy, appliances, housing, retail goods shipped by gas or diesel vehicles and other staples of California life.

Green decrees have also inhibited freedom by restricting consumer choice; strained the state energy grid, subjecting Californians to rolling blackouts; and left California dependent on foreign imports for 60% to 75% of residents’ oil needs.

In short, it’s green insanity.

And for what? California’s climate rules have made near-zero difference in global temperatures.

Los Angeles Times via Getty Images

Meanwhile, while he’s right about Dems’ war on oil, Schwarzenegger seems unaware that his own choices helped bring us to a crisis point.

During his eight years in office, the celebrity gov. helped install a range of green policies that over time have spiked costs; served Sacramento, not the public; and laid the groundwork for today’s green lunacy.

These include mandates on renewable energy, solar rooftops, “anti-sprawl” housing patterns, gasoline blends and more.

He also backed the state’s bullet-train boondoggle, sold partly on climate grounds, and signed (with great fanfare) the 2006 Global Warming Solutions Act, which bills business for emitting carbon while creating a multibillion-dollar de facto slush fund for Dems to spend on pet projects.

Gov. Newsom and his predecessor, Jerry Brown, have had a decade and a half to build on that framework.

They’ve hyped climate alarmism to signal virtue; deflect blame; demonize GOP “deniers”; raise money (apocalypse now!); enrich cronies and donors with taxpayer-funded green pork; control Californians’ choices; and of course, entrench their own power.

A clever political game, for a while. But the costs have caused deep harm, the world hasn’t ended, and the crying-wolf act has worn so thin it’s transparent.

Increasingly, residents see the state’s climate zeal for what it is: a green racket.

For the left, that is indeed “an inconvenient truth.”

Altadena residents push back on rebuilding plans after Eaton Fire

Anger and anxiety filled a packed town hall Tuesday as hundreds of Altadena residents pushed back against proposals that could transform single-family neighborhoods devastated by the Eaton Fire.

Nearly 450 people attended the meeting, where residents learned that 49% of properties sold in the burn zone since the wildfire have been purchased by developers, a revelation that drew an audible gasp from the crowd.

The debate centers on California housing laws, including SB 9 and SB 1123, which can allow developers to build up to 10 housing units, as high as three stories, on a single residential lot.

Residents warned that increased density could strain water supplies, electrical infrastructure, parking and evacuation routes while permanently changing the character of Altadena.

“We are a single-family residential community who lost everything and now we’re losing our community,” one resident said during public testimony.

Another speaker called on Gov. Gavin Newsom to intervene.

“You got to push Newsom to do something,” the resident said. “We need more from him.”

The meeting’s primary focus was Senate Bill 1090, known as the “Keep Altadena Land in Altadena Hands Act,” introduced by State Sen. Sasha Renee Perez.

The proposal would create a five-year moratorium on state density laws such as SB 9 and SB 1123 in designated Altadena ZIP codes, aiming to protect fire-damaged properties from outside corporate real estate speculators.

Despite the intense discussion, the Altadena Town Council did not vote on the measure or take an official position during the Tuesday meeting.

Council Chair Nick Arnzen said members would consider public feedback before deciding their stance in the coming days.

Questions were also raised about whether the projects being proposed would actually create affordable housing.

Nick Arnzen. Altadena Town Council

“My question is, are these developers really building affordable ‘starter’ homes?” Kamala Almanzar said. “Altadena families will be priced out and we will look like and feel like West LA.”

Kenneth McPheeters criticized what he viewed as a lack of planning for rebuilding after the fire.

“When we burned up, maybe they should have had a plan put together so people could build homes in some kind of conformity,” he  said.

One project discussed during the meeting involves a property on Punahou Street that is being marketed with approved plans for a multi-unit development alongside a small single-family home.

The county has already voided more than a dozen applications submitted under SB 1123, finding that the law only applies in built out areas.

Newsom previously paused SB 9 in the Palisades Fire burn zone because the area falls within a high fire hazard zone.

No similar exemption has been granted for Altadena, where roughly 70% of the community lies outside the state’s designated high fire zone.

California is home to 6 of the worst-run major cities in the US

Several major California metropolitan areas have found themselves at the bottom of a new study measuring the best and worst-run cities in America.

WalletHub analyzed 148 of the biggest American metropolitan areas, trying to determine how efficiently the local governments run each city.

They developed a “Quality of Services” score based on 36 different metrics across six key areas – Financial Stability, Education, Health, Safety, Economy and Infrastructure & Pollution.

No California city was found in the top 25 of these cities, though six cities were found in the bottom 15, with San Francisco ranked dead last, repeating the worst rank from last year.

It was followed by Oakland (145th), Fresno (141st), Long Beach (140st), Stockton (137th) and Los Angeles (136th).

Other California cities found near the bottom the list include Riverside (131st), Sacramento (128th), San Jose (127th), Bakersfield (125th), Anaheim (118th), Santa Ana (115th), Modesto (114th), San Diego (110th) and Fremont (88th).

The only California city in the top half of the list was Huntington Beach at 38th.

The study compared each of the Quality of Services scores for each city and then compared them to each city’s per-capita budget.

It was followed by Oakland (145th), Fresno (141st), Long Beach (140st), Stockton (137th) and Los Angeles (136th). LACMTA/Gayle Anderson

While San Francisco ranked 41st in Quality of Services, they were last in Total Budget Per Capita and last overall on the list.

San Francisco also tied for last place in a number of other metrics like Long Term Outstanding Debt Per Capita (with Salt Lake City, Denver and Oakland), and was alone in last place in High School Graduation Rate.

Conversely, Anaheim and Huntington Beach both tied for fourth place for highest High School Graduation Rate, while San Francisco was also the best city for Infant Mortality Rate, while Huntington Beach, Anaheim and Santa Ana tied for third.

Oakland also found itself tied for last place in Violent Crime Rate with Baltimore, Little Rock, Arkansas, Detroit and Memphis.

San Francisco also tied for last place in a number of other metrics like Long Term Outstanding Debt Per Capita (with Salt Lake City, Denver and Oakland), and was alone in last place in High School Graduation Rate. AP

Fremont found itself atop two different metrics – best Median Household Income when adjusted for cost-of-living and % of Population in Poverty, with Huntingon Beach tied for third and San Jose in fifth.

However, several California cities – Oakland, San Francisco, San Jose, Anaheim, Long Beach and Los Angeles – tied for worst in Quality of Roads.

Numerous California cities were also at the bottom of the Air Pollution ranks, with Riverside in dead last, followed by Santa Ana, Los Angeles, Long Beach and Huntington Beach.

However, three California cities were actually at the top of the Air Pollution list as well, with Fremont, Oakland and San Francisco all tying for the top spot.

The top five best-run cities were Provo, Utah, Nampa, Idaho, Manchester, New Hampshire, Boise, Idaho and Nashua, New Hampshire.

Joe Rogan eviscerates UFC Freedom 250 critics by telling them to ‘shut the f–k up’

Joe Rogan blasted critics of the UFC White House event during Wednesday’s episode of his podcast, defending the event as a nonpartisan and unprecedented patriotic event.

President Donald Trump marked his 80th birthday in the run-up to America’s 250th anniversary with a celebration on the South Lawn, where 14 fighters from around the world competed inside a wire-mesh cage during the UFC Freedom 250 spectacle.

The estimated 4,300 people in attendance, which included about 1,200 active-duty service members, greeted the president with loud cheers as the occasional “Happy Birthday” was shouted from the crowd.

The $60 million event kicked off with the Marine Band’s performance of the national anthem, sung by country star Zac Brown, and was capped off with a flyover by the Navy’s Blue Angels and Air Force Thunderbirds.

Rogan spoke to author Chase Hughes on his podcast on Wednesday, recalling the incredible fights he saw the past weekend, where he claimed that in addition to the 4,300 official attendees, there were an additional 85,000 watching on massive screens just outside the event venue.

“It was insane. Just the magnitude of it was insane,” Rogan noted. He said that while he is a hyperbolic person by nature, “That was the wildest experience that I’ve ever had in my 20 whatever years of calling combat sports. There’s nothing even close. Nothing even close. It was the greatest night of fights of all time. And it was the only night in the history of the sport where every single fight ended by knockout. “

He added further that he actually had to persuade some people to show up in the first place, noting, “I talked a bunch of people into going that didn’t want to. Like Shane Gillis was thinking about not going. I’m like, ‘Bro, you got to go. It’s going to be epic. It’s going to be a once ever thing. Not a once in a lifetime. Once in anybody’s lifetime. It’s never happened before. It’s probably never going to happen again.’”

“Probably not,” Hughes agreed.

“No,” Rogan said. “But that’s something you have to see and experience.”

The host went on to lament that “so many people are trying to make it a partisan thing. Like they’re mad at people for being there. Like, ‘Oh, you support Trump.’ Like, it’s a f—ing fight at the White House. Doesn’t mean you endorse foreign policy. Like, shut the f— up. Just please. Just please stop.”

“And again, it’s this thing, the ego thing where people are just — they just want so badly—and on both sides for sure,” Rogan continued. “You know, the right celebrates this as a win for masculinity and patriotism and all these different things. Like, okay, settle down. Everybody settle down. You should all be together.”

In-N-Out debuts new pop-up in Lima, Peru for the first time ever abroad

An iconic Southern California fast food chain expanded its brand to South America with a new pop-up shop that debuted on Tuesday.

In-N-Out unveiled a new pop-up in Lima, Peru on Tuesday, which the Irvine, California-based company confirmed via email.

“I can confirm that we recently held an event in Lima, Peru, and had a great experience. This event was a part of our global series to build brand awareness and test the local marketplace,” a rep told The California Post.

The pop-up was held at a Lima burger/BBQ restaurant called Bro BBQ, open for just a few hours from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

A local Instagram user dubbed frnccsco captured video from the event, which opened with a shot of the menu, serving the beloved Double-Double, plus hamburgers, cheeseburgers and animal style and protein style burgers, along with potato chips.

Fans could also purchase hats and t-shirts, with the video showing employees handing out the iconic In-N-Out paper hats to patrons, and customers chowing down on the tasty burgers.

Another patron was a Southern California native who shared their experience on Reddit, along with more photos from the pop-up.

A Redditor dubbed ADinner0fOnions posted on the In-N-Out Reddit page, revealing that they had been in Peru “for awhile” and “had to check it out.”

“Unfortunately had to bail to catch a flight and wasn’t able to get a burger so I gave my wristband to someone else… but they let me in to check it out and take some pics!” the Redditor said.

“Talked with the staff and they told me that they travel the world setting up popups and always only give 24 hour notice for when they’re setting up shop,” they added.

“Seems like an awesome gig. Also REALLY awesome seeing 1000+ folks lining up to give in n out a try. Burger diplomacy in action,” they continued.

They concluded by stating, “Aside from family and such, in n out is one of the things I miss the most about back home. Super cool to see here. Viva in n out!!!”

It’s unclear if there are any plans for future pop-ups in South America, or a more permanent fast food footprint on the continent for In-N-Out.

SF Giants players quietly rebel against Pride Night caps

San Francisco Giants team members committed the unpardonable sin of daring to think for themselves on Pride Night.

Instead of donning the team’s rainbow-branded caps like good little allies, they quietly pushed back, and in doing so, triggered one of the more revealing meltdowns in politics this year.

Landen Roupp, JT Brubaker and Ryan Walker wore the special black “Pride Night” ballcaps with a rainbow “SF” logo, but scribbled “Genesis 9:12-16” next to it. Sam Hentges simply said, “no thanks,” and wore the plain team cap.

The Bible verse referred to? It’s the one where God, after the Flood, hangs His bow in the sky as a universal covenant with Noah, all humanity and “every living creature.”

It’s the ancient text that predates Gilbert Baker’s 1978 rainbow flag by a few thousand years.

San Francisco Giants team members committed the unpardonable sin of daring to think for themselves on Pride Night. John Hefti-Imagn Images

Roupp calmly explained it was about God’s faithfulness and mercy. No rants, no slurs — just scripture.

Enter state Sen. Scott Wiener, congressional candidate for Nancy Pelosi’s old seat and Guardian of the LGBTQ+ Rainbow. Wiener didn’t merely disagree, he went full activist diva.

He denounced the biblical inscriptions as “homophobic” hijacking, sneered that the players chose Pride Night on purpose to “target” the community, and accused the Giants of running a “homophobia exemption” program.

In a masterclass of tolerance, Wiener declared that while people can hold beliefs that “dehumanize others,” they have no right to express them at a work event. Translation: Your Torah is fine in private, but don’t you dare bring it near our branded merchandise.

Wiener capped off his performance by telling Vice President JD Vance and other critics to “go back into your cave.”

Because nothing says “compassionate public servant” like Wiener mocking people of faith while demanding total ideological conformity. Especially LGBT conformity.

MLB issued verbal warnings for the shocking crime of writing on a hat, rules they conveniently enforce — except when the message aligns with approved narratives. AP

This is the same legislator who positions himself as a “coalition-builder,” except when anyone dares suggest the rainbow might belong to more than one political tribe.

In Wiener’s world, the symbol that Mother Nature and the Bible have claimed for millennia suddenly became exclusive LGBTQ+ real estate in 1978, and any clarification or reclamation attempt is heresy.

Here we have millionaire athletes in a multibillion-dollar league being lectured by a San Francisco politician that peacefully referencing the original Owner’s Manual for the rainbow constitutes bigotry.

Talk about colonizing a covenant.

The Giants, to their mild credit, mumbled something about “pain and anger” in the community while quietly supporting player choice.

MLB issued verbal warnings for the shocking crime of writing on a hat, rules they conveniently enforce — except when the message aligns with approved narratives.

Thankfully, adults have shown up.

Missouri Attorney General Catherine L. Hanaway demanded MLB stop discriminating against the players’ faith and promised action if they didn’t. Florida AG James Uthmeier signaled his office would investigate the religious liberty implications. Sen. Josh Hawley fired off a formal letter hunting for patterns of anti-Christian bias.

Vance summed up the vibe perfectly: “Trump won. We don’t have to do this anymore.”

And now, the Archdiocese of San Francisco has even weighed in: “People of faith should not be compelled to hide or suppress their sincerely held religious convictions in public life, including in the world of professional sports,” spokesman Peter Marlow told The California Post.

The Giants pitchers modeled something refreshingly normal. AP

Meanwhile, red-state AGs, hardly known as right-wing theocrats, are the ones defending basic rights.

This wasn’t about hatred. It was about pluralism in the face of enforced orthodoxy.

The rainbow isn’t a registered trademark of the Pride industrial complex. It appears after storms for everyone — believer and skeptic, gay and straight, for Wiener and the Giants pitchers alike. Treating a Bible verse as toxic waste while sacralizing a corporate flag reveals the authoritarian insecurity at the heart of modern identity politics.

The Giants pitchers modeled something refreshingly normal: Compete hard, honor your beliefs without fanfare and refuse to pretend the Bible is subordinate to 21st century branding.

Wiener’s unhinged reaction, by contrast, exposed the brittle extremism lurking behind the rainbow veneer. When a sitting legislator equates ancient scripture with hate and mocks dissenters as cave dwellers, it’s not the players who look bigoted and intolerant.

The state attorney generals stepping in are reminding powerful institutions that constitutional rights don’t evaporate at the ballpark gate. The pitchers’ quiet stand may do more for genuine diversity than any mandatory Pride cap ever could.

Pastors for Trump founder Jackson Lahmeyer drops congressional bid amid sexting scandal with former Miss Oklahoma

A day after advancing to a Republican runoff, megachurch pastor Jackson Lahmeyer suspended his congressional campaign on Wednesday amid a flirtatious texting scandal with a former Miss Oklahoma.

Lahmeyer, who is married with five children, received President Trump’s backing, but also faced a firestorm over his past flirtatious messages with the beauty queen, one of his former staffers.

“After prayerful consideration with my wife, Kendra, and my team over the last twenty four hours, I’ve made the difficult decision to suspend my campaign for Congress,” Lahmeyer said in a statement.

“I do not want to be a distraction to my family, my church, and the great people of Oklahoma’s 1st Congressional District, who deserve a strong conservative voice representing them in Washington.”

Just prior to suspending his campaign, Trump took to Truth Social and switched his endorsement to Oklahoma state Rep. Mark Tedford.

Tedford had topped Lahmeyer in the first round, with 32% support, compared to the pastor’s 26%. The seat had been held by Rep. Kevin Hern (R-Okla.), who is vying for Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin’s old Senate seat.

“I greatly appreciate Jackson Lahmeyer’s hard work under difficult circumstances,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “[W]hen it comes to the current Congressional race for Oklahoma’s 1st Congressional District, I Will be supporting America First Patriot, Mark Tedford. Mark is Pro-Trump and MAGA all the way!”

The president had initially backed Lahmeyer, citing his work co-founding the Pastors for Trump religious leader coalition in 2022.

Mark Tedford is now favored to win the race for Oklahoma’s 1st Congressional District seat. Facebook/Mark Tedford for Congress

But the Daily Mail published a piece on Sunday detailing how Lahmeyer, a self-described “MAGA Warrior,” sent racy text messages to former Miss Oklahoma USA Caitlin Simmons Key — one of his former campaign fundraisers.

The report included messages inviting her to his hotel room and visiting a strip club around 1 a.m. Key used to be a fundraiser for his campaign. In one message, he wrote, “I enjoyed those lips.”

“Jackson if u become congressman & if ever got caught u would be headlines,” she wrote in one of the messages.

At one point, Key pressed Lahmeyer to rethink his marriage and asked him about considering a divorce, which he promptly dismissed.

“U r in love with me and we don’t even have sex,” she texted him.

His wife found out around Mother’s Day and reportedly slammed the ex-beauty queen, writing, “You are a home wrecking whore. Did you enjoy ruining our family.”

Lahmeyer’s wife claimed he came clean to her, after she questioned a Facebook post from Key, who shared Trump’s endorsement of the “MAGA Warrior,” noting she was ready to “get to DC.”

Key reportedly continued to receive payments from the campaign despite being cut off by Lahmeyer. The pastor claimed he told his wife that he had gotten way too close to Key, but it wasn’t romantic.

“There’s a real problem with the fact that he’s married and a pastor,” Key told the outlet.

“There is a responsibility when you are leading people in the name of Christ to hold yourself to a higher standard.”

LA City Council advances noncitizen voting proposal for ballot

Los Angeles voters could soon decide whether noncitizens should have a path to voting in city and school board elections.

The City Council voted 10-5 Thursday to advance one of the most controversial proposals in a sweeping Charter reform package headed for the November ballot.

The measure, introduced by Councilmembers Hugo Soto-Martínez, will give immigrants who live, work, pay taxes and raise families in Los Angeles a voice in decisions that directly affect their lives.

“It just does not make sense to me that someone who moves to Los Angeles for a temporary job has more of a voice than a parent who has been here for decades raising their children through public schools,” Soto-Martínez said during Thursday’s debate.

Opponents argued the proposal is moving forward before city leaders know whether it can actually be implemented.

Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez questioned how Los Angeles could create a noncitizen voting program when the city’s elections are administered by Los Angeles County.

She warned the proposal could require a separate election process and create new costs that have not yet been studied.

“I don’t even know that the county has actually been consulted in their ability to implement such a concept,” Rodriguez said.

Rodriguez also cautioned that city leaders could be making promises they are not yet able to keep.

“I have apprehension of making false promises that give the suggestion that we’re able to advance something without even further vetting the ability to implement this,” Rodriguez said.

“I don’t want to pretend that people are going to take away from this that this is going to be available to them, and it’s not, because it’s not been baked out.”

During the debate, city officials acknowledged there is currently no framework in place for noncitizen voting and confirmed substantial work would still be required before any program could be created.

Officials said Los Angeles would likely need to take over administration of its own elections if such a system were eventually adopted.

The measure now moves forward as part of the larger Charter reform package expected to appear before voters in November 2026.

The noncitizen voting proposal was not the only high-profile measure advanced by city leaders.

Council members also voted to move forward with a separate Charter amendment that would give the City Council greater authority over the Los Angeles Police Commission, including the ability to override certain commission actions.

The Council also voted to place a Charter amendment championed by Rodriguez that would double the city’s minimum funding commitment for parks over the next decade.

Rodriguez called the measure a “monumental win” for neighborhoods and families, noting Los Angeles ranked 93rd out of the nation’s 100 largest cities in the latest Trust for Public Land ParkScore rankings.

The City Attorney will now draft language for the proposed ballot measures, which must then be approved by the City Council before going before voters.
