Scottie Scheffler’s US Open motivation isn’t tied to Grand Slam history

Scottie Scheffler would be happy to complete the career Grand Slam on his first attempt, but if you’re thinking it’s his main motivation heading into the U.S. Open this week, you’d be sorely mistaken.

The world No. 1 arrived on the east end of Long Island one major shy of joining the ranks of some of golf’s biggest names, after having won the Masters twice, a PGA Championship and the Open Championship.

On Sunday, Scheffler could find himself on the verge of winning the only missing major from the list on his 30th birthday, which also happens to fall on Father’s Day.

But Scheffler has a different perspective on what his main motivation is heading into this week’s tournament.

“For me, would it be a dream to win the U.S. Open? Of course. But at the end of the day, the Grand Slam has never been a motivating factor for me,” Scheffler said Tuesday. “I always just wanted to be the best version of myself, and that got me this far. So when it comes to this golf tournament, I’m going to step on the first tee and remind myself I’ve done everything I possibly could in order to play well.

“Now it’s just a matter of going out there and trying to execute and kind of going back to enjoying the competition versus feeling like you have to win for some reason.”

Should Scheffler find himself hoisting the U.S. Open championship trophy on Sunday afternoon, he would join Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy as the only seven men to win all four major championships during their careers.

But Scheffler is taking a more cerebral attitude toward the potentially historic milestone, understanding there is still more to accomplish in his career.

It was a similar tone that McIlroy echoed earlier this year when speaking to reporters ahead of the Truist Championship, when the Northern Irishman said that he “had to remember” that he still had a whole career ahead of him after he completed his career Grand Slam in 2025.

“If I win this tournament, that would be amazing, but I think then I show up the next week, and it’s like, ‘OK, now Scottie’s won the Grand Slam, he’s won all these golf tournaments. Now where do we go from here?’ ” Scheffler said. “So no matter what, I think as a player and as a professional athlete, you’re never going to live up to the expectations of people. I think sometimes that’s a little bit of the fallacy in our sport is, if I win the U.S. Open, then I’m going to be satisfied. I’ve won all the tournaments, and my career is essentially over, and I’ve accomplished everything I could want to accomplish. But I think the goalposts are always just moved further and further.”

Scheffler hasn’t managed to get over the hump at the U.S. Open in eight appearances, having finished tied for seventh last year at Oakmont. His best finish came in 2022, when he tied for second and has been a top 10 finisher in four of the last five U.S. Opens.

The PGA Tour star couldn’t pinpoint one U.S. Open result where he felt that he should have won, but noted that “second is not always that bad, but man, does it frickin’ hurt at the same time.”

Scheffler hasn’t won a tournament this year since The American Express in January; however, he does have second-place finishes at the Masters, as well as the RBC Heritage and the Cadillac Championship.

While Scheffler has felt “close most of the year,” Shinnecock could provide a unique opportunity for him.

Through the first two days of the practice rounds, wind has been a constant part of the conversation surrounding the course. While the wind was not as harsh on Tuesday as it had been on Monday, it was still a factor, and it’s expected to be one later in the week when the tournament begins.

Having grown up in Texas, Scheffler is well-versed in the intricacies of playing on windy courses.

“I think a lot of it is mostly just experience, especially in different types of winds,” he said. “The wind at Pebble Beach is different than the wind here, and it’s different than the wind at home. … When it’s hot, the ball doesn’t get as affected by the wind. Here, the wind is a bit heavier. I wouldn’t say it’s as heavy as a Pebble Beach, but it is a pretty heavy wind. I think a lot of that you just learn from experience and playing in all different kinds of conditions.”

Mark Cuban: ‘Real simple’ reason we let Jalen Brunson leave for Knicks

Mark Cuban has admitted why the Mavericks completely whiffed on letting Jalen Brunson walk to the Knicks.

“It was really, really simple. We didn’t see JB, as what he would become,” Cuban, the owner of the Mavericks from 2000 to 2023, said in a recent appearance on “House of Haymaker.”

Brunson spent four years with the Mavericks, averaging more than 15 points per game only in his final year, the 2021-22 season.

Dallas had an option to extend the guard for $55 million prior to his breakout season, but opted to wait to see if his value would change after the year.

Cuban said he thought he would have a chance to match other teams’ offers, but Brunson accepted the Knicks‘ four-year, $104 million deal before talking to the Mavericks.

“He showed that star potential when Luka [Doncic] got hurt, and he won those games against Utah for us, but we were trying to get a star to put next to Luka, and JB’s star had not risen yet,” Cuban said.

It’s safe to say Brunson’s star has risen now after he just won the NBA Finals MVP in the Knicks’ first NBA championship in 53 years.

The former Villanova Wildcat averaged 32.6 points, 4.6 assists, 4.2 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game in the Finals, including a 45-point night to seal the series in Game 5.

That mirrors the success Brunson had during his entire stint with the Knicks, as he has averaged 26.3 points, 6.8 assists and 3.4 rebounds in 284 games with New York.

The guard was a part of the championship run in more ways than one; the court, though, he turned down approximately $113 million in guaranteed money when he signed a four-year, $156.5 million contract extension in 2024.

This allowed the Knicks to afford guys like OG Anunoby, Mikal Bridges and Karl-Anthony Towns.

Knicks’ Jalen Brunson fired back at ‘1A’ critics in trading card

Jalen Brunson might not be clapping back at critics with words, but he’s not against putting it in writing.

The Knicks captain, fresh off leading New York to its first title in 53 years, has refused to address naysayers who have said his 6-foot-2 stature would prevent him from leading a team to a title.

“I didn’t respond to them then, I’m damn sure not gonna respond to them now,” Brunson said moments after New York’s NBA Finals-clinching performance in Game 5 on Saturday.

But a recently surfaced, one-of-a-kind trading card depicting the Knicks superstar features his autograph, along with the inscription “1A” — a nod to comments made by some people around the game who questioned whether he could ever be the best player on a championship team.

The 1-of-1 card, which came from the 2023-24 season, is part of Panini’s National Treasures series highlighting players’ “notable nicknames.”

The timing of Brunson signing the card aligns with WNBA legend Becky Hammon, the current head coach of the WNBA’s Aces, shooting down the notion of the Villanova alum being a “1A” caliber star.

“They’re, they’re well-coached, they’re going to be on their defensive game, but at the end of the day, they don’t have a dude,” Hammon said during a December 2023 appearance on ESPN’s “NBA Today.”

“You gotta have a dude, you gotta have a 1A dude, and they’re missing that at the end of the day if we’re just getting down to brass tacks.”

Co-panelist and ex-NBA player Kendrick Perkins refuted Hammon’s remarks, claiming Brunson is that type of player.

“No, he’s too small,” Hammon shot back.

Hammon has been far from the lone critic, with Warriors star Draymond Green and sports personality Colin Cowherd among those to doubt Brunson’s championship pedigree.

However, that tune has changed in light of this year’s playoff run, capped off by Brunson notching 45 points in last Saturday’s Game 5, securing Finals MVP and his first NBA championship.

Given recent sales of other 1-of-1 Brunson autograph cards, this “1A” inscription will likely command a pretty penny if and when it becomes available for sale.

On Tuesday alone, two different one-of-a-kind autographed Brunson cards sold on eBay, with a 2024 Panini card featuring his signature and a piece of his game-worn jersey selling for $18,600.

Other sales this week have seen similar Brunson cards sell for anywhere from $4,999 to $25,000, according to CardLadder.

South Carolina personal trainer Elena Moore goes missing, last spotted walking toward wooded area

Police in South Carolina have released new photos and details in their hunt for a woman who vanished last week.

Elena Katherine Moore, 39, has not been seen since she left a Planet Fitness gym in Lexington, a suburb west of Columbia, on Thursday evening, according to the Lexington Police Department.

Authorities said Moore signed in at Planet Fitness around 6:40 p.m. and was later seen walking away from the facility toward a wooded area behind a nearby Lowe’s Home Improvement store.

Police said Tuesday afternoon that newly obtained video shows Moore walking through the Publix parking lot at 100 Old Cherokee Road on Thursday. Video shows her walking toward Old Cherokee Road at 9:17 p.m., police said, wearing the same olive-green zip-up hoodie with black athletic pants that she was seen wearing as she left Planet Fitness.

She was reported missing the following day.

Police said they are releasing new photographs of Moore to increase the likelihood that someone recognizes her and remembers encountering her in the past few days. Those newly released photographs include images that were captured on a front door camera a week before Moore’s disappearance.

Moore was last seen on Thursday. Lexington Police Dept.

Moore works as a personal trainer and her sudden absence is “very out of character,” police told ABC News.

Lauren Beasley, a friend of Moore’s, told Fox News Digital that she last spoke with the missing woman a month ago, recalling that she seemed completely normal.

“She did not say anything personal about anything she was going through. She got married last year, but she didn’t say anything about her relationship or work or anything personal,” Beasley said.

Beasley added that Moore stopped posting to social media about a month ago, which isn’t normal.

She was reported missing on Friday. Lexington Police Dept.

“She is very active on social media so her going radio silent for the last month is out of character,” she said.

Moore’s husband, Brannon Slice, said in a comment to a now-deleted Facebook post that his wife is “not well.”

Investigators on Friday deployed a drone and conducted a preliminary search of the area where Moore was last seen but found no sign of her.

Lexington Police Department Public Information Officer Missy Silcox told Fox News Digital that foul play isn’t suspected, and said there are no searches planned for Moore on Tuesday.

Moore’s husband, Brannon Slice, said in a comment to a now-deleted Facebook post that his wife is “not well.” Lexington Police Dept.

On Monday, Lexington police joined multiple local and state agencies in a more extensive search of wooded areas behind the Lowe’s store and Planet Fitness. The operation included assistance from the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department, South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, Department of Natural Resources and other emergency response agencies.

Police emphasized that the search was not a recovery effort but a methodical attempt to eliminate one possible location where Moore could be.

“No trace of Ms. Moore was found during the operation,” Lexington Police Chief Terrence Green said in an update.

Moore is described as a White female standing 5 feet, 7 inches tall and weighing about 120 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes. She was last seen wearing an olive-green zip-up hoodie and black athletic pants. Investigators said they are uncertain whether she has her cellphone.

Authorities asked anyone with information about Moore’s whereabouts to contact detectives at 803-358-7271 or Midlands Crimestoppers.

Jelly Roll’s daughter Bailee Ann breaks silence on his divorce from Bunnie Xo

Jelly Roll’s daughter has a strong opinion about all the attention her dad’s shocking divorce from longtime wife Bunnie Xo is getting.

“Oh & one more thing I am disgusted at how invested everyone is in a very clearly private family matter,” Bailee Ann wrote in an expiring TikTok post Tuesday.

The 18-year-old called it “fkn crazy” people are so invested and told those following closely along to “worry bout your house – not mine.”

“I’m not speaking on it – yet,” she cryptically concluded.

Jelly Roll — who welcomed Bailee Ann and son Noah Buddy, 9, from previous relationships — quietly filed for divorce from Bunnie on May 18 in Williamson County, Tennessee.

The “Son of a Sinner” singer, 41, cited “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for his split from the “Dumb Blonde” podcast host, 46, whom he married in August 2016.

In the court documents, Jelly Roll noted that he and Bunnie plan to file an agreement dividing their assets and debts.

Signs of the split began swirling when the Grammy winner was spotted without his wedding ring at the 2026 CMA Fest in Nashville in early June. He’d also shared social media posts without it, too.

For her part, Bunnie has been dropping cryptic social media posts in recent weeks, including one about “women’s intuition” and one shading her “trash” exes — with the most recent being about “getting her sparkle back.”

Most recently, a moving truck was spotted outside Jelly Roll and Bunnie’s shared residence in Tennessee. At this time, it’s unclear whose items were being moved from their marital home.

The real reason behind the now-estranged couple’s split, sources recently claimed to the Daily Mail, is because he’s leaning into his newfound Christian faith, which is clashing with the former sex worker’s racier tendencies.

However, the exes were trying to have a baby in recent months.

Bailee Ann is super tight with her country superstar father, who shared an Instagram post last month celebrating both her 18th birthday and her high school graduation — the latter which he admitted he wasn’t able to achieve.

“When we talk about generational curses and breaking them, you literally are the epitome of that. You are kind, smart, caring, loving, adventurous, funny, sassy, honest,” he wrote. “To put it plainly you were everything I have never been.”

He added that while some people are born to walk or born to run, Bailee Ann is one of the “very few” who are born to fly.

“I can’t wait until I’m posting about how proud I am with you graduating college,” he concluded. “I can’t wait until I’m posting pictures from your wedding. I can’t wait to see the woman you end up becoming.”

Lionel Messi opens up World Cup for Argentina with hat trick

Anything you do, I can do better.

Just hours after France star Kylian Mbappé jumped Lionel Messi for the third-most goals scored in World Cup history at 13, the Argentine answered back — three times.

Messi opened up his first game at the 2026 World Cup with a hat trick in a brilliant performance in Kansas City.

In the 17th minute, a pass from the back line found Messi in stride, and he cut through the defense. Messi took his chance just outside the 18-yard box, and the ball floated just above Algeria keeper Luca Zidane’s mitts, giving Argentina a 1-0 lead.

But he wasn’t done yet.

In the 60th minute, after Alexis Mac Allister was denied, the rebound was cashed in by Messi, increasing Argentina’s lead to 2-0.

He found the back of the net again 16 minutes later to complete his first-ever World Cup hat trick. He was subbed out in the 80th minute before he could score again.

Messi has now tied Miroslav Klose’s record of 16 goals scored all-time at the World Cup.

Both Messi and Mbappe — who scored twice Tuesday — have ample time in this World Cup to set new records, as both Argentina and France are favorites to advance to the knockout stage. For the first time, the World Cup features a round-of-32 stage, giving players an extra game to tally a goal.

The 2026 World Cup is the 38-year-old Messi’s sixth and possibly last of his illustrious career. Messi was a key player in bringing the World Cup back to Argentina in 2022 for the first time since 1986.

The opposite can be said for the 27-year-old Mbappé, who has only appeared in 16 World Cup matches, scoring 14 goals in the process. Mbappé helped his team rally from a disappointing half on Tuesday afternoon by scoring two goals in the second half. Those goals, plus one from Bradley Barcola, gave France a convincing 3-1 win over Senegal.

Mbappé and France are lined up to play Iraq, while Argentina and Messi will face Austria next, with both games coming on Monday.

Kodai Senga’s clunker dooms Mets in during loss to Reds

CINCINNATI — Kodai Senga really needed a mulligan on his first inning back with the Mets, but it turns out do-overs aren’t allowed.

The beleaguered right-hander had an ugly opening frame Tuesday in his return to a major league mound and followed with three improved innings, but by then it was too late.

Senga’s clunker, coupled with a mediocre offensive showing, sank the Mets in their 5-3 loss to the Reds. The Mets lost their second straight and now just hope to avoid a series sweep.

Thrust into the rotation after Christian Scott was placed on the injured list with a right hip impingement, Senga allowed two homers for four runs in the first inning. Overall, he allowed four runs on two hits and four walks with five strikeouts over four innings.

It was the kind of performance the Mets have received all too often from Senga, who was returning from a back injury that kept him on the injured list for six weeks.

Manager Carlos Mendoza was ejected in the seventh inning for arguing with plate umpire Carlos Torres’ strike zone. The Mets were out of ABS challenges after losing both by the second inning.

Senga walked Blake Dunn and JJ Bleday in succession to begin his night before Sal Stewart blasted a 2-1 sinker over the left field fence for a three-run homer. Senga got two outs in the inning — one on A.J. Ewing’s diving catch that robbed Nathaniel Lowe — before Spencer Steer homered to bury the Mets in a 4-0 hole.

Bo Bichette’s RBI single in the third sliced the Reds’ lead to 4-1. Brett Baty was hit by a pitch leading off and Francisco Alvarez singled with one out before the sizzling Bichette delivered for his 41st RBI this season.

Bichette began the day on a 10-for-21 (.476) tear. But after a walk to Juan Soto that loaded the bases, Jared Young was retired to kill the Mets’ rally.

The Mets loaded the bases in the fourth with two outs — Ewing and Alvarez both walked with another Baty plunking sandwiched in between — before Carson Benge was retired.

In the fifth, Bichette delivered a leadoff single but Young grounded into an inning-ending double play after Soto struck out.

Stewart’s RBI single in the fifth against Cionel Pérez widened the Mets deficit to 5-1. Edwin Arroyo doubled leading off and Dunn singled before Stewart’s hit.

Mark Vientos smashed a pinch-hit two-run homer in the sixth that pulled the Mets to within 5-3.

Marcus Semien singled in the inning and reached second on Steer’s error in right field before Vientos went deep with two outs.

The Mets had their best chance to tie in the eighth, following walks to Semien and Baty to begin the inning, but Vientos and Alvarez struck out before Benge was retired.

Giants’ game vs. Braves postponed after unofficial delay of almost 2 hours

ATLANTA — More than two dozen groundskeepers worked nonstop for over an hour, pouring pounds and pounds of dry sod across the rain-soaked infield, pitcher’s mound and home plate.

More than an hour and a half later, they rolled the tarp out for the first time.

The result was the opening game of the Giants’ road trip against the Braves being suspended after only an inning and a half of play and a wait of nearly three times that long.

They will resume play in the bottom of the second as part of a double-header Wednesday with Game 1 set to begin at 11 a.m. PT and the second game at its regularly scheduled 4:15 p.m.

“It’s not ideal,” manager Tony Vitello said of being forced to use Adrian Houser for only one inning. On the flip side, the Braves got only two innings out of Grant Holmes.

“It was pretty rough on those guys not to just burn a night, but those guys are amped up the entire day to throw. It was pretty difficult conditions to pitch in.”

Both teams will be able to add a 27th man to their roster for the second game.

While Vitello said no decisions had been made, reliever Matt Gage would be a natural choice; he is on the trip and eligible to be activated from the injured list. Robbie Ray, their scheduled starter for Wednesday, would likely start the first game.

Vitello said there was no discussion before the game of starting in a delay, and with the regrettable decision to begin the game, both teams ended up burning their starting pitcher.

The Giants had put seven men on base in two innings against Holmes, who was clearly affected by the conditions, while Houser was tagged for two runs in the bottom of the first.

Holmes twice called for a towel as he issued three walks and four hits amid the downpour that led to two runs. Braves outfielder Michael Harris II left with lower back tightness. Water began to pool around home plate, which Vitello said was the most-impacted area.

“It started to look a little soupy out there,” Vitello said.

Despite the extended stoppage after the top of the second inning, the game was never put into an official rain delay because the tarp was never put on the field.

“You look back on it, I’m sure everyone would have liked to try to do something different at the beginning of the game,” Vitello said. “But the rain, at least from what everybody saw was coming, wasn’t supposed to. … There wasn’t supposed to be additional rain.”

The crowd slowly trickled out, going from an upbeat in-stadium dance party to a few poncho-clad stragglers, over the course of the 110-minute delay as the Braves provided zero communication over the in-stadium screens or loudspeakers.

Finally, after about an hour and a half, Vitello and Walt Weiss emerged from their respective dugouts and huddled with the umpires for about 10 minutes.

“We were out there for a long time just because nobody wanted to make a rash decision,” Vitello said. “I didn’t have much to say, obviously, but those guys have experience with this stuff. They mentioned it was one of the stickier, more difficult in-between situations.”

The teams were planning on resuming play around 10 p.m. local time had the conversation ended differently. However, with an unexpected second round of precipitation, they determined the field couldn’t handle anymore rain and called off the game at 9:50 p.m.

“We were going to see if the work those guys had put in had done enough to get out there and play,” Vitello said. “It probably was. But not with more rain coming.”

The teams will be motivated to get both games in Wednesday as the heaviest rain this week isn’t forecasted to arrive until Thursday. Per the National Weather Service, thunderstorms are expected to begin around 11 a.m. and continue until Friday evening.

The Giants and Braves are scheduled to wrap up their series at 7:15 p.m. local time on Thursday, possibly making for a late arrival into Miami if the game is delayed.

While the Braves visit San Francisco next weekend, the teams only share two off days the rest of the season — Aug. 13 and Sept. 17 — each with its own complications should they need to make up a date in Atlanta.

Bungee instructors who tossed student off 130-foot bridge to her death claim they ‘can’t remember’ who was supposed to tether her

A trio of bumbling bungee instructors who hurled a student off a bridge without a rope attached claimed they “can’t remember” who was tasked with tethering her.

Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas, 21, fell to her death while bungee jumping.

Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas, 21, plummeted to her death off Brazil’s 130-foot Skeleton Bridge — while her fiancé watched in horror — after Luis Felipe Feliciano Egoroff, 32, Maicon Fernandes Cintra, 42, and Vitor de Freitas Gonçalves, 27, forgot to secure the bungee cord.

Three instructors were charged with homicide for Freitas’ botched jump.

The instructors admitted to investigators that they “blacked out” and couldn’t remember who was supposed to attach the safety line.

In newly-released interrogation footage obtained by EPTV, the instructors discuss their alleged involvement leading up to Freitas’ fatal plunge.

Egoroff told authorities that he and Cintra were responsible for attaching the rope, but claimed he “can’t remember” the moments after he took the lead while inching Freitas to the edge.

“After that, it erased from my mind,” he said.

Cintra, meanwhile, brought up the rear of the trio and was holding Freitas by her feet. He said that the trio would typically flip-flop between who tethers the rope.

“It’s us three on the job. I can’t understand at what moment I didn’t see the rope,” Cintra said.

“I simply cannot understand.”

The rope laid limp on the bridge as Freitas disappeared over the ledge. A witness recording Freitas’ dive panned the camera over to the rope in apparent disbelief, shouting “Guys, the rope!”

Freitas was also given a GoPro to capture the jump from her point-of-view. Gonçalves told investigators that they “don’t know” where the camera is.

A nurse who rushed to treat Freitas revealed that the aspiring physical education teacher was somehow still alive when they found her, but died from her horrific injuries soon after.

The three men were charged with homicide and remain in pre-trial detention.

Two of them reportedly tried to flee the bridge before being tracked down by a military helicopter in a nearby wooded area, according to local media. Seen as flight risks, they were all denied bond.

Three additional suspects who also worked at the jump center were taken into custody, but later released.
