Jalen Brunson let out emotions after NBA title that were pent up for a’lifetime’

Jalen Brunson left it all out on the court

The NBA Finals MVP played one of his best games of the playoffs when the Knicks needed him most. But when the clock hit 0.0, and Brunson knew he was an NBA champion, the emotions spilled out.

The guard wrapped a towel over his head and cried into his assistant coach and dad Rick Brunson’s shoulder. Those emotions Brunson released were built up through what felt like a “lifetime,” the guard said Monday on “Good Morning America.”

Jalen Brunson on GMA @GMA/X

“Honestly, it was like a lifetime, honestly, that’s what it felt like. I knew I had to because I knew that face would look crazy on TV,”  Brunson recalled. “I think the best part about it is that these guys have my back night in and night out. Made that moment 10 times more special”

After sharing that moment with his father, mother and wife, Brunson did his post-game interview on ABC with tears still in his eyes and the towel around his neck. Lisa Salters’ second-to-last question hit him the hardest: what it meant to become champions with his father.

Brunson, with emotion etched on his face, could only reply with, “you can see it.”

The 29-year-old led the Knicks to their first championship since 1973.

Brunson joined the Knicks with the goal of making the moment that transpired on Saturday night a reality. After leaving the Dallas Mavericks in 2022, Brunson signed a four-year, $104 million contract that many pundits panned as an overpay before he established himself as a franchise cornerstone.

Then, in 2024, Brunson could have waited an extra year to receive a huge payday, but instead took a cut-price four-year, $156 million deal that saved the franchise upwards of $50 million.

The money was spread across the rest of the lineup, making it one of the strongest in the Eastern Conference. The resilient team had to claw back from deficits in the NBA Finals, including a 29-point comeback in Game 4, the largest in NBA Finals history.

Now, for all of the Knicks players, they will be celebrated on Thursday by all of New York City when the championship parade kicks off from Battery Park.

Syrian sentenced to 26 years in prison by Dutch court for crimes against humanity

THE HAGUE, Netherlands — A Syrian national accused of crimes against humanity was sentenced on Monday to 26 years in prison by a Dutch court for the torture and rape of imprisoned opponents of the government of former president Bashar Assad during the civil war.

The man, identified only as Rafiq al Q. due to Dutch privacy regulations, went on trial in April facing charges including torture, sexual abuse and rape. The 58-year-old denied being involved and accused alleged victims and police of conspiring against him.

The sentence handed down by the District Court of The Hague is the latest against Syrian suspects in different countries since Assad was toppled from power in a decisive rebel offensive in December 2024 that followed years of grinding civil war. Assad fled Syria to longtime ally Russia.

The cases have cast light on the widespread killings and abuse in dozens of detention centers across Syria while Assad was in power. Torture, brutality, sexual violence and mass executions were rampant, according to activists, rights group and former prisoners.

The judges ruled that Rafiq al Q. was a member of the pro-Assad National Defense Force and between 2013 and 2014 worked as an interrogator for the paramilitary group during Syria’s civil war. They said that saying evidence showed he was responsible for torturing people held at detention centers in Salamiyah, including beating them, suspending them upside down and administering electric shocks.

“The defendant was also guilty of sexually abusing multiple victims. He raped one of them,” the court said in a summary of its verdict. “The defendant repeatedly subjected the victims to conditions of extreme fear, threats, pain, hopelessness, and powerlessness. During the court hearings, the victims gave compelling testimonies about the impact this had on them and the consequences they continue to suffer to this day.”

Wearing a striped shirt and sitting next to his lawyer with guards standing nearby, Rafiq al Q. appeared to make no comment as he was convicted and sentenced. He was acquitted on a number of charges where judges ruled there was insufficient evidence.

Rafiq al Q. claimed asylum in the Netherlands in 2021 and was living in the eastern town of Druten when he was arrested in 2023.

His trial was based on universal jurisdiction, a legal principle that allows suspects to be prosecuted for international offenses such as war crimes even if they are committed in another country.

Prosecutors and the defendant have 14 days to appeal the conviction and sentence.

The Dutch are not alone in prosecuting Syrians linked to the former Assad government.

Last year, a German court sentenced a Syrian doctor to life imprisonment for torture and war crimes in his Syrian homeland on Monday for killing two people and torturing nine in Syria between 2011 and 2012. And in 2024, a Paris court sentenced three high-ranking Syrian officials in absentia to life in prison for complicity in war crimes.

Syria also is seeking justice for crimes by officials loyal to Assad.

In April, the first public trial opened in Damascus of former government officials. Atef Najib, a former Syrian army brigadier general who was head of the Political Security Branch in southern Syria’s Daraa province under Assad and who is also a cousin of the former president, appeared in the courtroom to face charges related to “crimes against the Syrian people,” state-run news agency SANA reported.

‘Hell on Wheels’ killer Mackenzie Shirilla’s mom whines about daughter struggling ‘mentally’ in prison

The mother of “Hell on Wheels” killer Mackenzie Shirilla is whining about how her daughter is “struggling” and putting on weight in prison — while insisting she still loves the boyfriend she murdered.

Natalie Shirilla complained to the Daily Mail that her now-21-year-old daughter is “mentally struggling” while holed up in the Ohio Reformatory for Women in Marysville, where she is serving two concurrent sentences of 15 years to life for killing boyfriend Dominic Russo and a friend in 2022.

“She’s struggling … It’s very hard and challenging in there,” the 51-year-old mom complained.

“She’s actually gained a little bit of weight … She looks physically better but she’s still mentally struggling.”

Natalie said her daughter — who was nicknamed “Hell on Wheels” by the judge in her trial — “still loves” Russo, whom she was convicted of murdering by deliberately crashing her car into a wall at more than 100 mph.

“’I loved Dom. I still love Dom. Mackenzie still loves Dom. She’s struggling. Dom was like part of our family,” the still-supportive mom said.

She emphatically debunked reports that Russo had tried to break up with Shirilla before he was killed in the fatal smash in a suburb of Cleveland that also claimed the life of a 19-year-old pal. Davion Flanagan.

Shirilla, who was 17 at the time of the crash, and the two victims were driving around and getting high when she suddenly gunned the engine and smashed the car into a warehouse at 100 mph.

But Natalie admitted Shirilla and Russo’s relationship could sometimes be volatile.

But she said her daughter has only kept quiet about it all on the protective mom’s advice.

“‘Everything that she has said about [Russo], even in the nicest, most innocent way, has been used against her in a way that makes her look evil or a monster,” she said.

“So, if I was her, I would never talk again ever, because whatever you say is going to be used against you.”

Natalie Shirilla also defended her daughter over her behavior in prison, where she has been found guilty of 32 of her 36 prison conduct violations.

“A lot of the tickets she got were for stuff she wouldn’t even know were rules, like wearing her uniform,” she claimed.

In 2024, Shirilla was charged with possession of contraband after cops found 29 banned items following a cell search and she pleaded guilty after officers uncovered nude magazine snaps, WOIO reported.

In January last year, cops uncovered medication not prescribed to the killer and when probed, she claimed the pills were prenatal vitamins she had received from another person.

Shirilla pleaded guilty to having more than 100 video visits with a released ex-inmate, and exposing her breast during another video call.

Her other infractions have included playing with her tablet, “dancing” and hanging out in unauthorized areas and after lights out, blabbing through guards’ headcounts.

Shirilla previously boasted how her nickname was “Shirilla the killa” but Natalie tried to claim her daughter wasn’t “aggressive.”

The killer has since landed a gig as a food service worker after moaning to her mom she was bored because there was “nothing for me to do” in a leaked call obtained by TMZ.

Shirilla was convicted of crashing her car into a brick wall. City of Strongsville

Shirilla was sentenced to life in prison in August 2023, but the Netflix documentary “The Crash” re-sparked the frenzy surrounding the case.

She will be eligible for parole in October 2037.

Shirilla’s lawyers continue to fight the Ohio Supreme Court after it rejected her appeal because it was filed after the deadline.

Video shows helicopter crash that killed Oliver Tree plunging to ground

A horrifying video shows the moment one of the two helicopters involved in the crash that killed singer Oliver Tree plunges to the ground.

In surveillance footage released by Rio de Janeiro’s Military Fire Department, the aircraft can be seen spinning out of control and falling into a car dealership’s parking lot in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, before causing a massive fire that engulfed more than 20 cars.

Witness Fernandes de Freitas claimed one person could be seen jumping from one of the helicopters before they both crashed, according to NBC News.

“It was terrifying, absolutely horrifying,” the tire-repair workman said.

The cause of the crash has not been confirmed and officials are investigating the collision.

Six people were killed when two helicopters collided in the air early Sunday morning while flying over an electric vehicle yard in Recreio dos Bandeirantes, in the Southwest zone of Rio de Janeiro.

At least 20 cars were set on fire from the collision after being hit at the crash site, CNN reported.

One of the helicopters — a Bell 206B JetRanger III —  was carrying 32-year-old Tree, Argentinian influencer Gaspar Prim, passengers Lucas Vignale and Lucas Brito Chaves and pilot Alexandre Souza.

Sixty-year-old pilot Charles Marsillac was the only person on the other helicopter, an Airbus H125.

In addition to the police, the local Fire Department, CET (Traffic Engineering Company), Comlurb and teams from 31st BPM (Recreio dos Bandeirantes) worked to isolate the area after the crash.

Tree was in South America for his “The World’s First World Tour.” He had just done a show in São Paulo on June 6 and was scheduled to perform in Lisbon on July 13.

The late singer — who was born in Santa Cruz, California — rose to fame in 2010 at 17 years old and has worked with big names like Skrillex and Zeds Dead under the moniker “Tree.”

He put out his latest album, “Love You Madly Hate You Badly,” in April.

Tree’s ex, Melanie Martinez, shared a tribute to him after he was killed in the helicopter crash, admitting that she’s “been an absolute wreck.”

“It’s really hard to understand how someone who you once shared such a specific and formative time of your life with can all of a sudden be gone,” she wrote on Instagram.

Martinez also said Tree had a “contagious and warm” laugh and was always “dedicated” to his art, which she “admired and respected so deeply.”

Distraught mom rages after daughter fatally thrown off Brazilian bridge without bungee cord: ‘That damned rope’

The mother of a Brazilian student who died after plummeting from a bridge during an unlicensed bungee jump raged about the fatal mistake — as the local mayor said the company has been a problem for years.

“‘That damned rope took you away from me forever,” Valdenia Rodrigues, mother of 21-year-old Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas, said in an Instagram post on Sunday, reported Brazilian outlet Estadao.

“My beloved daughter, only today I wanted to hug you more than a thousand times. How it’s hurting me your departure,.”

De Freitas died after plunging 130 feet off a bridge near Sao Paulo on Saturday when the instructors seemingly failed to attach her safety rope.

Three of the six staff members at the bungee jumping company who were initially arrested have now been charged with de Freitas’s homicide.

“I love you forever, my princess. And thank you so much for being a part of my life during those 21 years. What an honor it was to hear you call me a mother. God, thank you for that privilege,” Rodrigues continued in the emotional post.

“Skeleton Bridge,” the scene of the fateful jump, is so named because it was never finished, after being constructed for a since-defunct railway.

It has become a site for unlicensed extreme sports activities, and was previously the scene of another fatality in April 2024, when a 39-year-old cyclist fell to her death.

“In addition to the circumstances that led to the young woman’s death, it is necessary to establish who is responsible for the lack of access control to a federal area which, for years, has posed known risks and is still without the necessary safety measures,” the mayor of the nearby town of Limeira, Murilo Felix, said on Sunday in a statement.

“We have been calling for action for months to ensure that the Federal Government assumes its responsibility. Unfortunately, its failure to act has just resulted in yet another tragedy in Limeira,” he continued.

CORTIS new music

On May 4, CORTIS released their second EP “GreenGreen.”

The high-energy, six-track offering may only last a scant 16 minutes but that’s no matter. James, Juhoon, Martin, Seonghyeon and Keonho make the most out of their short runtime.

“TNT” kicks off the quickie mini-album and marries drowned-out guitars with trap and big, hook-y singalongs to create an epic anthem that has a little something for everybody.

Other standouts here include the glitchy bop “REDRED,” 8-bit inspired, bleeps and bloops crowd-pleaser “ACAI,” genuinely nuts banger “YOUNGCREATORCREW,” chilled-out, Hip-Hop/emo crossover “Wassup” and surprisingly gorgeous ballad “Blue Lips.”

Told you they cover a lot of ground in just 16 minutes.

To hear for yourself, you can hear “GreenGreen” here.

One US Airline made global ranking of 2026 best airlines

Only one domestic airline is flying high in this worldwide ranking.

The 2026 Airline Passenger Experience Association (APEX) awards have been announced, recognizing top-performing carriers for exceptional customer care, and only one based in the US, Delta, made the list of Best Global airlines, specifically for top Wi-Fi.

The service is offered free across 1,200 aircraft, more than any other domestic airline.

Delta also received the APEX Five Star Global Airline award for 2026, a distinction given to only 40 airlines worldwide.

The carrier was previously named Best Global Airline for the Americas in 2025 by APEX.
