California woman, 30, vanishes on Costa Rica hike during flash flooding and mudslides

A California woman has gone missing while hiking in Costa Rica as flash flooding and mudslides battered the region.

Ashley Phillips, 30, vanished on June 2 after dangerous weather swept the Central American country.

She has been missing for nearly two weeks as search efforts, which were initially underway, have since been paused because of torrid conditions.

A GoFundMe set up on June 9 said: “For the past seven days, the Jonkey and Phillips family have been living through every parent’s and sibling’s worst nightmare.

“Their beloved daughter and sister, Ashley Phillips, has been missing in Costa Rica after severe weather caused flooding and mudslides during a hike.”

The fundraiser has a goal of $20,000 and had raised nearly $15,000 as of Monday.

In another update posted on June 12, the family marked 10 days since her disappearance, noting search efforts had become difficult because of the weather.

It continued: “Today marks 10 days since Ashley went on a hike and did not return. Due to ongoing severe weather conditions in Costa Rica, the search efforts have been temporarily paused.”

It added: “However, the search is expected to resume once conditions improve and the drier season begins.”

Costa Rica is currently under a nationwide green alert as authorities warn that heavy rains and already saturated soils are increasing the risk of flooding and landslides across multiple regions.

The country’s National Emergency Commission said unstable weather is expected to continue as the rainy season intensifies and a nearby low-pressure system develops in the Pacific.

Although Tropical Storm Cristina is moving away and is not expected to make a direct hit, officials say it is still influencing conditions by pulling moisture across the country, bringing persistent rain, rough seas and strong winds.

Authorities said the continued activity of the Intertropical Convergence Zone is keeping weather patterns unstable, particularly along the Pacific coast and in mountainous areas.

It remains unclear whether local authorities are actively investigating Phillips’ disappearance or whether the U.S. government is assisting with search and rescue efforts.

The California Post has reached out to Costa Rican authorities and the U.S. State Department for comment.

Three instructors charged with homicide of student thrown 130 feet down without bungee cord

Three bungee-jumping instructors have been charged with the death of a young student who was thrown off a 130-foot bridge without a rope attached — as mystery swirls over a handheld camera she was carrying during her horrific final moments.

In total, six people have been taken into custody and questioned about the death of Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas, 21, in Limeira, near Sao Paulo, on Saturday, O Globo reported.

Of them, three instructors — Luis Felipe Feliciano Egoroff, 32, Vitor de Freitas Goncalves, 27, and Maicon Fernandes Cintra, 42 — were charged with homicide, the outlet said.

They are understood to be the three seen in a now-viral video as they lifted up the young student to launch her off the 130-foot “Skeleton Bridge” — with her plummetting to her death as the safety rope was then seen lying unused on the platform.

Two of the instructors fled the scene once they realized what had happened to de Freitas as her horrified fiancé watched on.

They were then tracked down by a military helicopter to a nearby wooded area, the repot said.

Two of the primary suspects said they had a “blackout” and didn’t remember attaching the ropes, the deputy responsible, Andréa Dantas Levy, told O Globo.

“They said they can’t remember where and when the fault occurred, who would have to have put it, and didn’t. The third, who held his legs, said he was only called in to help with the throw,” Levy said.

Three others, who were in a tent next to the jump-site handing bracelets to customers, were later released.

The three were filmed throwing the student off the bridge after seemingly failing to attach the rope.

Before she was hurled to her death, de Freitas was seen carrying a 360-degree camera, which the unlicensed bungee jumping company provided for an extra $30 on top of the $36 for the jump.

That camera was not located at the base of the bridge, according to Brazilian media.

All three primary suspects were placed in pre-trial detention at a court hearing Sunday, on the grounds that they had tried to escape, and that “their freedom could lead to the repetition of equally dangerous conduct,” according to Judge Paulo Henrique Stahlberg Natal.

No information was given on their next court date.

If found guilty, they face between 6 and 30 years in prison.

De Freitas, whose funeral was held Sunday, had shared an Instagram post moments before jumping, asking, “Who was the crazy one who let me come jump off a bridge?”

Skeleton Bridge, erected 30 years ago for a now-defunct railway line, gets its name because it was never completed and has become a site for extreme sports enthusiasts.

Dad survives five week coma after “fireball” explosion while making gin

A man was left fighting for his life in a coma after a gin distillery explosion saw him “engulfed in a fireball”.

Leigh Taylor, 45, was distilling a new spirit in the brewery where he worked when the container overpressurised and exploded, blowing the roof off the building.

The dad-of-two was engulfed in flames – with his face, hands, and legs scorched by the blaze – and was rushed to hospital, where he spent five weeks in a coma.

He “died for eight minutes” after having a cardiac arrest while in a coma three weeks after the accident, but luckily was revived by doctors.

Leigh, based in the Lake District in Cumbria, had skin grafted from his back onto his hands and legs.

It took months for his airways to heal because he inhaled fire during the incident, leaving his system weakened from scarring and susceptible to chest infections and pneumonia.

Despite a painful recovery process, Leigh is now healed and well, describing his survival as “a miracle,” – echoed by the doctors and surgeons who treated him.

Two years on, Leigh is fundraising in support of Great North Air Ambulance and the Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, after feeling his survival must have been for “a purpose”.

Leigh, who is not currently working due to his long-term illness, said: “I was engulfed in a fireball.

“I remember being pulled out of the rubble, conscious, and I saw the skin on my hands was melted and hanging off.

“I heard sirens, and I could feel myself slipping away – like in this liminal space between life and death – then I woke up from my coma five weeks later.

“In recovery, the pain was unlike anything I’ve ever had in my life before.

“I really struggled afterwards with the purpose of my survival. There was no logical reason for me to have survived.

“People say I’m lucky to be alive – yes, there’s an element of luck to me surviving, but would you really call what happened lucky?

Taylor says that in recovery, the pain was unlike anything he’d ever experienced in his life before.

“What it is, is a miracle.”

Leigh, who worked at a brewery in Workington, Cumbria, was testing some new distilling equipment.

Despite being an experienced distiller, for reasons unclear, on May 13 2024, the container over-pressurised and exploded, while Leigh was standing right beside it.

He was blown across the room in a fireball and was air-lifted to Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle, where he was put into a coma for his survival.

He said: “I was in pain, but the shock took over more.

“The vision of my burnt hands had me screaming in shock, and I could smell it too.

“The skin was hanging off, like in horror films.

“As far as I was aware, it was game over for me.”

Three weeks into his five-week coma, Leigh had a cardiac arrest and his heart stopped for eight minutes, and he was given two doses of adrenaline to start it again.

He had some skin grafts done on his hands while he was in the coma, but his legs were grafted after he woke up, using skin from his back and torso.

He said: “The pain on the donor sites was like nothing else. I’ll never forget it.”

He was discharged to recover at home, heavily bandaged, in July 2024, with regular nurse and hospital appointments as his burns healed.

Thanks to the mask applied to his face by the air ambulance team, the skin on his face didn’t need to be grafted and he healed well.

He said: “There was no damage to my vision, but at one stage it was thought I might have lost my sight.”

Leigh had to go through a long process of learning to walk and move normally again, and needed a small surgery to correct some contracture on one hand.

But once physically recovered, he struggled with his mental health as he battled a string of issues related to his airways and breathing due to internal scarring from the fire, and he still deals with ongoing complications.

Leigh struggled with the idea of his “purpose” after surviving – and was determined to make the most of his second chance.

He started to get up and out, exercising as soon as he was able to.

He said: “The nurses said I’m not your average burns survivor, pushing the boundaries of my physical recovery.”

Once healed, he sold his car, handed his keys back to his landlady, and decided to take on the challenge of riding the entire UK coastline on an e-trike with his dog, Taco, in a challenge he has dubbed ‘Paws and Pedal’.

Since setting off in July 2025 from the hospital in Newcastle, where he was treated, he has completed around 2,000 miles around Scotland and Northern Ireland.

He anticipates the remaining several thousand miles to take him until the end of October, if all goes to plan.

He stays in a different location every night, being taken in by kind supporters via his social media pages, and has so far raised over $14,000.

Reflecting on his experience, Leigh said: “I’m lucky to be alive, to have my sight and my face.”

World Cup 2026: Tactical trends as Brazil join others in adopting a 4-4-2

Football tactics are continually being developed and analysed in an increasingly detailed manner so it is interesting, and fun, to see the 4-4-2 become so commonly used at this World Cup.

Premier League football of the early 2000s was typified by the 4-4-2 formation. Spaces between players were bigger with fewer low blocks and less drilled high presses seen.

This led to more time and space for attackers to express themselves.

Teams, perhaps due to conditions and lack of coaching time, have reverted to using a 4-4-2 that looks similar, in part explaining why games feel more open.

Many teams are opting for such a shape out of possession including Ecuador, Ivory Coast, Morocco, Brazil, Haiti, Scotland and Japan, at times.

In their 4-4-2, teams are picking moments in which to step up and press but for large parts of the game are choosing instead to defend in a mid-block – rather than defending deep or pressing high consistently.

If international sides opt to simply sit in and defend deep, they are ultimately conceding a level of control on the game.

Especially against bigger nations, allowing them long spells of attacking possession around your box essentially gives them the sort of game they would want to play.

Pressing intensely all game becomes less effective given the gruelling heat and humidity but in moments has provided fruitful for teams such as Mexico, Morocco and Germany, who have all scored soon after forcing an opposition turnover.

This then leaves teams defending in the middle of the pitch in a 4-4-2 shape.

The formation provides cover in a wide and balanced manner but it does leave spaces between the lines that teams have managed to exploit well via our next trend.

Barron Trump debuts new look at UFC event as he makes first public appearance in months

Barron Trump put his new hairstyle on display at Sunday’s White House UFC fight.

President Donald Trump’s youngest child sported longer and more tousled hair this weekend than he did in his last public appearance, months ago.

Instead of being pushed back, the 20-year-old’s locks flopped onto his forehead.

Barron suited up sans tie for the UFC Freedom 250 event, which took place on Donald’s 80th birthday.

The New York University student’s half-siblings — Ivanka Trump, Tiffany Trump, Eric Trump and Donald Trump Jr. — were all also present.

The family members watched seven fights on the White House lawn, with Justin Gaethje and Ilia Topuri’s bout being the main matchup.

Barron last stepped out publicly for Donald’s State of the Union address in February.

He did not join his brothers and sisters at April’s Easter Egg Roll, nor did he attend Donald Jr. and Bettina Anderson’s wedding in the Bahamas last month.

Barron has been a student of NYU’s Stern School of Business since 2024.

Last year, he transferred from the college’s Big Apple campus to “another NYU campus … [for] a semester,” multiple security officers confirmed to Page Six.

People confirmed he was trying out the school’s Washington, D.C., campus, blocks from 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

In March, the outlet dubbed Barron “sort of a loner” compared to his siblings.

“He is more like his mother, [Melania Trump], with a European aloof and quiet sophistication,” the insider said.

While lacking Donald’s “brashness,” Barron is a “carbon copy” of his dad who has “inherited his father’s interest in making money and a name for himself,” according to the outlet.

He recently backed a beverage brand, Sollos Yerba Mate Inc., which launched last month.

The company, started by “a group of close friends ages 19-23,” debuted with a $39 Pineapple + Coconut 12-pack.

Organic formula recalled after 3 babies hospitalized with botulism

An organic baby formula sold at Target has been voluntarily recalled by the manufacturer after three infants who consumed the product were infected with a deadly bacterium.

According to the FDA, the makers of Nara Organics Powdered Infant Formula are recalling all lots of the product out of an “abundance of caution” after three infants were hospitalized in California, Washington and Pennsylvania with infant botulism.

The formula is distributed nationally through Target stores and the Nara.com website.

Per the FDA, all three infants were given BabyBIG, an antitoxin used to treat infant botulism, and have survived the infection.

A rare but potentially grave illness, infant botulism occurs when clostridium botulinum spores are ingested and germinate in infants’ immature guts, producing botulinum neurotoxins.

Parents of children less than a year old should be mindful of infant botulism symptoms, such as constipation, poor feeding habits, weakness (particularly in the infant’s facial area), weak crying, lack of head control and difficulty breathing.

The symptoms may appear up to a month after exposure, and early treatment is critical. If infants begin to exhibit these symptoms, immediate medical care is called for.

Botulism can be fatal — causing death in 5% to 10% of cases — and presents “a serious threat to the health of infants,” according to the FDA.

In these most recent cases, the infants, who were between 2 and 5 months old when they became ill, were given the formula between April and May of this year.

The three product lots consumed by the hospitalized infants are 709125280E14F2, 709125288E14F2, and 708125174E14F2.

While thus far, zero lots of Nara Organics Powdered Infant Formula have tested positive for Clostridium botulinum, the company is voluntarily recalling all whole-milk infant powdered products. FDA

Lot numbers can be found on the bottom of the formula containers.

Thus far, zero lots of Nara Organics Powdered Infant Formula have tested positive for Clostridium botulinum, but the company is voluntarily recalling all whole-milk infant powdered products.

Nara Organics is working closely with the FDA, CDC, and state partners to find the root cause of these cases.

While the bacteria that cause botulism are quite common, they rarely cause illness when eaten, as the spores they produce require specific conditions to produce the lethal toxin.

Among these conditions are an environment with low or no oxygen, low acidity, low sugar, low salt, specific water levels and/or a temperature range.

Botulism causes death in 5% to 10% of cases, said the CDC. Getty Images

According to the FDA, consumers should cease using the products immediately and can request a full refund through the Nara website. Target customers can request a refund online or in person at a store location.

The FDA recommends that any remaining product be kept in a safe place away from other food and clearly marked “Do Not Use,” as state health officials may request samples for testing.

The agency maintains that Nara Organics Whole Milk Organic Infant Formula accounts for less than 1% of all infant formula sold in the US, and that this outbreak does not create shortage concerns.

This is not the first time in recent history that a formula has posed a potentially fatal risk.

Last winter, an outbreak of botulism linked to ByHeart Inc.’s Whole Nutrition Infant Formula led to the hospitalization of dozens of babies. In a June update, the FDA said that the outbreak resulted in about 48 illnesses, including 28 confirmed cases.

Meanwhile, this spring, the FDA issued its most serious recall for peeled garlic sold in New York, Vermont, and Pennsylvania over a potential botulism risk.

In March, a young Arizona woman nearly lost her life after eating a fermented swordfish dish contaminated with botulism.

On The Border abruptly shuttered 60 locations across US

Say adiós to an old favorite.

After a year of bad business, a popular Tex-Mex chain is calling it quits.

On The Border Mexican Grill & Cantina, known for slinging a variety of fajitas and a massive selection of margaritas, announced that it has closed all of its company-owned restaurants.

The fan favorite announced the bad news on its website, “After many years of serving our communities, On The Border Mexican Grill & Cantina has closed its company-owned restaurant locations. This was an incredibly tough decision. We are deeply grateful to the guests and team members who supported On The Border for so many years. Thank you to everyone who has been part of this journey.”

Diners have now officially lost all 60 locations mere weeks after a “sweeping menu overhaul,” designed to grow the chain, a previous press release read.

On The Border previously filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy back in 2025 but was quickly purchased by Pappas Restaurants two short months later.

Pappas’s portfolio is quite large, owning Pappadeaux Seafood Kitchen, Pappasito’s Cantina, Pappas Bros. Steakhouse, Pappas Bar-B-Q, Pappas Burger and Yiayia’s Greek Kitchen with over 100 spots across the US.

On The Border released a statement on its website On The Border / Instagram

Originally founded back in 1982 and known as On the Border South Texas Café, the company’s new goal was to share “bold, border-style food with its customers,” said OTB Holdings Chief Restructuring Officer Jonathan Tibus in the 2025 bankruptcy court filing.

However, that dream started to die — despite big plans from its new owner. And the closures didn’t shock many restaurant-goers as monster chains like Papa John’s, Red Lobster, Hardee’s, and more have closed more than dozens of locations due to low foot traffic and high costs.

Once the news broke, folks flocked to social media to share their thoughts. With some haters spewing theirs along the way, of course.

“I thought they were already closed… Who still eats there? It has nothing to do with the economy. This has been a dying brand for decades….just like Red Lobster,” someone posted on Instagram.

Another wrote, “Years ago it was great food. But they really went down bad the last few years.”

It wasn’t all bitter Betty’s, some begged On The Border, “Someone please release the On the Border salsa recipe!”

However, diehard fans may still be able to visit a location as the chain’s website lists five spots across four states. On The Border has independently operated franchise locations in South Dakota, Florida, Nevada, California, and South Korea and those will remain open.
