World Cup 2026: Who has played the most minutes heading into the tournament?
France must battle with both heat and fatigue if they are to win the World Cup for a third time.
Didier Deschamps’ squad have been in action more than any of the leading nations, with 1,341 matches totalling 98,895 minutes.
Crystal Palace central defender Maxence Lacroix has the most starts (58) and minutes (5,009) of the France players, but the 26-year-old is only expected to be a squad pick for Les Bleus.
Bayern Munich forward Michael Olise (65), coincidentally a former Palace player, has made the most appearances but by coming off the bench 12 times he is second on minutes played (4,942).
Olise is one of 11 France players who featured at the Club World Cup. Portugal also had 11 with only Germany, on 12, having more in action in the United States last summer.
In the squad top 10 we find Portugal in second, with 1,299 matches and 96,405 minutes.
Roberto Martinez’s squad would have been closer to the top had Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot seen more cup action with Manchester United. The Red Devils failed to quality for Europe and played only one match in both the FA Cup and the EFL Cup.
Paris St-Germain midfielder Vitinha played the most games (66) in reaching the final of the Club World Cup and winning the Champions League.
Cristiano Ronaldo started all 44 matches he played for Al Nassr and Portugal.
England are third, with Thomas Tuchel’s men having played more games (1,304) than Portugal but made fewer starts (1,051 to 1,092).
The workload on Harry Kane could be a concern with the captain – who is 33 next month – playing 63 games for Bayern Munich.
Morgan Rogers is the most played, featuring 64 times across 5,037 minutes for Aston Villa and England.
England have the most players (seven) to make 50 or more starts, followed by Belgium, Germany and Portugal (six).
For Germany, Bayern centre-back Jonathan Tah has played the most minutes (4,923) of Julian Nagelsmann’s squad.

Elliot Anderson: Manchester City have second bid rejected for Nottingham Forest midfielder
Manchester City‘s second offer worth £120m for Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson has been rejected.
City have intensified their pursuit of the 23-year-old England international, with an offer of an initial £106m plus add-ons.
Should they sign Anderson, it would eclipse the £105m Arsenal paid West Ham for Declan Rice in 2023 as the record transfer for an English player.
City had an opening bid rejected by Forest earlier this month and Anderson’s preference is a move to Etihad Stadium over Manchester United, while personal terms are not an issue.
United are effectively out of the running, having not wanted to get into a bidding war and only wanting players eager to join them.
City have long been admirers of Newcastle academy graduate Anderson. The player is currently preparing for the World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico, but club-to-club talks can continue to take place.
He started England’s 3-0 win over Costa Rica on Wednesday – the final friendly for the Three Lions before their opening World Cup game against Croatia on 17 June.
Anderson was one of Forest’s star performers last season as they reached the Europa League semi-finals and avoided relegation from the Premier League, despite having four managers.
He arrived from Newcastle in 2024 for £35m and has made 92 appearances, scoring six goals.
Bernardo Silva’s exit from City at the end of his contract means they are looking to bolster their midfield and Anderson tops the list of potential targets.
Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali is another player understood to be highly rated by City, with reports suggesting the Italy international has also been monitored as a long-term target.
Somali referee Omar Artan to officiate Super Cup after being denied World Cup spot
Somali referee Omar Artan, who was denied entry to the United States to officiate at the World Cup, has been appointed to take charge of the Uefa Super Cup match between Paris St-Germain and Aston Villa.
The contest between Champions League winners PSG and Aston Villa, who triumphed in the Europa League, is scheduled to take place on 12 August in Salzburg.
European football’s governing body said the decision had been taken after discussions with the Confederation of African Football (Caf).
Uefa president Aleksander Ceferin said: “Omar Artan is an excellent young but already experienced referee, who has proven himself at the highest competition level of the Confederation of African Football.
“Football is made to connect people, and Uefa wants to show its respect to Omar and his outstanding officiating skills, which had earned him such a prestigious nomination.
“I am grateful to my friend Caf president Patrice Motsepe for supporting enthusiastically our initiative.”
Artan, the 2025 Caf men’s referee of the year, who has been on Fifa’s international list since 2018, was set to be the first Somali to referee at the World Cup finals.
However, he was turned away by border officials in Miami despite holding a diplomatic passport and a single-entry US visa.
On Wednesday, a US government official said Artan had not been allowed to enter the country because of an alleged “association with suspected members of terror organisations”.
Somalia is one of several countries on a travel ban list introduced by US President Donald Trump. After speaking to the US authorities, world governing body Fifa said Artan would miss the tournament.
Artan told the New York Times this week that he was questioned by border officials over his links to Somali militant group Al Shabab and had told them he knew nothing about the group.
“I had the right papers and everything. I had the right visa,” said Artan.
“I’m just simply a referee who’s trying to live his dream, the biggest dream of my life, to come to the World Cup.”
