Obama and Michelle take digs at Trump in 3-hour presidential center opening ceremony with A-listers and ex-presidents

Former President Barack Obama and ex-first lady Michelle Obama took digs at President Trump during a three-hour ceremony celebrating their legacy at a new center in Chicago — alongside foreign dignitaries, Hollywood stars and other A-listers.

Obama said in his remarks at a dedication ceremony for his new presidential center in Chicago that on the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution, it was important to remember how “radical the whole idea of self-government really was back in 1776.”

“To that point, human history was a tale of conquest and caste and rigid hierarchies. A world where the strong dominated the weak, where power and wealth and status flowed through lineage, and the many were ruled by the few,” the 44th president said.

“But out of the fire and steel of a revolution, a different story took flight on this continent a declaration that we are all created equal, endowed by our creator with certain unalienable rights, and that in the newly independent United States there will be no kings or lower, no serfs or subjects, but only citizens.”

“No Kings” demonstrations have swept through major cities like New York and Washington, DC, since Trump was inaugurated for a second time in January 2025, opposing the president’s immigration agenda and other policies.

Though Obama left office in January 2017, the Presidential Center’s 19-acre campus on the South Side of Chicago — with a near-windowless, 225-foot towering museum at its center — took years to build as costs ballooned from $500 million to more than $830 million.

Obama also thanked his wife and daughters, joking that Michelle “did me wrong” by not letting him review her own remarks beforehand, which had caused him to become visibly emotional.

“She knew she was going to mess me up, and she did it anyway. But she’s always made me better. And I could not be more grateful,” he admitted.

Michelle Obama praised her husband’s achievements in and out of office, needling Trump — without naming him — for having propagated “lies” about her husband’s “birthright.”

“When fact and fiction run together, when folks seek to stifle speech, limit access to education, devalue diversity, erase the inconvenient parts of our history, when our phone constantly buzz with the latest outrage,” she continued in veiled attacks at the Trump administration and Republicans, “I hope that this place can offer a respite from all that — at least for a little while.”

Michelle Obama praised her husband for “ending a war, ordering the bin Laden raid, saving an auto industry, winning a peace prize,” the final of which feat earned loud applause from his ex-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton seated behind him.

Trump has fumed for years about Obama winning the coveted prize, while he has not yet.

Former Presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Joe Biden joined the ex-first family onstage for the ceremony with their wives: first ladies Hillary Clinton, Laura Bush and Jill Biden. Former Vice President Kamala Harris and ex-German Chancellor Angela Merkel also attended.

The 46th president appeared somewhat disoriented as he left the stage following a concluding performance from Stevie Wonder, Bruce Springsteen and other musicians, with Biden pointing in different directions as his head swiveled looking to find an exit.

“Thank you for your steadfast partnership for eight years,” Obama said at one point of Joe and Jill Biden in his speech. “Joe, we started as running mates and ended as family, and we would not be here without you. And we are grateful.”

Obama had expressed doubts about his former VP Joe Biden having the juice to win the 2020 election against Donald Trump.

He also told the 46th president that a flailing debate performance had “greatly diminished” his chances of beating Trump in 2024.

Three days later, Biden dropped out and was succeeded as the Democratic nominee by his vice president, Kamala Harris.

Comedian Dave Chapelle, actor Tom Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson, as well as other celebrities, attended the grand opening with other musical performances by John Legend, Common and Christina Aguilera.

The ceremony came in the backdrop of high-stakes foreign policy decisions in Washington between US and Iran to end the conflict.

The war began with joint American-Israeli airstrikes on Feb. 28 to decimate Tehran’s military capabilities but resulted in the closure of the Strait of Hormuz — and surging energy prices.

“We’ve learned that we can’t solve every conflict, or solve or stop every atrocity around the globe,” said Obama, whose administration had secured a nuclear agreement with Iran that had been undone by Trump in the 45th president’s term.

Josh Hart’s wife touches his behind in viral Knicks parade moment

Knicks guard Josh Hart got an unexpected surprise from his wife, Shannon, during the team’s championship parade in New York on Thursday.

Shannon sneakily put right her hand on Hart’s behind which made him jump and quickly turn around while they were atop the Knicks’ bus, as seen in a viral video online.

Hart had his back turned to Shannon while he was waving to fans with one hand and holding a cigar in the other.

She was laughing and holding a beer while standing with Samara Hillman, wife of Matt Hillman, who is a co-host of the “Roommates” podcast with Hart and Brunson.

Many online joked that Shannon was getting “revenge” for Knicks point guard Jalen Brunson after Hart did a similar gesture to him while celebrating the team’s NBA Cup Championship in December.

At the time, Brunson, who immediately felt a poke around his rear end, turned around and stared at Hart, his former Villanova teammate.

The Knicks beat the Spurs 124-113 to win the league’s mid-season tournament in Las Vegas — and six months later, New York won four of five against San Antonio in the 2026 NBA Finals.

The ticker-tape parade came after Hart and Brunson tossed the ceremonial first pitches at the Yankee Stadium on Wednesday night.

The Knicks have been busy making the rounds in the media after bringing at title back to Madison Square Garden for the first time in 53 years.

Knicks heralded as kings of NYC in estimated largest ticker tape parade in city’s history

They’re the kings of New York City!

The Knicks were heralded as royalty Thursday in what is estimated to be the largest ticker tape parade — and biggest party — in Big Apple history, with ravenous fans arriving hours ahead of the event to catch a glimpse of the champions.

An estimated 2 million fans flooded lower Manhattan for the blockbuster event, forming a sea of orange and blue that extended blocks beyond the Canyon of Heroes and swelled with unadulterated joy.

“This is Knick City! This is basketball town,” said Al James, of Staten Island, who took the day off from the MTA to participate.

“I never felt the energy like this. I’ve never seen anything like this before.”

The exuberant vibes and a ceremony to give the team the ceremonial keys were the icing on the cake after a historic playoff run that saw the Knicks go 16-3 and rattle off 13 wins in a row.

The team finished off their epic Finals run by polishing off the San Antonio Spurs and NBA golden boy Victor Wembanyama in 5 games, in heated battles that saw Wemby become the most hated man in New York because of his roughhouse play — and the Knicks come out on top in a Game 4 showdown that saw them erase a 29-point deficit.

The championship turned even cynical New Yorkers giddy and transformed the five boroughs into party central during and after games, with the parade and ceremony Thursday serving as a primal catharsis for a title-starved fanbase that went 53 years without an NBA title.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani teased that the ticker tape parade could be the biggest in Big Apple history days before, saying 1 million could attend — although turnout was at least double that.

Sean Dolan, 28, of Jersey City, planted himself in the area at 2 a.m., telling The Post the party was “like Christmas.”

Here’s the latest coverage on the Knicks’ historic ticker-tape championship parade

“It’s one of the biggest moments of my life, honestly. Just being able to see the team you’ve been rooting for your whole life win, being able to come and celebrate it with those millions and millions Knicks fans that are going to be here today, it’s an insane feeling,” Dolan said.

Gabriel Walcott, 18, woke up at 3 a.m. to race to the event from Ronkomkoma with a Brunson, egg and cheese in hand, saying he was “willing to do anything” to be a part of the action.

Many also flocked from other states for the occasion, including Azaa and Bobby Thorpe, who had the 10-hour drive from North Carolina.

“This means the world to me,” said Azaa, 70, with Bobby, 67, adding, “The team won the game but they won it for everybody out here today. I was saying thank God. They finally did it.”

The crowds were so intense that many people were turned away from the access points by 7:30 a.m. — less than an hour after fans were allowed to start filing inside the parade area.

The subways were also so overwhelmed with fans that it took some passengers around 30 minutes to crawl from the platforms onto the street.

The NYPD and organizers had double-barricaded the parade area in anticipation of the chaos, but the metal gates were no match for the ravenous Knicks fans.

Hundreds brazenly broke through and hopped the barricades and sprinted past officers in a desperate attempt to catch a glimpse of their heroes parading through lower Manhattan.

Dozens of others perched atop scaffolding, subway entrances, street signs and the sides of buildings.

Those who couldn’t squeeze into the packed parade areas instead flooded into nearby bars, where they followed the floats pass by on the television.

“It’s nothing but pure joy out here. This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience,” said Kendall, who arrived at 6:30 a.m. but was turned away from the parade.

“Today, it doesn’t matter where you’re from, what your politics are. Today, we’re all New Yorkers,” the West Villager said.

The ticker tape parade concluded at City Hall, where the champions were presented with keys to the City of New York.

The players are the first to be bestowed the Mamdani-era commemorative keys, which feature an apple and leaf motif instead of the traditional seal of New York City.

“For as long as we live and you remember this feeling of a city together, a city alive, a city overcome by happiness,” Hizzoner said at the ceremony.

“This is our city. This is our team. For 53 years we watched, for 53 years we waited. Now we’ve won.”

California dominates top 10 best new restaurants in America list

California’s dining scene just scored another major bragging right.

The Golden State crushed the competition in a new Robb Report ranking of the 10 best new restaurants in America for 2026, claiming nearly half the list, and the coveted number one spot.

Taking the crown at the top is Lilo, an ultra-intimate fine dining destination tucked inside a former boogie board factory in Carlsbad, north of San Diego. The 24-seat tasting counter was crowned the best new restaurant in the country, beating out buzzy openings from New York, Chicago, Houston and beyond.

The honor caps a meteoric rise for the tiny Southern California powerhouse Lilo, which opened in 2025, and earned a Michelin star soon after opening.

Chef Eric Bost and restaurateur John Resnick transformed the former industrial space into a minimalist dining room centered around a chef’s counter, where guests are treated to an elaborate multi-course tasting menu.

California’s dominance didn’t stop there, as three other restaurants also landed on the top 10 list.

San Francisco landed two restaurants on the prestigious list: Wolfsbane, a high-end tasting menu destination in the city’s Dogpatch neighborhood from the team behind Michelin-starred Lord Stanley, and another buzzy newcomer, Chinese restaurant The Happy Crane.

Los Angeles also earned a spot on the ranking thanks to Lielle, the highly anticipated restaurant from three-Michelin-starred Swedish chef Marcus Jernmark.

The Beverly Hills adjacent hotspot that draws diners with its California-meets-Nordic menu and relaxed approach to fine dining.

Get discounted tickets for Phish summer 2026 tour

Nothing says summer quite like a Phish tour.

For the past 43 years — excluding a few short hiatuses and 2020 — Trey Anastasio, Jon Fishman, Mike Gordon and Page McConnell have embarked on a July through September jaunt at venues all over North America.

2026 is no different.

This time around, the legendary jam band has shows lined up at stadiums, arenas, music centers, parks, amphitheaters all over the U.S.

That includes a whopping five shows at New York City’s Madison Square Garden, their 92nd through 96th at the legendary House That Brunson Built venue. They’re scheduled to take place:

Wednesday, July 22
7:30 p.m.

Friday, July 24
7:30 p.m.

Saturday, July 25
7:30 p.m.

Monday, July 27
7:30 p.m.

Wednesday, July 29
7:30 p.m.

They’ll also be at Syracuse’s Empower Federal Credit Union Amphitheater on Tuesday, July 21.

If you’d like to see the one-of-a-kind, anything-goes ensemble live, tickets are available for all summer 2026 Phish concerts.

At the time of publication, the lowest price we could find on seats for any one gig was $46 including fees on SeatGeek.

Prices start at $101 including fees for shows on the MSG run.

Make sure to use promo code NYPOST10 for $10 off purchases over $250 at checkout (Editor’s Note: this discount is only valid for users’ first purchase on SeatGeek).

In the off-chance you’re a Phan that’s never caught the group live, you’re in for a real treat.

“…for those seeking adventure away from cookie-cutter arena rock, Phish still fit the bill,” The Arts Fuse wrote after attending three back-to-back-to-back shows in Manchester, NH last May.

“Of the 52 different songs played across the weekend (including some lengthy jams topped by an epic 42 minutes of “Tweezer” that wove in and out of Sunday’s exploratory final set), just seven tunes came from recordings since Phish’s reformation in 2009.”

Phish new music

On July 12, 2024, Phish dropped their 16th studio album “Evolve.”

As expected, the band completely surprises. No two songs are alike here; their only connection is the cosmically in-sync ensemble.

Personally, we were most taken with the slinky, bass-y, mysterious “Hey Stranger,” upbeat toe-tapper “A Wave Of Hope” and slow burn “Monsters.”

Be sure to try the restrained Beatles-esque “Valdese,” too. It’s impossible not to crack a smile while listening.

Want to check out the new record right now? You can find “Evolve” here.

What’s it like to see Phish live?

In December 2023, the New York Post spoke with comedian Max Fine about what it’s like to attend a Phish concert.

“It’s not like anything you’ve ever seen because it’s never happened before,” the Phan explained.

“Every show is special and unique because they don’t plan for it. You get to be whoever you want at a Phish show.”

Strait of Hormuz blockade lifted after US-Iran deal signed

The US-Iran agreement to extend the ceasefire centres around 14 core points, including an end to conflict “on all fronts”, an end to the blockade, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, for Iran to never have a nuclear weapon, and commits a $300bn fund for the “reconstruction and economic development” of the country – although the US is not required to contribute.

Why Iran believes deal with US leaves it stronger than before

The document, signed separately by US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, sets out a 60-day framework for negotiations over Iran’s nuclear programme but it also confirms an immediate halt to military operations on all fronts, including Lebanon, mutual respect for sovereignty, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the lifting of the US naval blockade on Iranian shipping.

Mexico vs. South Korea World Cup prediction: Odds, picks, best bets for Group A clash

Getting through to the knockout stage is priority No. 1 for Mexico, but El Tri will know it needs to win Group A if it wants to keep its home-field advantage into the Round of 32.

If Mexico tops the group, it will play a third-place finisher at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City on July 1. If they win that match, they’ll play at the same venue in the following round. That would be worth its weight in gold.

If Mexico fails to win the group, they’ll take on the second-place finisher in Group B in Los Angeles.

A victory over South Korea on Thursday would put El Tri in a commanding position to win Group A.

World Cup: Mexico vs. South Korea odds, prediction

Mexico barely put a foot wrong in the World Cup curtain-raiser against South Africa. The result, a 2-0 win for El Tri, never felt threatened, as South Africa was all out of sorts.

It was the classic sporting conundrum: Was Mexico that good? Or was South Africa just miles off it that day?

The answer was probably in the middle, but Javier Aguirre’s side deserves plenty of credit for the way it handled the pressure of opening a home World Cup in front of a massive audience.

South Korea’s 2-1 victory over Czechia on Matchday 1 was less comprehensive than Mexico’s, but it was quite impressive. The Taeguk Warriors played with tactical aggression and were able to overrun the Czechs with their pace and pressure.

Get the lowdown on the Best USA Sports Betting Sites and Apps

South Korea never panicked after going down 1-0, and were fully deserving of the result. They outshot Czechia 15-7, had 12 more touches in the opposition’s 18-yard box, and won the expected goals (xG) battle 2.3 to 0.8.

south-korea-vs-mexico-odds-picks
Son Heung-min heads the ball against Czechia. REUTERS

Mexico should be able to cope with South Korea’s relentlessness better than the Czechs did, but they aren’t particularly built to knock the ball around quickly to beat a press, and could be prone to turning the ball over in bad areas.

El Tri does have a significant advantage in terms of physicality, however. A rugged side that is happy to get stuck in, Mexico will have no issue turning this into a real tussle to slow the pace. They also have a clinical scoring threat, Raul Jimenez, who is as good with his head in front of goal as he is with his feet. That’s a huge plus against South Korea.

Both sides have tactical edges going forward and red flags to address on defense. There should be goals in this tilt.

The Play: Both teams to score — Yes (+106, FanDuel)

Mysteriously missing Rep. Tom Kean Jr. to return to Congress

Mysteriously missing New Jersey Rep. Thomas Kean Jr. has set a June 30 date to return to Congress — after having been absent from Capitol Hill since early March, his adviser said.

“Congressman Kean is eager to return to in-person work on June 30 and resume a full schedule,” his political advisor, Harrison Neely, told The Post.

The House is currently slated to break for Independence Day recess on July 2, just days after his planned return.

Kean (R-NJ) has missed over 135 roll call votes since March 5, when he last cast one. The Garden State Republican’s team told reporters that he was “dealing with a personal health matter” and “focused on his recovery” during his time away from the House.

To date, it’s still not clear exactly what health situation kept him away from Congress for just under four months.

Kean represents one of the most competitive districts in the country and did not make an appearance when he won the Republican nomination for his uncontested reelection.

The congressman is facing a bruising battle against Democrat Rebecca Bennett in New Jersey’s 7th district this cycle.

At times, some of Kean’s colleagues didn’t know what was going on with him.

The congressman hasn’t participated in a roll call vote since March 5. ZUMAPRESS.com

However, he has since had calls with key Republicans and did a brief interview with the New Jersey Globe, where he claimed that the health situation wasn’t impacting his cognitive skills and isn’t chronic.

“My doctors are confident that I’m on the road to a full recovery,” Kean, 57, told the New Jersey Globe on May 21. “I understand the need for public transparency, and I appreciate the support of my constituents.

“I anticipate that in the next couple of weeks, I’ll return to voting and to the campaign trail.”

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) has defended Kean during his absence and contended that the congressman will eventually explain to the public what happened to him.

“I do know what his health issue is, but he’s asked me not to disclose that, and I’m going to honor that,” Johnson told reporters earlier this month.

“He’s in good spirits,” the speaker explained. “It’s not a scandalous thing at all. People deal with health issues. Maybe that’s a newsflash for you, but even members of Congress get sick as well.”

Man sentenced to prison after passing out in In-N-Out drive-thru

A Northern California repeat drunk driver has been sentenced to three years behind bars after cops found him passed out behind the wheel in an In-N-Out Burger drive thru line.

Carlos Alvarez, 33, of Salinas, was arrested in June 2025 for driving under the influence.

A security guard at the burger joint located on Kern Street in Salinas alerted the California Highway Patrol to a “possible drunk driver that was asleep at the wheel in the drive through line.”

When officers arrived they found the man in a car that had a “strong pungent odor of urine, vomit, and an alcoholic beverage.”

Because of Alvarez’s prior convictions, he was taken into custody and arrested on a felony DUI charge.

The latest conviction marks not only his seventh DUI conviction for Alvarez, but his fourth felony DUI conviction in the last 10 years.

It is unclear at this time what kind of sentences he faced for his prior felony convictions, or if he served any time behind bars for any of the other DUI sentences.

Multiple agencies were involved in the case including the Monterey County District Attorney’s Vertical DUI Prosecution Unit and the California Highway Patrol.

In January, the unit was awarded nearly $800,000 in state grants for the special group of prosecutors to deal with cases involving impaired drivers from alcohol and drugs, per a county press release.

“We are grateful for this grant, which will allow us to focus specifically on holding individuals accountable for impaired driving and making the roads in our community safer for everyone,” Monterey County District Attorney Jeannine M. Pacioni said.

“Impaired driving remains a significant danger on our roads, particularly drivers suspected of operating a vehicle under the influence of both alcohol and drugs.

“This funding strengthens our commitment to improving road safety and making sure justice is served effectively and efficiently,” she added.
