In a milestone for water security and safety infrastructure, the fully replaced set of 33 steel crest gates of the Tungabhadra Dam at Hosapete in Vijayanagara district will be formally dedicated to the public on Thursday (June 25, 2026).
The inauguration ceremony, scheduled for 11 a.m., will take place at the Government High School Ground in Munirabad, Koppal district.
Jointly organised by the Water Resources Department and the Tungabhadra Board, the event marks the successful culmination of an unprecedented engineering and restoration exercise.
Reflecting the immense inter-State significance of the project, the dedication ceremony will see a high-profile gathering of top political leaders and administrators from the Union government and the three riparian States.
As per the official invitation brochure, the formal inauguration will be performed by Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar. The event will feature a stellar line-up of dignitaries, including Union Minister for Jal Shakti C.R. Patil, Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh N. Chandrababu Naidu and Chief Minister of Telangana A. Revanth Reddy.
Underscoring the collaborative spirit of the project, Deputy Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh K. Pawan Kalyan, Deputy Chief Minister of Telangana Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, Deputy Chief Minister G. Parameshwara and Water Resources Minister Ramalinga Reddy will also attend.
The entire proceedings will be presided over by local legislator K. Raghavendra Hitnal, who represents the Koppal Assembly Constituency.
The event is also expected to host senior Union Ministers of State, regional Water Resources Ministers, local Members of Parliament and high-ranking technocrats, including the Chairman of the Central Water Commission.
Overhaul following crisis
The large-scale overhaul was initiated in the wake of a major structural crisis during the 2024 monsoon.
In August 2024, the sudden washout of Gate No 19 amid heavy inflows triggered intense anxiety among downstream agrarian communities and residents across the Tungabhadra basin.
The failure exposed the ageing vulnerabilities of the reservoir’s decades-old gate system, prompting immediate engineering interventions.
Rather than opting for quick, piecemeal repairs, the administrative authorities took a definitive, long-term safety decision to completely replace all 33 crest gates with brand new, high-grade steel structures to ensure foolproof regulation and operational reliability during the monsoon.
Inter-State lifeline
The Tungabhadra reservoir remains a vital inter-State lifeline, serving agricultural command areas across Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
Millions of farmers rely heavily on the Left Bank Canal, the Right Bank Canal and interconnected distributaries for irrigation, while several municipalities depend on it for drinking water supply.
Senior officials noted that the completion of this gate replacement work well ahead of the heavy monsoon inflows serves as a major confidence booster for the region.
It not only reinforces structural safety but also highlights excellent inter-State coordination in managing shared water resources, ensuring the reservoir stands fully prepared to handle upcoming seasonal inflows safely.
