The Belagavi Police have registered a case against president of MES Youth Wing Shubham Shelke on the charge of trying to disturb peace by creating rift between Kannada and Marathi speaking people.
The Tilakwadi Police have registered the case based on a complaint filed by a resident of Angol in Belagavi about a speech made by Mr. Shelke at a function organised at Maratha Mandir in Belagavi.
According to the complainant Siddappa Somanath Hosamani of Ambedkar Nagar in Angol, Shubham Shelke in his speech made on June 16 at Maratha Mandir told the gathering not to purchase any item with shops not having name boards in Marathi.
“Shopkeeper who has name boards both in Kannada and Marathi, is like a brother who treats Kannada and Marathi similarly. However, if a shopkeeper has a nameboard only in Kannada, then we should not purchase anything from him or her,” Mr. Shelke said during the function, according to the complainant.
The complaint was filed on Wednesday.
