A 26-year-old woman who is said to have been assaulted by her husband with an iron rod in a forest area near Honnikeri village in Bidar district died of her injuries while undergoing treatment at Solapur in Maharashtra, two days after the incident.
The deceased was identified as Sanjana, a native of Honnikeri village in Bidar taluk. The accused, Bhagwat Gyaneshwar, a resident of Bolegaon village in Bhalki taluk, has been remanded to judicial custody.
According to the police, the couple were married for about two years. They were residents of Shivnagar in Bidar city.
In a complaint, the deceased woman’s brother has said that the accused took Sanjana to the Mailar Mallanna temple on Bidar-Udgir Road on Thursday last and later, drove towards Honnikeri.
On the way, he stopped the vehicle in a forest area and assaulted her with an iron rod, causing grievous injuries. The complainant further said that his brother-in-law made an attempt to strangulate his sister before fleeing the scene.
The injured woman was initially admitted to a private hospital in Bidar and was later shifted to a hospital in Solapur, Maharashtra, where she died of her injuries despite treatment.
The complainant said that the victim was also previously subjected to harassment by her in-laws and the assault may have been linked to disputes arising from her husband’s extramarital relationship.
The police said that the motive for the crime is yet to be ascertained.
The body has been shifted to the Bidar Institute of Medical Sciences (BRIMS) for post-mortem examination.
A case has been registered at the Dhannur Police Station based on the complaint filed by the victim’s brother.
