DR Congo authorities search for Ebola patient, aged six, after armed men storm hospital

“People are not properly informed or sensitised about what is happening. For a certain segment of the population, especially in remote areas, Ebola is an invention by outsiders – it does not exist,” local politician Luc Malembe told the BBC last month.

Luigi Mangione will argue a psychiatric defense in state trial for United Healthcare CEO murder

Luigi Mangione will use a psychiatric defense at his upcoming trial in the killing of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson, a Manhattan judge revealed at a bombshell court hearing Wednesday.

Manhattan Supreme Court Judge Gregory Carro said Tuesday Mangione’s lawyers will argue that he was in the throes of an “extreme emotional disturbance” when he gunned down Thompson in December 2024.

The legal gambit would knock the charge down to manslaughter instead of murder — carrying less prison time — if jurors buy it.

The alleged assassin’s apparent psychiatric issues weren’t immediately clear, but Carro said that his attorneys must tell Manhattan prosecutors what their defense will be for the upcoming Sept. 8 trial.

“They need to know what the malady this defendant suffers and how that triggered extreme emotion disturbance at the time of the occurrence,” the judge said.

Carro ordered Mangione’s attorneys to share more details with the DA’s office by Thursday and how it triggered Thompson’s targeting.

Gavin Newsom desperately tries to flip the script on Trump with aggressive new letter

California Governor Gavin Newsom has tried to flip the script on President Trump and his administration as he and his wife Jennifer face a Department of Justice investigation.

“The United States Department of Justice selectively leaked uncorroborated details about ongoing investigative matters involving the Governor and First Partner, so it should not be a problem for you to confirm whether US DOJ has opened any investigations into the instances of apparent public corruption detailed above involving the President and his allies,” Newsom wrote in a letter he shared Tuesday night.

“Which is it?” he continued, asking whether the DOJ is targeting the President’s enemies or enforcing the law impartially.

In a letter addressed to Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche—who has not publicly commented on the investigation—Newsom accused the Trump administration and the DOJ of pursuing a politically motivated “fishing expedition” against him.

“Calling this investigation a fishing expedition is actually too generous. If your commitment to rooting out corruption were serious, the enormous resources that you have poured into this investigation looking for a crime that does not exist would be focused elsewhere,” Newsom, who is weighing a 2028 presidential run, wrote.

“You need only train your attention on the open-air corruption market that the White House has become,” he added, listing a series of alleged ethical concerns involving the administration.

Newsom further accused the nation’s top officials of applying double standards in their handling of investigations and public accountability.

In his letter, Newsom argued that federal authorities are targeting political opponents while ignoring alleged conflicts of interest and self-dealing involving the President, his family, and close allies.

As examples, Newsom pointed to a series of reports, including cash the Trump family made from cryptocurrency ventures.

With respect to the cryptocurrency investment and the technology deal involving Trump Media & Technology Group, Trump’s campaign has stated that the two matters are unrelated.

As of now, no formal investigations have been announced in connection with the claims, which have primarily been raised in media reports.

“You may respond that US DOJ policy prohibits prosecuting the sitting President. But that is no excuse for ignoring open and notorious corruption by his family and those around him,” Newsom wrote.

This is Newsom’s second letter to the Trump administration. The first was a Freedom of Information Act request seeking any documents, text messages, Signal chats, or emails mentioning the words “Gavin Newsom,” “Jennifer Siebel Newsom,” or “Gavin” among top DOJ officials, including former Attorney General Pam Bondi, who was fired by Trump.

The White House and DOJ have not made any official comments or publicly addressed Newsom’s accusations, which he made public in a video on Monday alleging that the administration was targeting him, his family, and his friends.

The California Post has reached out to DOJ for comment.

Olivia Wilde describes mortifying Tom Cruise interaction after custody papers attack

Olivia Wilde wanted her viral custody papers moment to remain under the radar — but that was Mission: Impossible.

A couple months after the “Don’t Worry, Darling” director went viral for being served onstage during a 2022 CinemaCon presentation, she had a mortifying interaction with Tom Cruise, Wilde said on Wednesday’s “Call Her Daddy” podcast episode.

When she met the “Top Gun” star, 63, he said, “Hi, I’m Tom. F–ked up what happened to you in Vegas.”

Olivia Wilde was mortified when an A-list actor brought up the “traumatizing” moment she was served custody papers onstage, she said on “Call Her Daddy” Wednesday. Call Her Daddy/Youtube

Wilde recalled, “I was like, ‘No!’ I was like, ‘OK, so it went wide.’ Got it, got it.”

The actress, 42, had been hoping “no one saw it because there [were] no phones allowed in this event” — but then realized, “Oh, it’s already up on Page Six? There’s a video?”

At the time, she told herself, “No one’s gonna look because no one’s paying attention.”

The “Booksmart” director said Wednesday she then realized the news had really gone “wide.” Call Her Daddy/Youtube

The “O.C.” alum, who is now able to “laugh about” the “incredibly traumatizing” moment, said she was able to “muscle through the most insane” situation and finish her speech before “dissolving into a puddle” backstage.

As for whether she believes the headline-making moment was “purposeful” on her ex Jason Sudeikis’ part, she “need[s] to believe” it wasn’t — as he has claimed — “in order to continue” co-parenting with him.

Wilde noted that “lawyers can be f–ked up and do super f–ked up things,” but acknowledged, “I think people are never their best selves when they’re engaging in that kind of process.

“I know whether or not he knew it was going to happen, I know it hurt him to see it happen to me,” she continued. “I know he felt very, very bad that it happened to me.”

The “House” alum, who has “done a lot of therapy” about the “vulnerable” and “high stress” moment, is confident she can “make it through anything” after that.

Wilde addressed the scandal in a August 2022 Variety interview, the same month she slammed Sudeikis’ “outrageous” and “aggressive” tactics in court documents.

“It was not something that was entirely surprising to me,” she said of the “vicious” move. “I mean, there’s a reason I left that relationship.”

Elsewhere in Wednesday’s episode, Wilde broke down the exact moment she knew her romance with the “Ted Lasso” star, 50, was over and shared their coparenting ups and downs.

“These kids are consistently getting the best of us in a way that when we were together was not possible,” the “I Want Your Sex” star insisted. “We did not work together, but we work really well separated.”

Germany records highest-ever number of antisemitic incidents

The number of antisemitic incidents documented in Germany in 2025 rose slightly from the previous year to a record 8,725, the Berlin-based Federal Association of Departments for Research and Information on Antisemitism (RIAS) said in its annual report on Wednesday.

“The number of incidents has remained consistently high since Oct. 7, 2023, and continues to affect the lives of Jewish people,” the report said, adding that “Israel-related antisemitism” accounted for 68% of all incidents.

The 2025 tally, up by 98 incidents from 2024, included 178 assaults and 257 cases involving threats.

The 2022 tally stood at 2,480 incidents.

Among the incidents documented in the 2025 report was a case in Kehl, a western border town near Strasbourg, where four members of the Jewish community were insulted and spat on outside a Jewish prayer room.

In the central state of Hesse, a rabbi was shoved in a supermarket in front of his children and had his cellphone snatched. The perpetrators referenced Israel during the attack, according to RIAS.

The report documented four cases of “extreme violence,” including a terrorist attack at the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe in Berlin.

Josef Schuster, president of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, noted that the tally translates to about 24 incidents per day.

“These are not statistical outliers; it is the grim reality in Germany.

The 2025 annual report from RIAS clearly shows that we are witnessing antisemitism solidify at record levels rather than easing,” he said in a statement.

31 otherwordly sea creatures discovered in South Atlantic

The ocean’s hiding some deep secrets.

An oceanic expedition off Brazil has discovered 31 otherworldly new critters, including ghostly invertebrates, animals living inside their own bodily fluids and other creatures seemingly better suited to deep space than the deep blue sea.

“The largest habitat on Earth, the midwater, is filled with incredible animals we are only just starting to understand,” said the expedition leader, Dr. Karen Osborn of the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in a statement.

The international team of researchers, who were stationed aboard the Schmidt Ocean Institute’s research vessel Falkor (too), happened upon the marine menagerie while surveying the tropical South Atlantic Ocean.

They were specifically investigating the midwater — the segment of ocean situated between the sunlit layer and the ocean floor, which is Earth’s “largest and least explored habitable ecosystem,” per the survey.

Using advanced imaging systems and genome sequences, they were able to confirm and describe the aforementioned dozens of denizens of this aquatic lost world.

Finds included ghostly gossamer worms, comb jellies that propel themselves along with glittering appendages, and single-celled organisms that were paradoxically big enough to see with the naked eye, Science Alert reported.

The team also discovered siphonophores, colonial organisms related to jellyfish and corals, and tadpole-like critters called larvaceans that erect houses from mucus and are more closely related to humans than invertebrates.

Also present in this remote environment, which is one of Earth’s least understood ecosystems to its volume and inaccessibility, were some familiar faces: a translucent glass squid and a pelagic octopus consuming a bright red sea jelly.

“I continue to be fascinated by the fantastic variety of solutions they have evolved to survive in this formidable environment,” Osborn gushed.

These miraculous finds were a credit to state of the art tech that allowed scientists to study the inhabitants in a matter of days rather than years.

Part of the challenge was studying these critters delicate, gelatinous bodies without damaging them.

To circumvent this, the researchers outfitted the remotely operated vehicle (ROV) SuBastian with the DeepPIV (particle image velocimetry) instrument and the EyeRIS (remote imaging system).

These employed laser scans to generate 3D images of the critter, precluding the team from having to wrest the animals from their homes.

Meanwhile, a shadowgraph camera, developed by the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology, allowed the researchers to snap the critter’s silhouettes, revealing some features that didn’t show up in the laser scans.

The researchers deployed Stanford University’s Squid microscope to observe the interaction between living cellular structures and the glass skeleton of a single-celled microbe called a protist.

This marked the first time this device has been used in this manner.

“It’s an incredible honor to not only view and experience this rare and inspiring midwater life, but also to be able to work towards describing and sharing that life broadly through the use of novel, non-invasive technologies,” exclaimed Dr. Kakani Katija, principal engineer of the Bioinspiration Lab at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute.

‘World’s ugliest man’ has disease that turns muscles into bone

Godfrey Baguma is the first to proclaim it: “I am the ugliest man in the world! The whole world!”

Back in 2002, Godfrey, now 63, took part in the competition for Uganda’s ugliest person and won.

While most people would be pretty heartbroken to earn such a title, Godfrey lives with an extremely rare life threatening and condition called fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP), also known as “stone man disease” — so standing out with such a superlative made him feel special.

“When I won the title for being the ugliest man, I was like, this is who I am,” he says in an exclusive clip from a new episode of “Most Extreme Humans,” airing Wednesday, June 17 at 9pm ET on TLC. “I’ve made it this far, I’m still good for something. It gave me confidence.”

TLC

What is FOP?

The muscles and connective tissue of people with FOP gradually turn to bone over the course of their life. This process starts in childhood, when the neck and shoulders become frozen, and gradually moves down through the limbs, restricting movement.

If muscles around the mouth and jaw turn to bone, it can block speech and eating. Bone expansion around the ribcage can limit breathing.

“This disease attacks the muscles. They grow and turn into bone there is a lot of pain,” Baguma said.

What’s especially frightening is that any kind of injury (like a fall or surgery), and even viruses like the flu, can cause bone to grow even faster.

Even injections like vaccinations or numbing at the dentist’s office might cause extra bone to form.

Swelling is a major problem of FOP as new bone presses on lymphatic vessels, obstructing the flow of lymphatic fluid, and causing the liquid to pool in a limb.

Baguma’s condition is extremely rare, affecting one in a million people worldwide, with only several hundred cases ever recorded.

TLC

People with FOP have some options for treatment, including a drug that limits new bone formation, which was approved by the FDA in 2023. They may also take antibiotics because of their increased risk for respiratory infection, and corticosteroids to help with pain and swelling.

People like Baguma also need special shoes and braces to help walk and go about daily life as bone stiffens the limbs.

Godfrey’s story

Baguma was born in a small village in Uganda, where he faced ridicule and discrimination.

“Over the years, many people have called me ‘gorilla,’” he says in the new episode. “Some call me ‘monkey,’ some call me ‘baboon.’ This is normal. I’m used to it now.”

He first noticed something was wrong when he experienced abnormal swelling to his cheek at age 10.

Still, he went undiagnosed well into adulthood, going on to have eight children — six with the love of his life, Namande Kate.

“I told her that I didn’t choose to look the way I do and that if she feels I am a burden, she is free to leave me,” he previously told KFM.

TLC

However, she told Barcroft: “Godfrey’s not handsome on the outside, but he has a good heart. I wish people would see him the way I see him.”

About a decade ago, Dr. Tony Wilson, the head of medicine at Mbarara Hospital in Uganda, performed an MRI and finally diagnosed him. He was reassured that he could not pass the condition on to his children.

All the while, he has refused to let this condition define him. He’s pursued music, motivational speaking and comedy.

He encourages others with messages of self-acceptance and striving to overcome adversity and systemic discrimination.

Baguma shares his story on “Most Extreme Humans,” a new show on TLC telling the stories of people living with rare medical conditions and overcoming the odds.

Blake Lively attempts to extend Justin Baldoni legal battle even further

Blake Lively sought to extend her legal battle against Justin Baldoni by requesting additional time to present all materials to the court.

On Tuesday, the “Gossip Girl” alum filed a letter to the court, saying that she would have trouble meeting the June 22 deadline she was given to file her initial brief on the “appropriate measure of fees” that Baldoni would owe her due to her hectic schedule.

The letter, obtained by Page Six, stated that Lively and her lawyers “have a number of conflicting personal and professional obligations, including international travel.”

“One of Ms. Lively’s lead attorneys, Mr. Gottlieb, who will need to review and approve any billing submissions and sign any affidavit on behalf of the Willkie firm, is currently out of the country,” the doc stated.

The actress requested “an additional seven days” to submit her initial brief.

The newest filing comes two weeks after Lively, 38, took Baldoni, 42, back to court after they settled their explosive legal battle.

According to court documents obtained by Page Six, Judge Lewis Liman addressed damages related to the “Five Feet Apart” director’s dismissed $400 million defamation lawsuit against Lively.

Lively requested that her “It Ends With Us” co-star cover her legal fees and costs from the defamation case — which was thrown out last November.

On June 12, the judge decided that Baldoni must pay Lively’s legal fees related to the suit, per court documents obtained by Page Six.

The court has to assess how much the dad of two will pay.

In May, Livley settled her 2024 suit against Baldoni, in which the actress claimed the actor sexually harassed her on the set of “It Ends With Us.”

Both Lively and the “Jane the Virgin” alum earned no money in their lawsuit settlement. However, sources told Page Six Hollywood that their legal teams made $60 million combined through the process.

The “A Simple Favor” is now plotting a Hollywood comeback.
