Brendan Sorsby’s NFL intentions trigger a potentially divisive Jets quandary

The Brendan Sorsby gambling drama is about to leave the world of college football and enter the world of the NFL and teams may have to make a decision on whether to take a gamble of their own on him.

Among those teams are the Jets, who are perpetually searching for a franchise quarterback. If the NFL grants his application to be entered in a supplemental draft next month, it figures to be a divisive issue among Jets fans whether to take Sorsby, who announced Monday he was dropping his challenge to play this season at Texas Tech.

The Jets could use another quarterback. They have Geno Smith as their starter and Bailey Zappe, Brady Cook and rookie fourth-round pick Cade Klubnik as the potential backups. Sorsby is viewed by some as a first-round talent and the idea of using a lower pick on him in the supplemental draft could be seen as low risk and high reward.

Others view Sorsby as too risky after it was discovered he had wagered approximately $90,000 over four years, including 40 bets involving Indiana football when he was a freshman there.

Quick, 18, was shot in the back of the head outside a McDonald’s in Clovis in April 2025.

Prosecutors allege two 16-year-olds, identified as Cassandra Michael and Byron Rangel, carried out the killing after rumors circulated that Quick had sexually assaulted a girl following a house party.

Testimony during a transfer hearing revealed the allegation stemmed from an incident after a Clovis house party on April 13.

Multiple teenagers reportedly told investigators they heard claims that Quick assaulted an intoxicated girl connected to a friend of the accused.

Authorities said the girl had been drinking heavily and had little memory of what happened after falling asleep.

Quick’s father, Stephen Quick, has rejected any suggestion that the rumors justified his son’s death.

“It’s not a justification for this behavior — premeditated first-degree murder,” he said.

“They acted on it like vengeance. They had 24 hours to make this decision, and whatever allegations they had against him, it was not within their authority to act on. That’s why we have laws.”

Quick died just weeks before he was set to graduate high school.

Michael and Rangel, who were dating at the time of the shooting, have both been charged with murder. Prosecutors are seeking to determine whether the pair should be tried as adults.

The White House letter marks the latest high-profile development in a case that has drawn widespread attention across California as prosecutors continue to build their case against the two teens.

Paul Pierce sentenced to probation in DUI case

Paul Pierce cut a plea deal with Los Angeles prosecutors on Tuesday to close out his DUI case, court records obtained by The California Post show.

Pierce pleaded nolo contendere to one misdemeanor count of wet reckless driving upon a highway, per the records, and was sentenced to 12 months of probation.

The Boston Celtics legend was also ordered to pay a $375 fine and complete multiple courses, including a MADD Victim Impact Program, according to the records.

Prior to striking the agreement with officials, Pierce had been facing one count of driving under the influence of alcohol and one count of driving with .08% blood alcohol content after authorities alleged they found him asleep and intoxicated at the wheel of an SUV on a busy Los Angeles highway on Oct. 7, 2025.

Both charges were dismissed following Pierce’s plea, the records show.

Pierce — an Inglewood native — was accused by the California Highway Patrol of passing out in his ride after officers closed down a portion of the 101 freeway to attend to a multi-car crash.

When lanes reopened, law enforcement officers alleged they found Pierce knocked out in the driver’s seat and “noted signs of alcohol impairment” during an ensuing investigation.

Pierce, 48, was ultimately arrested, though in a statement he posted on Threads days after the incident, he said he merely fell asleep while waiting for traffic to clear.

“Imagine being stuck in stand still traffic for 45 mins and falling asleep 🤦🏾‍♂️ I took this picture that night because I never been in stand still traffic for this long,” Pierce posted Thursday to Threads. “I’m old, I’m tired, and I fell asleep 🤷🏾‍♂️I’m good y’all thanks for the love.”

Messages seeking comment from Pierce’s attorney as well as the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office on Tuesday afternoon were not immediately returned.

Paul Tudor Jones’ family in crisis after daughter at UFC

The action is over inside the Claw, but a family is still going a few rounds over the UFC 250 event.

Hedgefund billionaire Paul Tudor Jones II and his family — who are pals with the Obamas — are having a “‘bit of a family freaking out” over his musician daughter’s appearance at the brawl, a source tells Page Six.

We hear the family members are trying to distance themselves from their wayward child, and apparently they’re particularly upset over an insult thrown at former First Lady Michelle Obama.

Robinhood Foundation founder Paul’s daughter Caroline Jones sang the National Anthem at the event on South Lawn of the White House as member of the Zac Brown Band. The group, standing on a Monster Energy logo decked in red, white and blue, performed alongside the United States Marine Band as the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds and the U.S. Navy Blue Angels flew overhead.

Later during the event, UFC heavyweight Josh Hokit said, “Michelle Obama is a man. Am I right, America?”

“The family is trying to figure out how to navigate this, especially the Michelle slur” says a source.

We’re told they’ve gone so far as to asked Caroline to “be quiet about it and not post.”

Caroline’s father, billionaire Paul Tudor, was a political backer of Barack Obama and friends with him and Michelle, says our source. He is shown here at the Crystal Bridges Museum in Arkansas in 2019. Gage Skidmore/ZUMA Press Wire / Shutterstock

“[Their] Obama friendship is really important to them,” said the source.

Another source tells us that they would not characterize the reaction as a “freak out,” but says there is “concern.”

Paul, whose worth an estimated $8.1 billion, was a major early backer of Obama, helping the campaign raise $750,000 with a benefit at his Connecticut home in 2007 that drew the likes of Tyra Banks and George Soros. He was at the White House in 2011 for a meeting between Obama and two dozen Wall Street executives to discuss the economy.

Paul — who has given to candidates across the political spectrum— wound up defecting and donating to Romney during the 2012 election cycle. Meanwhile that same year, his wife Sonia held a $40,000-per-person fundraiser for Obama at Sarah Jessica Parker’s home.

A source tells us that the relationship is not just political, but that the Jones and Obamas have taken vacations together.

Zac Brown explained his reasoning for appearing at the event as “patriotism, not politics.”

“I’m there for the troops, man,” Brown said on the Pat McAfee show earlier this week. “I’m there to honor America. This is patriotism, not politics, for me. F*ck all the division. I don’t believe in that. I love this country, I love all the people that have sacrificed so I can live my American dream, and that everyone who lives here gets the chance to do that if they work hard, [and] make the right decisions.

Reps for both Paul and Caroline did not respond to request for comment.

Broncos’ Jonathon Cooper excused from minicamp after arrests: ‘Got to work on himself’

Jonathon Cooper was not at the opening day of the Broncos’ mandatory minicamp on Tuesday after being arrested twice in a week.

“We’ve excused him from this minicamp,” coach Sean Payton told reporters. “He’s taking this time; obviously, he’s got to work on himself. The club is very much in tune to the league office, local authorities here, and we’ve had several meetings.

“Clearly, from an ownership standpoint, head coach, organizationally, there’s a bar we have and an expectation we have that’s very high. We’ll consider all that as we continue to gather information.”

The 28-year-old pass rusher and his girlfriend were arrested on June 4 in Parker, Colo., following an alleged domestic dispute over a cell phone.

He was arrested again on June 12 for violating a protection order after he allegedly continued to make contact with his girlfriend through texts, calls and appearing at her home.

That added charges of violating a protection order and harassment on top of his felony assault by strangulation, third-degree assault, of knowingly or recklessly causing bodily injury, and a misdemeanor for domestic violence.

Cooper pleaded not guilty to the domestic violence charge on Monday, with a trial set for July 22, which is right before Broncos training camp.

The NFL has said it is monitoring the case, “which remains under review of the personal conduct policy.”

Cooper, a seventh-round pick in 2021 out of Ohio State, has emerged as a star on the field for Denver, totaling at least eight sacks each season since 2023. That production, earned him a four-year, $60 million extension with $33 million guaranteed in 2024.

Brazil’s top court convicts son of former President Bolsonaro for coercion

SAO PAULO — Brazil’s Supreme Court convicted former lawmaker Eduardo Bolsonaro on Tuesday for coercion related to the trial that last year sentenced his father and ex- President Jair Bolsonaro to 27 years in prison for a coup attempt.

The court sentenced him to four years and two months in prison. All five justices considering the case agreed he illegally interfered by lobbying the U.S. government to threaten Brazilian officials to stop the trial.

Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who also oversaw the former president’s coup attempt case, said Eduardo Bolsonaro’s job as a federal lawmaker “is not to lobby overseas against his own country.” De Moraes and his wife were sanctioned by the U.S. government in July last year.

Lawyers for Eduardo Bolsonaro disputed the verdict, saying there was not enough evidence to convict him. The former lawmaker has lived in Texas since February 2025.

U.S. President Donald Trump slapped Brazil with a 50% tariff last year in protest of Jair Bolsonaro ‘s prosecution for trying to overturn his electoral defeat to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in 2022.

Trump’s relations with Lula seem to have improved in early May, when the Brazilian leader visited the White House, but then in June the U.S. government once again proposed 25% tariffs on imports from Brazil, claiming the world’s 10th-biggest economy engages in unreasonable trade practices.

Lula said that during his visit to Washington in early May, he handed Trump documents showing that the U.S. has a trade surplus with Brazil.

Eduardo Bolsonaro did not make comments about the Supreme Court’s decision. He is campaigning for his brother Sen. Flávio Bolsonaro, who is expected to challenge Lula in October’s elections although his candidacy has faced a recent scandal related to a payment to a disgraced banker.

Eduardo and Flávio Bolsonaro recently visited U.S. officials in Washington, including Trump.

The transformative decisions Mike Brown that turned Knicks’ gamble into an NBA title

The coaching change, in the words of James Dolan, “shocked the world last year.” By firing Tom Thibodeau, the owner got rid of the franchise’s most successful coach in 25 years, who was coming off its best season in that same span.

The reasons were multilayered but largely based on the idea that Thibodeau didn’t collaborate enough with his players and staff. In other words, as Dolan’s reasoning went, Thibs won plenty of games but could’ve won more if he weren’t so authoritative.

It was illogical in theory but genius in practice.

Tom Thibodeau Charles Wenzelberg / New York Post

“We changed coaches at the end of last season because we believed that you, the players, and the rest of the organization, needed to be heard,” Dolan told his players before the playoffs. “Needed to work together. Needed to be heard. Not just led or dictated to. And Coach Thibs was a great coach. Brilliant. But we thought you needed a coach that would pull you together. That would have you playing as a team. And although that’s not been perfect, we believe that together, a joint effort, would be better. Would give us a shot at winning a championship — rather than relying on one person’s opinion. And that’s the team we have now. We believe that instead of relying on the coach that you would discipline each other, that you talk to each other, that you would figure out how to play together with each other. And that was stronger than just hearing that from one voice.”
