Jose Alvarado’s high school coach lauds ‘loyal’ Knicks champion

The Knicks’ first NBA championship in 53 years had a local flavor.

Traded deadline acquisition Jose Alvarado, a Brooklyn native, offered his Christ the King in Middle Village, Queens coach a moment of reflection nearly a decade after the freshly minted champ played for him.

“I wasn’t thinking in this picture that Alvarado would one day win an NBA Championship. I was probably telling him to stop sneaking into the corner and get back on defense,” Joe Arbitello wrote on Instagram. “Proud is an understatement. This kid is a product of doing things the right way.”

Arbitello described some of the characteristics that make Alvarado such a successful player, noting his loyalty was notable, as he stayed at Christ the King and played for just one AAU team throughout his amateur career in what is a rarity, especially in this era.

The loyalty extended to his college decision, as he picked and stuck with Georgia Tech for his entire college career.

Another trait described by Arbitello was that whenever he was on the bench, Alvardo was always engaged in the game and never moped.

The coach recalled the young point guard telling him from the bench that he was “getting paid to have the best seat in the house.”

That quote proved somewhat prophetic as Alvarado became one of the Knicks’ first bench options after coming over from the Pelicans on Feb. 5.

His addition proved critical to the team’s championship run as he drained critical three-pointers during comebacks in Games 4 and 5 and gave star Jalen Brunson crucial rest by playing quality minutes.

Now, Christ the King, which boasts the likes of Lamar Odom, Jayson Williams, Speedy Claxton, Sue Bird, Chamique Holdsclaw and Tina Charles among its alumni, has another NBA champion among its graduates.

Father-son Knicks fans ‘sucker-punched’ outside San Antonio hotel after NY clinched championship

A father-son duo in San Antonio to watch their beloved Knicks win the NBA championship Saturday claimed they were assaulted by a pair of Spurs fans outside of their hotel.

The victim, 29, told KSAT that he and his father, 62, were jumped by two people wearing Spurs gear near Hotel Valencia Riverwalk around 12:30 a.m. Saturday.

The man said he and his dad, both wearing Knicks jerseys, were returning from the Game 5 title-clinching win when they were targeted.

His father was taken to a local hospital for treatment after the assault, according to the San Antonio Police Department, though the severity of his injuries are unclear.

An anonymous Knicks fan shared a post on the Knicks subreddit recounting a near-identical assault, though it’s unconfirmed if it was posted by the same 29-year-old man.

The Redditor asked for members of Knicks nation to “pray for my Dad” after two strangers “sucker-punched” them while they were stepping out of their Uber near the Hotel Valencia Riverwalk on Saturday.

The user detailed their 62-year-old father’s harrowing injuries, ranging from a “small brain bleed” to gashes on his face that required stitches. He said his father has since been discharged.

“This was terrifying. One of the best moments of my life turned into one of the worst,” the redditor wrote.

The two suspects are still at large, according to the San Antonio Police Department.

And while the majority of the celebrations remained under control some clashes did erupt between Knicks and Spurs fans.

One daredevil Spurs fan went viral for trying to fight every Knicks fan in his immediate vicinity inside Moynihan Train Hall at Penn Station on Saturday night. He was seen chasing down multiple Knicks fans while throwing uncoordinated punches before a police officer escorted him away.

On Wednesday, 17-year-old Johnny Aumuller was beaten into a coma by a brute bellowing “Spurs in 7” during a livestreamed Midtown brawl.

The San Antonio Police Department said it is investigating several viral videos capturing “assaults against New York Knicks fans” in the city.

Jalen Brunson mocks Josh Hart over missed layup that nearly doomed Knicks

Friends poke fun at each other all the time.

That was no different on Monday morning when the ‘Nova Knicks took to the table on “Today.”

Jalen Brunson could not help himself when asked why Madison Square Garden is a great venue for a wedding — celebrity fan Taylor Swift is reported to be having her nuptials there this summer — he had to throw a verbal jab at teammate Josh Hart about his moment to forget in Game 4.

Three men are seated at a table with an audience behind them, with purple flowers and pink mugs on the table.
Jalen Brunson,Josh Hart, and Mikal Bridges on Good Morning America @jonmoxIeys/X

“A lot of great things happen there. When we’re down one, and you miss wide-open layups.” Brunson said while hugging Hart.

Hart had a retort at the ready.

“For me, I just wanted to set up an epic last possession. We wouldn’t have that OG tip-in without that missed layup,” Hart said. “I was willing to sacrifice that layup so OG could get the tip-in. I was trying to be a good teammate.”

Hart’s missed layup threatened the Knicks’ historic 29-point comeback win with just over two minutes left in the fourth quarter.

But after two uncharacteristic missed free throws by Victor Wembanyama and a basket by Brunson, it set up the infamous OG Anunoby tip-in that sealed Game 4.

That historic comeback shifted the momentum of the series, leading to the Knicks’ Game 5 win, clinching the series, and their first championship since 1973.

Brunson had one of his best games of the playoffs, scoring 45 points in yet another late rally.

It is another trophy that the ‘Nova Knicks — Brunson, Hart and Mikal Bridges — can add to their collection after winning the national championship in 2016 with Villanova.

All three will return next season with back-to-back championships in mind.

But first, the Knicks take to the road on Thursday for a parade and a trip down the Canyon of Heroes.

The best supplements for dogs for overall health

Some call a dog man’s best friend, but if you’re an actual pet parent, you know they’re bona fide family members.

Besides being a much cuter alternative to a fancy alarm system, they provide companionship and the type of love some of us don’t even experience with other humans.

Having a dog has been scientifically shown to reduce stress and slow cognitive decline, giving owners all the more reason to provide their four-legged pals with the best care. While that can come in the way of the top food and treats, the best dog supplements offer another way to support their well-being.

Like supplements for humans, supplements for dogs can fill nutritional gaps, improve digestion, joint health and mobility — all the things that lead to a happier pet.

Not all supplements are created equal, so this isn’t the type of product to practice your blind buying skills on.

For tips on what to look for and avoid, jump to our FAQ below, or keep scrolling to see our tight roundup of the top supplements for your furry friend. Note: It’s important to speak with your veterinarian before adding anything new to your dog’s routine.

A box of Purina Pro Plan probiotics
Amazon

Pros:

  • Provides relief from diarrhea.
  • Powder formula is easy to mix in wet food.
  • Comes in a liver flavor pets love.

Cons:

  • Serving size may overwhelm smaller portions of wet food.

Changes in lifestyle, medication, or stress levels can negatively impact a dog’s stool quality. To keep things moving in the right direction, many vets recommend Purina Pro Plan FortiFlora, which supports intestinal balance with a single-strain probiotic.

Its powder form is easy to administer, dissolving into wet food without a trace. Most pet owners report that animals enjoy the liver flavor, though some say the serving size may be too much for smaller dogs, even if spread over two feedings. While it may not be a solution for pets with serious digestive issues (see your vet to rule out worms and other potential causes), many dogs experience relief and healthier bowel movements with this added to their routine.

A bottle of CBD for dog, its dropper and its box.
Cornbread

Pros:

  • GMP-certified facilities.
  • Reduces anxiety and aids mobility.
  • Made with USDA organic ingredients.

Cons:

  • Only available in one dose.

Made from Kentucky-grown organic hemp, this full-spectrum CBD offers natural stress relief for dogs, as well as cats. Containing 33 milligrams of hemp flower, dogs literally lap up this liquid formulated in a delicious vegan corndog flavor. While it’s also a great option for dogs with mobility issues, many pet owners like to give it to their fur babies before fireworks or travel. “We use this during the summer months,” one pet owner wrote in their review. “A lot of fireworks, even on July 5th, have my German shepherds jumping and hearts pounding through their chests. [This] keeps them calm enough but not knocked out.”

A bottle of Omega-3 Pet
Amazon

Pros:

  • Easy to administer.
  • Also supports joint health.
  • No artificial flavors or dyes.

Cons:

  • Does not include a dropper.

Pet experts often recommend Omega-3s for dogs with itchy and inflamed skin. Nordic Naturals Omega-3 is high quality, rich in EPA and DHA, and promotes a healthier inflammatory response. It’s simple, effective and can even help improve the look of your pet’s coat. Highly rated by pet owners who purchased the supplement through Amazon, this fish oil supplement for dogs has been called everything from “magic in a bottle” to simply “magic” for easing allergy symptoms.

A bottle of pet chews from Greenies
Chewy

Pros:

  • NASC Certified.
  • Includes vitamin C for a dose of antioxidants.
  • Tub container helps keep chews fresh.

Cons:

  • Dogs under 25 pounds need to have chews torn in half.

If you’re looking for a simple supplement to support nutritional gaps and overall health, this multi-vitamin supplement from Greenies is a great option. It has a variety of actives, including glucosamine for joint health, omega-3 fatty acids and L-carnitine, all of which work together to help your dog feel its best. The chewy texture and chicken flavor make them think they’re enjoying a treat, plus the formula has a yeast culture to promote better digestive health. Highly rated by customers on Chewy, it earns high marks for effectiveness, long-term benefits and ease of use.

FAQ

What supplements should all dogs take?

While a whole diet should provide adequate nutrients for your pet, that doesn’t always happen. Vet recommendations will vary depending on your dog’s unique needs, but the supplements most commonly recommended are as follows:

  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids (EPA & DHA): To support a healthy coat and reduce inflammation.
  • Probiotics & Prebiotics: For a healthy microbiome and digestive tract.
  • Joint Supplements: Search out supplements with MSM, Glucosamine and Chondroitin, which have been shown to promote muscle recovery, cartilage and bone health.

What ingredients should I avoid in dog supplements?

When selecting a dog supplement, avoid known toxins and unnecessary preservatives. Things to watch for include:

  • Artificial dyes: Color dyes (think Red #40, Yellow #5) are for superficial purposes and may trigger an allergic reaction in your pet.
  • BHA and BHT: Shown to have negative effects in animals.
  • Garlic and Onion: Known to be harmful to dogs, similar to chocolate.

Do vets recommend supplements for dogs?

Vets don’t typically recommend supplements if your dog is eating a whole and balanced diet. However, if it’s experiencing certain health conditions, such as dry skin or arthritis, a supplement may be recommended. If you’re concerned about the health of your pet, it’s important to take them to a medical professional instead of trying to treat the problem yourself. While it may seem cost-effective in the short term, there could be underlying issues that need to be addressed.

Cape Verde’s 40-year-old goalie Vozinha becomes World Cup sensation

Cape Verde’s historic World Cup draw against Spain has turned its 40-year-old goalkeeper into one of the early breakout stories of the tournament.

Josimar José Évora Dias, known as Vozinha, produced a standout performance Monday as Cape Verde held Spain to a stunning 0-0 draw in its World Cup opener, recording seven saves.

For a nation appearing at the tournament for the first time, a point against one of world soccer’s biggest names was a landmark result.

For Vozinha, it also brought an extraordinary surge in attention.

The veteran keeper’s Instagram following climbed from roughly 46,000 before kickoff to roughly 2.4 million as of this writing, turning him from a respected international veteran into one of the tournament’s most talked-about players.

“I worked all my life for this, for this moment, for this dream,” Vozinha told Fox after the game. “A lot of generations in the past was dreaming for this.’

The rise fits into a wider World Cup trend in which lesser-known players have suddenly found themselves pushed into the spotlight through social media.

The Post previously reported on NYCFC defender Kai Trewin going viral before the tournament, while New Zealand defender Tim Payne also saw his following explode after an online push from fans.

Vozinha’s surge, though, came directly off the back of a result that will mean far more than a few extra followers.

Spain entered the match expected to start its campaign with a win, but Cape Verde frustrated the European powerhouse throughout the game. The tournament debutants stayed organized, absorbed pressure and relied on their veteran goalkeeper to help see them through.

Vozinha plays his club soccer for Chaves in Portugal and has been part of Cape Verde’s national team setup for years. But Monday gave him a level of global recognition few would have expected before kickoff.

The final whistle gave Cape Verde its first World Cup point and one of the most significant results in the country’s soccer history.

For Spain, it was a frustrating start to Group H.

For Cape Verde, it was proof that it could compete on the biggest stage.

And for Vozinha, it was the performance that turned a 40-year-old goalkeeper into a viral sensation.

Sirens’ Casey O’Brien up for PWHL Rookie of the Year, has bigger goals

Sirens forward Casey O’Brien had a tough start to her PWHL career. She felt like her game was misunderstood.

The 2025 No. 3 overall pick, coming off a women’s college player of the year campaign at powerhouse Wisconsin, viewed herself primarily as a playmaker, someone whose vision and passing ability created offense for her teammates.

But coach Greg Fargo and his assistant Josh Sciba told her they wanted her to hold the puck more and look to create for herself.

O’Brien was goalless as the calendar neared the end of 2025. She was frustrated. Her teammate Kristýna Kaltounková, the 2025 No. 1 overall pick, joined the choir in encouraging her to shoot the puck.

With the Sirens playing in Dallas for a PWHL Takeover Tour stop on Dec. 28, an annoyed O’Brien decided she had enough.

She tried to make a play on the puck, but was unsuccessful. Kaltounková told her not to get discouraged.

Then, on her next shift, O’Brien scored her first PWHL goal. She went on to light the lamp two more times that day for her first hat trick.

Each time she skated back to the bench, Kaltounková greeted her with a smirk and an “I told you so.”

That game was a tipping point for O’Brien. Her trust in the coaching staff had been cemented. Her confidence soared.

She went on to lead all PWHL rookies with 22 points (seven goals and 15 assists). She finished second only to Sarah Fillier on the Sirens in points.

O’Brien found out last month that she was a finalist for Rookie of the Year and will learn at the PWHL awards show Tuesday whether she beat out Montréal defender Nicole Gosling and Boston defender Haley Winn for the award.

For most players, being named a finalist for Rookie of the Year would be a season-defining achievement, a way to qualify a player’s first season as a resounding success.

For O’Brien, though, that individual recognition doesn’t erase the disappointment of falling short of the playoffs.

“It’s definitely hard not to look back on the season and be disappointed by it, just because we’re not playing in the playoffs,” O’Brien told The Post last month. “That was the ultimate goal.

“My biggest expectation was I want to make playoffs. Since we didn’t achieve that goal as a team, it’s hard for me to look back on this season as a success for myself because so much of my individual markers on my success is how well the team does.”

O’Brien wants to win with the Sirens for her city.

O’Brien grew up in SoHo and spent countless hours commuting to hockey practices in New Jersey. She remembers waking up before dawn for 6 a.m. games at Chelsea Piers and idolizing the Rangers.

One of her favorite memories came at age 7, when she skated during an intermission at Madison Square Garden.

Years later, during the Sirens’ historic April home game at MSG, she stood on that same ice as a professional player.

“When they announced me, ‘Manhattan’s own, Casey O’Brien,’ I almost started crying,” she said. “I would love to go back and tell my younger self that I’d get the opportunity to play my own professional game there one day.”

O’Brien’s impressive rookie season has established her among the league’s brightest young stars. But she’s already looking ahead to what’s next.

O’Brien received a qualifying offer from the Sirens, who protected her rights in Phase 1 of the PWHL expansion process in early June.

The missed playoff opportunity still lingers. The Sirens remained in contention until the second-to-last game of the season, leaving O’Brien replaying key moments.

One game in Detroit stands out, when she failed to convert on two breakaway opportunities in a loss.

“If I score on either breakaway, maybe we win,” she said. “You look back on how one play or a couple plays could change the entire outcome of the season.”

The frustration has fueled her offseason training. O’Brien plans to focus on finishing chances, improving breakaway moves and capitalizing on rebounds around the net.

“It’s so motivating because the first thing I’m looking at now going into the offseason is what can I do to be someone who in those big moments next year [capitalizes],” O’Brien said. “I’m going to make sure that I’m converting, I’m going to make sure I’m making the play that in the moment it might not feel like it’s the season on the line. … I’m going to make sure that I’m going to be finishing my individual chances next season.”

If she accomplishes that, more individual accolades could be heading her way.

A New Jersey teacher and band director was arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a student starting when they were just 13, officials announced.

2 young men shot as Brooklyn Puerto Rican Day Parade wraps up: cops

Two young men were shot Sunday evening just as a Brooklyn Puerto Rican Day Parade came to a close, cops said.

A 19-year-old man was shot in the left arm and a 20-year-old man took a bullet to the back during a clash on 45th Street near 5th Avenue in Sunset Park just after 7 p.m., police said.

Footage obtained by News 12 showed a shooter dressed in all black opening fire while chasing a man wearing red pants down 45th Street, with the latter then falling behind a parked car.

Police haven’t confirmed a link between the shooting and the Sunset Park Puerto Rican Day Parade & Festival, which kicked off at 5 p.m. at 59th Street and 5th Avenue and ended near 43rd Street. Video taken by a bystander showed medics and police responding to the scene, with the roped-off area just steps from dozens of lingering parade-goers.

Both victims were taken to NYU Langone Brooklyn Medical Center, where they were listed in stable condition. It was not immediately clear what sparked the fight.

The two men, 19 and a 20, were shot on 45th Street near 5th Avenue in Sunset Park just after 7 p.m., steps from multiple lingering parade-goers.

Earlier Sunday, further north in the borough, Brooklyn-born Knicks point guard Jose Alvarado started his NBA Finals victory tour at the separate Knickerbocker Avenue Puerto Rican Day Parade in Bushwick with Mayor Zohran Mamdani.

“Thank you guys so much, it means the world to me. Really,” Alvarado said as he stood on a float during the neighborhood’s eighth annual parade. “I’m a kid from Brooklyn. And the Knicks party f–kin’ did it.”

The triumphant moment came just hours after the Knicks clinched their first NBA title in 53 years during Game 5 on the San Antonio Spurs’ Texas home turf.

A total of 63 people were taken into custody Saturday night and Sunday morning as some rowdy mobs among the thousands of jubilant fans in the Big Apple took their post-win celebrations way too far.

The chaos included a 17-year-old boy shot in the left foot around 2 a.m. Sunday in the heart of Times Square at 42nd Street and Broadway — roughly around the time hooligans began tearing apart and setting fire to school buses in the tourist hub, cops said.

Two teens have so far been arrested in connection to that burst of gunfire, but neither was the shooter, police said.

Carmelo Rodriguez, 18, was charged with criminal possession of a weapon and possession of a large capacity ammunition feeding device; and a 17-year-old boy was charged with criminal possession of a firearm and criminal possession of a weapon in a restricted location, authorities said.
