UFC ‘Freedom 250’ card draws thousands to DC on Trump’s 80th birthday

WASHINGTON — Thousands of UFC fans, liberal protesters and supporters of President Trump descended on the White House Sunday evening as the commander in chief prepared to celebrate his 80th birthday with a seven-fight card on the South Lawn.

Trump and about 4,000 ticketed guests have reserved seats in the custom-made “Claw” — a steel lighting, camera and tarp overhang that dwarfs the adjacent executive mansion — while up to 120,000 ticketed guests will be able to watch the contests on the Ellipse just to the south.

Mixed martial arts fans rushed toward checkpoints to enter the watch party while chanting “U-S-A! U-S-A!” ahead of the first bout at 8 p.m. — while protesters manned port-a-potties and invited passersby to wish the president a “crappy birthday.”

While a federal judge cleared the fights to go ahead by dismissing a last-ditch lawsuit Friday afternoon, Mother Nature could still throw a wrench in proceedings, with showers and thunderstorms forecast across the national capital region during the evening.

The spectacle, dubbed UFC Freedom 250 in a nod to the upcoming 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Indpendence, was available to stream on Paramount+ — but that wasn’t enough for many hardcore fans.

“We left at like 2:00 in the morning. None of us could sleep, we were so buzzed about this,” said Kellen Drury, 27, of Altoona, Pa., who arrived in DC with three friends despite not being able to score tickets to either the watch party or main event.

“It was still worth the trip just to be here. It’s like being outside the Super Bowl,” Drury told The Post.

“People are gonna bitch and moan about the cost, they’re gonna call it tacky, they’re gonna speak out against the brutality of the fighting itself. But even the haters are gonna watch it because that’s what Donald Trump’s all about, making it too hard to look away.”

“I tried to get my wife to come with me, but she had no interest in spending the weekend with UFC fans, and no interest in being around political hotheads on the right or the left,” said UFC fan Darius Boone, 43, of Prince George’s County, Md.

“I’m just here because I’m a fan and nothing like this has ever been done before,” Boone added. “Plus, it’s celebratory. I mean, come on, we’re celebrating a major milestone in the history of our country.

“Really, what’s more American than a $60 million claw on the White House lawn?”

“How many times do you get a chance to see something that’s never been done before, especially something so ridiculous?” agreed Nolan Haugen, 34, of Fargo, ND. “It’s like bringing Las Vegas to DC!”

“Of course I had to see it — just to say I was here,” he added. “I’m not even that big a fan of the UFC, although I’ll admit I’m a fan of the president. Happy birthday President Trump!”

DC local Nadia Rahman, 36, slammed the event as “completely tasteless.”

“It is historic, in its own way, because nothing else Trump has done in either term quite encapsulates who he is in one swoop. It’s strangely comical, except nothing about what I’m seeing is the least bit funny. It’s just like Trump’s ballroom,” she said.

The National Park Service said in a court filing Tuesday that the UFC and its sponsors had spent “well over $60 million and tens of thousands of hours of labor” on the event. The NPS was responding to a lawsuit from the liberal Public Integrity Project, which alleged the fights amounted to a “corrupt use of our most sacred national monuments for private gain.”

Mark Shapiro, president and chief operating officer of UFC parent company TKO, told The Hollywood Reporter earlier this month that “we will not be making money on America’s 250th anniversary. This is an investment for the long term. This is about earned media.”

“We see this once-in-a-lifetime stage as a strategic investment to drive subscriber acquisition at Paramount+, massive audience sampling for the UFC overall and Super Bowl-like earned media across the globe.”

Aldon Smith admitted he ‘had better days’ in tragic final interview before death

Aldon Smith’s appearance on celebrity barber Tee Maultsby’s YouTube channel days before his tragic death Saturday is taking on new significance, as the former 49ers star took on a reflective tone and stated he’s “had better days.”

Smith, 36, was found slumped over in a friend’s car on Saturday, and was pronounced dead at Good Samaritan Hospital in San Jose an hour later.

Earlier this month, the former NFL defender had been on “Laced Up,” an interview series where Maultsby interviews guests while giving them a haircut, and seemed to indicate that he was dealing with something, but didn’t go into much detail.

“I’ve definitely had better days,” he said at the start of the show. “It’s along the lines of something I think I’ve been dealing with my whole life, and I’m just struggling with accepting how it’s playing out right now. That sounds like a bunch of gibberish.”

Smith did try to stear the conversation in a more positive direction, telling Maultsby that he’s “grateful” and “in a place of gratitude.”

“It’s been a tough week. It’s been rewarding, and it’s starting to pay. Things are starting to happen,” he said.

Smith’s promising NFL career had been derailed by issues off the field, which included substance abuse issues and multiple arrests.

He played six seasons in the NFL and was suspended for multiple seasons for various reasons.

Smith was released by San Francisco after the 2014 season following several DUI arrests. He was also banned for nine games that season for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy.

He played nine games for the Raiders in 2015 and then, following several suspensions, returned to the field in 2020, starting all 16 games for the Cowboys.

Smith had 33.5 sacks during his first two seasons in the NFL.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Smith had been delivering pizzas to a homeless charity with a friend prior to his passing.

Kamala Harris briefly reemerges from political wilderness at notorious LA gay bar The Abbey

Kamala Harris made a rare public appearance Saturday night, surprising patrons at a famed West Hollywood LGBTQ hotspot as she continues to keep a relatively low political profile.

The former vice president and her husband, Doug Emhoff, stopped by The Abbey, where they were greeted by cheers and a crowd eager to snap photos with the former vice president.

The visit caught many guests off guard after an announcement was made around 6:30 p.m. that Harris and Emhoff were inside the packed venue.

Videos shared online showed patrons applauding and reaching out to shake Harris’ hand as she walked through the restaurant. At one point, she could be heard wishing the crowd a cheerful “Happy Pride!”

The appearance marked one of Harris’ most visible outings in recent months as speculation continues over her political future following her defeat in the 2024 presidential election.

Staff at the venue reportedly received little advance notice that the high-profile couple would be stopping by, with employees learning of the visit shortly before their shifts began.

The Abbey has long been one of Southern California’s best-known LGBTQ destinations.

Founded in 1991 as a modest coffee house, the establishment has since grown into a sprawling bar, restaurant and nightclub that regularly draws celebrities, politicians and tourists alike.

But it has drawn increased scrutiny in recent years after reports of a swathe of drink spiking cases came to light, KTLA reports.

Harris has been a longtime supporter of LGBTQ rights and has frequently appeared at Pride celebrations throughout her political career, including during her years as a California senator, vice president and presidential candidate.

Saturday’s outing came as Pride Month festivities were taking place across Los Angeles and the nation, drawing thousands of revelers to parades, festivals and community events celebrating LGBTQ culture and activism.

While Harris has largely stayed out of the political spotlight in recent months, her surprise appearance at the iconic West Hollywood venue quickly generated buzz online — and gave patrons an unexpected brush with one of the Democratic Party’s biggest names.

Trump says he’ll refuse FISA extension without SAVE America Act tacked on

President Trump declared Sunday that he will back an extension of the now-lapsed Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) warrantless spy power unless the SAVE America Act is attached.

The SAVE America Act includes a proof of citizenship requirement to vote and a slew of other conservative wish-list items.

Democrats have been blocking an extension of FISA Section 702, which lapsed on Friday, over concerns about Trump tapping Bill Pulte as acting National Director of Intelligence to succeed Tulsi Gabbard.

“A few Dumocrats are against FISA, with or without Bill Pulte going to DNI, as Acting,” Trump grumbled on Truth Social. “What kind of a deal is that.”

“Besides, I’m against FISA if it doesn’t come with The Save America Act (Full version!) firmly attached to it.”

Much to Trump’s chagrin, Republicans have been unable to get the Save America Act through the Senate due to the 60-vote filibuster. He’s pressured the GOP to nuke the filibuster, but has lacked the support for that.

Democrats are universally opposed to the SAVE America Act and have been reluctant to extend FISA Section 702 in the first place.

FISA Section 702 is the controversial authority that lets Uncle Sam tap into the electronic communications of foreigners without a warrant. Top intelligence honchos have long insisted that it is critical to US national security.

In April, Congress was close to a deal to extend the US surveillance powers, but that collapsed due to differences between the House and Senate over multiple provisions, including a Central Bank Digital Currency ban.

Instead, Congress agreed to a 45-day FISA extension to buy time to sort through those differences.

But Trump’s selection of Pulte to serve as acting DNI has roiled Democrats.

Pulte, the director of US Federal Housing, has made a name for himself by making criminal referrals against several of Trump’s foes over mortgage-related issues.

He has targeted key figures such as Sen. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), New York Attorney General Letitia James (D), Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook, and more.

Democrats have argued that he lacks experience to coordinate intelligence gathering and raised concerns that he may weaponize the process against Trump’s enemies. A group of Republicans has also raised concerns about Pulte.

Top Democrats have conditioned an extension of FISA Section 702 on not having Pulte serve in the acting DNI role.

Trump suggested that Pulte would only have the post for a short period of time and would probe “rigged elections,” something that exacerbated Dem concerns about the intelligence community getting weaponized ahead of the midterms.

Last week, Trump announced that he will tap Jay Clayton, who is currently the US Attorney for the Southern District of New York, to serve as DNI. But he still wants Pulte to briefly have the role in an acting capacity.

“We will get Clayton, I hope, confirmed as quickly as possible. We will then move very quickly to get FISA reauthorized,” Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.), the top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, told CBS News’ “Face the Nation.”

Justin Trudeau uses Katy Perry excuse for watching USMNT over Canada at World Cup

You can’t spell USA without “US.”

Former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau drew plenty of criticism on Friday when he skipped Canada’s opening World Cup match in Toronto in favor of watching the USA face Paraguay in Los Angeles.

Trudeau’s girlfriend, pop star Katy Perry, performed at the tournament’s opening ceremony at SoFi Stadium, and he explained it was his duty to support her in person.

“Sometimes supportive boyfriend duties call,” he wrote on X. “But you know who I’m rooting for to take the Cup.”

While Trudeau was criticized by some for not attending Canada’s first World Cup game on home soil, he saw the better contest in reality.

The USMNT were tremendous as they defeated Paraguay 4-1, with Mauricio Pochettino’s team producing a memorable, free-flowing performance.

Folarin Balogun scored a brace in the contest and Gio Reyna added a late punctuation mark after Paraguay’s Damián Bobadilla opened the scoring for the USA with an own goal.

Canada, meanwhile, dominated Bosnia for long stretches but were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw after Cyle Larin scored the tying goal off the bench.

Trudeau served as the Prime Minister of Canada from 2015 to 2025 before he resigned from the position.

He started dating Perry during the summer last year.

Trudeau will have at least two more chances to watch Canada in the World Cup if he chooses, as the Maple Leafs will be facing both Qatar and Switzerland in Vancouver.

Logan Webb, Matt Chapman power Giants to victory in series finale against Cubs

SAN FRANCISCO — Two bloops, a bunt and a blast from Matt Chapman produced more runs in the fifth inning Sunday afternoon than the Giants had scored in their previous two games.

That was all the Giants needed behind Logan Webb, who continued to dazzle in his fourth start back from a bout with bursitis in his push-off knee, to beat the Cubs, 5-1.

Webb has allowed two earned runs over 27 ⅓ innings since returning from the injured list and none to the Cubs on Sunday over eight innings, scattering six hits while striking out five.

Manager Tony Vitello went to the mound after an error allowed the Cubs to get on the board and left two runners on with two outs in the eighth and Webb’s pitch count over 100.

It turned into a quick visit: Webb remained in the game.

Moments later, his mouth was agape with both arms raised in the air.

Vitello’s decision to stick with Webb, a reversal from his previous start, almost immediately backfired when the very next batter, Michael Busch, lined his 106th pitch of the afternoon into the right field corner. It appeared destined to drive in two more runs.

But Jung Hoo Lee gave chase and tracked the ball down before crashing into the wall, leaving Webb amazed and the 40,000-plus on hand chanting Lee’s name.

The catch preserved the lead that Lee helped build in the fifth.

After having his 18-game streak broken Friday, Lee was back in the hit column with a 2-for-4 effort, including a broken-bat bloop single to begin the fifth. Daniel Susac bunted him over to second, where he was in position to score when Drew Gilbert, the No. 9 hitter, found more open territory with a shallow flare down the left-field line.

That was enough to open a 1-0 lead, and Chapman quickly made it 3-0 with a line drive over the center field wall for his seventh homer of the season — and sixth this month.

Looking the part of a leadoff hitter, Chapman drew his first of two walks and scored his second run of the game on a single from Bryce Eldridge in the seventh to make it 4-0.

It was Chapman’s first time hitting leadoff in three seasons with the Giants and only the third time he had batted first in 1,221 games at the big-league level.

Vitello had tried Luis Arraez in the top spot with Eldridge batting second the past two days but shifted each player down a slot with Chapman occupying the top of the order.

Something about this configuration worked: It produced more than one run for the first time since Wednesday. The Giants had been held to one run in their two losses to begin the series.

What it means

Rather than opt for a traditional leadoff hitter, Vitello has tried to use the top spot of the lineup to maximize the number of at bats for their hottest hitter.

For a while, that was Casey Schmitt, who’s found himself in a bit of a slump (5-for-34) and never quite profiled as a leadoff man with his aggressive approach.

Lately, it’s been Chapman.

Who’s hot

Dating back to May 17, Chapman is batting .344 (31-for-90). His home run was his 14th extra-base hit in that span. His two RBIs give him 24 in 26 games, and he’s scored 19 runs.

Who’s not

The Giants are still waiting for all their big three infielders to get hot at the same time.

As Chapman has heated up, the Giants have gotten little from Rafael Devers or Willy Adames, who combined to go 5-for-43 (.116) over the course of the six-game home stand.

Up next

The Giants board a charter flight to Atlanta, where they have the day off Monday before beginning a six-game road trip with three against the NL East-leading Braves.

Adrian Houser, Robbie Ray and Landen Roupp are lined up to start the first series of the trip.

WFAN’s Joe Benigno rejoices in Knicks’ championship win

Saturday’s Game 5 victory that sealed the first Knicks championship since 1973 was an emotional moment for fans everywhere, many of whom have been waiting their entire lives for a championship.

On Sunday morning, Joe Benigno joined WFAN to share a message to Knicks fans who have been waiting patiently for this moment for many years.

“All the pain, all the disasters. Oh my God, all the ghosts are buried now. The dragon has been slain. It’s unbelievable,” he said. “All of that, all the pain, all the suffering, all the aggravation. It’s gone. It’s over. We are world freaking champions.”

Benigno joined WFAN to share a message to Knicks fans who have been waiting for this moment.

Benigno, a longtime Knicks fan, is referring to the years where the team was at the bottom of the barrel.

Since the arrival of now-captain Jalen Brunson in 2022, however, the team has had a magical turnaround from irrelevancy to playoff contenders the past four seasons.

Beyond the historic finals win that brought the Knicks their third championship in franchise history, the team had an incredibly dominant playoffs. They went 16-3 and won their last nine road games in a row.

Their 13 consecutive wins, stretching across sweeps of the 76ers and Cavaliers and into the finals against the Spurs, is the second longest winning streak in the history of the NBA playoffs.

In the finals, the Knicks overcame double-digit deficits in each of the five games, winning every one outside of the Spurs’ Game 3 victory.

Benigno’s podcast, appropriately titled “Oh the Pain,” has been a succinct description of his experience rooting for his New York sports teams over the years.

Oh the pain no more for the Knicks.
