Community builds Little Manila Park from vacant lot in NYC

A brand-new park was born over the weekend in one of the city’s most barren neighborhoods thanks to a determined community that refused to quit.

Woodsiders paid more than $75,000 out of their own pockets and spent countless hours building Little Manila Park in Queens from the ground up to honor local healthcare workers who risked their lives during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“This is a product of ‘bayanihan,’ ” said Dori Gamboa, who with her husband Noel made the dream of the park a reality.

Little Manila Park was previously a vacant lot owned by the state Department of Transportation. Stefano Giovannini

The Filipino word “means a lot of love, helping out, hospitality, all for free. It’s a community. It’s a labor of love,” she said.

“When you translate it to English, the root word is ‘hero.’ ”

The parkspace was built from a trash- and foliage-filled lot wedged between 70th Avenue, 41st Street and the roaring Brooklyn-Queens Expressway that had sat unused for decades.

Woodside has one of the smallest amounts of green space throughout the entire five boroughs — with just about 2 square feet per capita of parks in the neighborhood.

The lot was vacant for as long as four decades. Noel Gamboa

There have been numerous attempts over the years to transform the state Department of Transportation-owned eyesore into a park, but each buckled under the long bureaucratic process — until the Gamboas stepped up to the plate in 2022.

The couple said they were inspired to act after the City Council that summer co-named Roosevelt Avenue as “Little Manila Avenue” to honor the hundreds of Filipino community members and healthcare workers who risked their lives to serve the neighboring Elmhurst Hospital, the “epicenter” of the city’s cases during COVID.

“There were a lot of nurses and health-care workers and food-service preparers who refused to work because obviously because of the fear of death,” said Noel, who was raised in Manila.

The community donated $75,000 for the project. Noel Gamboa

“But not these people whom we are dedicating the park to.

“Filipino Americans, we have this tradition that, you know, we’re, you know, we’d like to be known as the very good caregivers. … We just want their story to be told because the ratio of deaths between these Filipino Americans and the rest of the world, it was very disproportionate.”

Noel, an architect, struck a deal with the state DOT to lease the property for just $1 per year under the condition that he share access to the community for free.

But he and his wife were left on their own to build the park itself.

The pair and other volunteers then spent two years applying for grants to pay for the benches, awnings, tools and other physical aspects of the park — but none were ever approved.

Noel and Dori Gamboa, along with Pastor Joseph Mantovani, brought the dream of the park to a reality. Stefano Giovannini

Instead, the community stepped up — with neighbors and friends donating more than $75,000 for the cause.

Volunteers also spent countless hours clearing the brush and trash that had accumulated in the space over four decades and transforming it.

“It’s amazing how many partnerships and relationships can develop when you have one project and people, all these different skills and connections and networks, and whether it’s elected officials or churches or community groups or people who live in the neighborhood who have something to contribute to this kind of project,” said Pastor Joseph Mantovani, who was one of the main organizers of the park.

Little Manila Park had been quietly open to the public for several weeks but was officially christened Saturday by Mantovani, a local Muslim group, and a dance blessing by the Cordilleran, a group of Filipinos who hail from the mountains.

Fitness classes such as yoga will take place throughout the summer, and the Gamboas hope to schedule one big party per month for the community.

GOP rep calls Texas Dem Talarico ‘barely straight version of Pete Buttigieg,’ gets reminded of ‘very beautiful’ vegan girlfriend

Freshman Rep. Brandon Gill (R-Texas) was reminded of Texas Democrat James Talarico’s “very beautiful” vegan girlfriend after he needled the Senate hopeful as a “barely straight version of Pete Buttigieg.”

Gill, who spoke from the Texas GOP convention, tore into Talarico for not being representative of the Lone Star State’s values.

“I wouldn’t even say that this is Beto O’Rourke 2.0 because this is a much more effeminate version of Beto O’Rourke,” Gill told Fox News over the weekend. “I think of James Talarico as a barely straight version of Pete Buttigieg.

“People in Washington love him, but he doesn’t work with the rest of the country.”

Just as the interview wrapped up, host Kayleigh McEnany noted that Talarico has a “longtime girlfriend and she’s very beautiful.”

Brandon Gill poked at James Talarico’s masculinity during an interview on Fox News. FOX News

Last month, The Post reported on Talarico’s girlfriend, a political lobbyist who previously served as his chief of staff.

Despite his flame’s committed vegan diet, Talarico has worked to prove to the Lone Star State public that he’s a barbecue-eating Texan as he battles against state Attorney General Ken Paxton for Senate.

Like O’Rourke and former Rep. Colin Allred (D-Texas), Talarico has garnered a lot of hype from beltway Democrats who think he may be able to fulfill their longtime dream of winning statewide in Texas as a Democrat.

Democrats have pointed to Paxton’s scandal-scarred past and the tight polling between the two as evidence that he could pull it off.

Republicans have worked to cast Talarico as excessively woke and out of touch with everyday Texans.

“This is somebody who has had the most weird, absolutely far-left views that he’s now trying to run away from,” Gill argued.

“But you can’t go around talking about transing kids or making blasphemous comments about how God is nonbinary or that there are six sexes and expect Texas voters to forget.”

Talarico has a 0.6 percentage point polling edge over Paxton in the latest RealClearPolitics polling aggregate.

Newlyweds Dua Lipa and Callum Turner get handsy on romantic honeymoon in Italy

Dua Lipa and Callum Turner are still “Levitating” on cloud nine after their romantic Italian wedding.

The newlyweds were photographed packing on the PDA while celebrating their honeymoon in Italy Friday.

Photos showed Turner, 36, couldn’t seem to keep his hands to himself during their ocean excursion off the Amalfi coast. At one point, he was snapped grabbing a handful of his wife’s bum as they locked lips in the water.

Lipa, 30, who was scantily clad in a thong bikini and matching top, seemed to keep gravitating toward her man as they lounged on a pink and white floaty.

When they finally made their way out of the water, they snuggled up closely together on a lounge chair.

The couple arrived at the luxury San Domenico Palace hotel in Taormina on Monday after they tied the knot in a gorgeous Italian ceremony in front of their family and friends June 6.

Per the Sun, the bride used a local florist for her bridal bouquet, made up of peonies, lily-of-the-valley and hyacinths.

After the outdoor ceremony, the lovebirds celebrated their nuptials ceremony on the dance floor at Villa Valguarnera in Palermo, where they held their reception, reports Vanity Fair.

Highlights from the night included an Italian dinner of panelle, crocché, anelletti alla Norma, cannoli, and cassate prepared by Michelin chef Tony Lo Coco and a special performance by Elton John, who performed “Your Song” for the happy couple. The night was punctuated with a fireworks display.

Mark Ronson, Grace Gummer, Joe Alwyn, Charli XCX, George Daniel and Troye Sivan were among the famous guests in attendance to witness the couple’s love story.

While it was a quiet ceremony, the event drew public attention as many couldn’t stop talking about Lipa’s jaw-dropping wedding look.

Pulling inspiration from Mick Jagger’s ex-wife Bianca, she wore a custom Schiaparelli Haute Couture ivory blazer featuring a curved hem and decorated with gold bijoux buttons featuring surrealist motifs and a matching asymmetric skirt with a blush pink bustier trimmed in white lace.

Hurricanes vs. Golden Knights prediction: Stanley Cup Game 6 odds, picks, best bets

Lord Stanley will be in the building on Sunday night as the Carolina Hurricanes try to close out the Vegas Golden Knights in six games.

The Hurricanes have taken control of the Stanley Cup Final with a pair of wins, including a comprehensive effort in Game 5 on Thursday evening.

The Knights have plenty of questions to answer after dropping two in a row, but the biggest will be in goal. Carter Hart has not been up to snuff for Vegas in the Stanley Cup Final, and John Tortorella could turn to Adin Hill for Sunday evening.

Hurricanes vs. Golden Knights odds, predictions

Goaltending aside, the Golden Knights need a lot more from several players if they’re going to get this series back to Carolina for a Game 7.

Alexander Nikishin of the Carolina Hurricanes and Keegan Kolesar of the Vegas Golden Knights face each other on the ice.

Jack Eichel is playing reasonably well, and he does so much in his own zone, but he’s scored two goals in the entire postseason and has yet to really take over a game in this series. Carolina’s swarming defense has a lot to do with Eichel’s lack of scoring, but he’s only got five shots on goal (not including hitting the crossbar) in his last four games.

John Tortorella will need to do whatever he can to get Eichel into situations where he can dominate. I expect Eichel to play close to 30 minutes if the situation calls for it, and to recognize that he needs to be the catalyst of an offense that is struggling to keep up with Carolina.

Betting on the NHL?

I like the price on Eichel to get on the board in this contest.

As for a side, the Knights look like they have a shred of value as a slight underdog at home. Carolina’s outscored Vegas, 14-9, in the last three games, but they’ve benefited from porous goaltending and plenty of power play opportunities.

Vegas was the best defensive team in the NHL for the regular season and the first three rounds of this postseason. I’ll bet on that version of the Knights showing up in this must-win contest.

The Play: Jack Eichel to score 1+ goals (+230) | Golden Knights moneyline (-105, FanDuel)

‘Patience’ Season 2 PBS Review: Stream It Or Skip It?

In the second season of the PBS/Channel 4 mystery series Patience, police records clerk Patience Evans continues to use the skills that her neurodivergence brings to murder investigations for the York Police. But now her biggest champion on the force is gone, replaced by a detective that’s skeptical of how she can help.

PATIENCE SEASON 2: STREAM IT OR SKIP IT?

Opening Shot: A castle in the old city part of York. A woman in red walks along the old city’s walls towards the castle, where she finds a man’s body amongst a display of his photographs.

The Gist:  As we see a motorcycle ride through York, Patience Evans (Ella Maisy Purvis) contemplates the number code that was written on the label of a box her late mother wanted her to have. As Patience, who is autistic, walks through the streets with her noise-cancelling headphones on, she’s almost run over by the motorcycle.

She goes to the castle, where the body of photographer Jonathan Starper (Julian de Backer) is lying; he has a chair leg in his chest but there is little blood around him. He also has two incisions in his neck. At the crime scene, she runs into foresnsics tech Elliot Scott (Tom Lewis); she has an idea that he likes her, but has trouble reading the subtle signs of that.

When she gets back to the police station — where she works as a records clerk, but would help the detectives with investigations — she meets DI Frankie Monroe (Jessica Hynes), who was the one on the motorcycle. She’s replacing DI Bea Metcalf (Laura Fraser), who trusted Patience’s instincts; Patience and Metcalf grew close during their time working together.

The brusque Monroe doesn’t want Patience, who is not a cop, anywhere near the Starper case, despite the insights and attention to detail Patience provides. This is despite DS Jake Hunter (Nathan Welsh), who has come to trust Patience’s insights, telling Monroe that Patience helps them break cases. Monroe’s response is that just means that Hunter and his partner, DC Will Akbari (Ali Ariaie), aren’t doing their jobs.

Despite Monroe’s doubts about Patience, she continues to look into Starper’s murder, including going to the scene and finding the chair that the leg that was embedded in his chest came from, which leads her to tell Hunter and Monroe that he likely fell onto the chair, which was in a dumpster below the second story of the hollowed-out structure.

In the meantime, Patience has to figure out life without Metcalf, she turns to her neurodivergent support group for advice on how to read Elliot’s signals, and tries to figure out why and how Starper’s blood was drained after he died.

What Shows Will It Remind You Of? Like we said during its first season, Patience, created by Matt Baker and based on the French series Astrid et Raphaëlle, is a cross between The Good Doctor and Elementary.

Our Take: The reason why Patience works so well is that Patience Evans’ autism is portrayed in a much more real-life way than we’ve seen in other series, most notably the aforementioned The Good Doctor. Patience isn’t some robotic, unfeeling person. Like many on the spectrum, Patience’s autism is evident in the way she reads people, and in how she is highly organized and detail-oriented. She takes things literally and likes to follow rules. She can get overwhelmed and shut down, and she can also have panic attacks when stressed. But she is also determined to get past obstacles and difficulties.

That’s what is going to be in play in the show’s second season (it’s already been renewed for a third), because her biggest ally, Metcalf is gone and her replacement, Monroe, has doubts. She’s not at all subtle about them, either, insultingly calling Patience, “Headphones,” for instance, when Patience goes down to the morgue at the behest of the medical examiner.

Jessica Hynes’s Monroe is definitely going to bring an interesting dynamic to the series, and not just because she doesn’t think Patience should be involved in their murder investigations. Metcalf was a tough detective but open to Patience’s methods of working, and working with Patience also gave her insight into her own son’s possible neurodivergence. There are hints that Monroe has a history that’s pretty much the opposite of Metcalf’s, which is why Patience is going to have a tough time proving herself to Monroe throughout the season.

But what is the best part of Patience’s characterization is that she’s undeterred by Monroe’s insults and dismissals, just as she’s determined to start something romantic with Elliot despite a communication gap, or plugs away trying to figure out what the numbers mean on the box her mom left her. That’s the part that keeps us watching, even if the mysteries she helps solve each week are less than involving.

Patience S2

Performance Worth Watching: Ella Maisy Purvis, who herself is autistic, brings a realistic portrayl of someone with ASD as Patience. She is not playing her with a blank expression and monotone voice, which is a breath of fresh air and certainly echoes the experience of anyone who has someone in their family who is on the spectrum.

Sex And Skin: None.

Parting Shot: Patience and Elliot leave the police station together. She gives him a cactus and invites him to go with her to the library, though they can only chat on the way there, since talking isn’t allowed inside the library walls.

Sleeper Star: Nathan Welsh has a tough job as DS Jake Hunter this season, as he is basically the conduit between Patience and Monroe. We’ll likely see him holding in what he really wants to say to his new boss a lot this season.

Most Pilot-y Line: “I know Detective Metcalf thought highly of you, but I’m not her,” Monroe says to Patience. She definitely showed that throught the first case she worked, so it didn’t need to be said.

Our Call: STREAM IT. Patience continues to be an effective mystery series because of Ella Maisy Purvis’ portrayal of a person who is on the autism spectrum who puts her abilities to use in the best way she knows how.

How much extra money Knicks players make for winning NBA championship

For their first NBA championship in 53 years, the Knicks will also get a bump in their bank accounts.

Per Sportico’s Kurt Badenhausen, each player on the Knicks will earn an additional approximately $770,000 for winning the title.

The team share for winning the NBA Finals is $9,078,000, and this will be split amongst the team.

As Badenhausen pointed out, the added money is huge for players on the team with lower salaries. Jeremy Sochan has the lowest salary on the team of those not on two-way contracts with $806,000. Mohamed Diawara makes $1.3 million and Jose Alvarado makes $1.7 million.

The franchise will also receive $471,000 for finishing as the third seed in the Eastern Conference this season, alongside bonuses for going through the first round, the conference semifinals and the conference finals.

Players will also likely receive more money from outside the NBA playoff prize pool that is tied to their individual contracts through incentives.

The full NBA playoff pool including all teams and results is worth $35.74 million. Payouts for each team differ based on regular-season finishes and playoff results.

The San Antonio Spurs, as the Finals runner-up, will bring home an extra $3.921 million alongside their prizes from their progress through earlier playoff rounds.

There are also rewards for the best regular-season results. The team with the best record in the NBA earns $896,000, while the top record in each conference merits $784,000. The bonuses proceed down to the sixth-best record in each conference, which gets $210,000.

Of course, the biggest prize will always be the championship itself, but the money that comes with it, especially for the players earning less money, is a nice add-on too.

Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix: Lewis Hamilton’s first Ferrari win a statement to himself and the rest of F1

Hamilton’s victory, in such convincing style, has inevitably raised questions about what he and Ferrari can go on to achieve.

The team entered this year with high hopes that the new regulations for chassis and engine could give them a chance to return to the front.

So six consecutive Mercedes victories at the start of the year, and the obvious fact that Ferrari’s engine was lagging behind the best, were an unwelcome surprise.

The Ferrari car was as good as anything else in the corners – perhaps the best – but that was not enough to compete with Mercedes.

Barcelona changed all that. Ferrari introduced their second major upgrade of the year, to follow the first at the fourth race of the season in Miami.

And on a track where power is not such an important part in lap time, it made a critical difference.

Hamilton was left behind by Antonelli in Monaco a week ago, on a track where power is even less important. But this time he was the fastest driver in the race.

The win – in combination with Antonelli’s first retirement of the year – puts Hamilton 41 points adrift of the Italian, and extends his lead over Russell to nine.

And under F1’s engine rules, Ferrari have been granted two upgrades this season, Mercedes only one. The first could come, it is said, as early as the next race in Austria.

Hamilton has been seeking that elusive eighth title ever since he lost it in the controversy of Abu Dhabi 2021. To achieve it with Ferrari would be one of the biggest stories F1 has ever seen. Can he do it?

“With the way that the year started out, I have not really been thinking about it like that,” Hamilton said. “I’ve not been thinking about an eighth.

“Mercedes have come out the gates with a blistering car and blistering pace, both drivers doing such a great job. We know we have this power deficit.

“There’s going to be tracks where we go to with long, long straights where that makes it even harder.

“But we’ve got a great car at the core and if we keep adding performance and we can go through the corners quicker, maybe we can narrow that deficit down a little bit until we improve or until we close the gap on power.”

Wolff said: “I’d rather not fight with him for a title because I know what he’s capable of. If he smells blood, he goes. I’ve seen it many years where suddenly the Lewis Hamilton train started to go and then it’s very difficult to stop it.”
