Gio Reyna’s standout goal, baby announcement backs growth toward USMNT selection

IRVINE, Calif. — Gio Reyna had already gotten his moment, already produced a goal to justify Mauricio Pochettino’s enduring belief in his quality with a thunderclap of a strike from the outside of his foot that gave an exclamation mark to a 4-1 U.S. men’s national team win over Paraguay that opened the World Cup.

Nearly two hours later, asked about his celebration in the mixed zone, he added a thunderclap of a different sort.

“My wife’s pregnant, if that’s the one you’re talking about,” Reyna said.

Wait, what?

“Obviously, I’ve known for a couple months now, so I was waiting for the perfect time [to announce it],” the 23-year-old Reyna said. “This sort of felt like it. I already sent her the picture; she’s seen it too. It was a great moment for us.”

Reyna, after scoring, had covered his ears, which he declined to explain aside from saying it was an inside joke between himself and some close friends. Then he put the ball in his stomach, indicating to the world that his wife, Chloe, is expecting.

For a player who was nearly sent home from the last World Cup and whose behavior — as well as that of his parents — spiraled into arguably the biggest scandal in US Soccer’s history, the narrative of growth pairs nicely here.

Reyna has often referred to getting a dog when asked about how he’s changed. With all due respect to Melo — yes, after Carmelo Anthony — a child is a slightly bigger deal.

In any case, Reyna responded to a question that referenced 2022 on Friday night in the same way he has the last few weeks.

“That wasn’t on my mind at all,” he said. And why would it have been?

The 26-pass sequence that culminated in Reyna’s brilliant strike almost certainly will be one of the best team goals of the World Cup, punctuated by as good a finish as one could conjure up.

Again and again in the months leading up to this World Cup, Pochettino was asked why Reyna was still in the mix, despite not playing at Borussia Monchengladbach. Again and again, the manager said his individual quality was such that he had to be.

When the U.S. inevitably needs a goal late in a game at some point in this tournament, it’s hard to imagine Pochettino won’t turn to Reyna.

“I just told him he deserves it,” Christian Pulisic said. “We see stuff from him like that every day. It’s not like it’s a crazy surprise and he deserves it. It’s great to see him pull this off in a moment like this.”

His wife and parents, Reyna said, have been urging him to shoot the ball more. Maybe they have a point.

“I think I should,” Reyna said. “If it happens in the next couple games, I’ll take the same opportunity and hopefully get the same result.”

World Cup fan base fever takes over the United State

Since the World Cup kicked off on Thursday, it’s been a party in the USA.

As fans from all across the world have come to the United States to attend the World Cup, videos have continuously gone viral on social media of the fan bases celebrating the event.

In New York, fans of Team Brazil were seen taking over Times Square, just before their game against Morocco. The fans gathered in the center of Times Square and were seen waving the Brazilian flag, while breaking out into chants and song.

North of New York, Boston has been hosting Scotland for the games.

The Scotland fans might be the rowdiest fanbase the event has had so far, as they’ve had multiple videos surfaced on the internet of them taking over the city.

One of the videos that came across X showed the Scotland fans partying on a boat with the caption saying “Nobody does it like the Scots!”

Another video showed the Scotland fans sailing across the water on their way to Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, as they will play Haiti at 6:00 PM on Saturday.

On Thursday night, the Scotland fans were seen taking over the downtown streets of Boston. A video posted by the X account @VideosSuda showed a Boston police officer getting on the fun and kicking a soccer ball to himself, with the Scotland fans cheering him on.

In Mexico, fans and even the animals were getting in on the action as a video of a duck wearing a Team Mexico jersey has gone viral.

The duck was seen walking behind a mother and son, moments before Mexico defeated South Africa, 2-0.

Over in Los Angeles, fans of South Korea have been gathering all across Southern California and have been attending local watch parties.

During Thursday night’s 2-1 South Korea victory over Czechia, the Korean fans were seen banging thundersticks, waving pom poms, and leading self-orchestrated chants.

Australia vs. Turkey prediction: World Cup picks, odds, best bets

There’s a reason why Turkey is always a hipster pick when it comes to international soccer tournaments. The Crescent Eagles always have a couple of star players in their ranks, and they have a clear identity that is forged in one of the world’s great soccer cultures.

Just how far Turkey goes at the World Cup will largely rest on the shoulders of a pair of 21-year-old superstars, Arda Guler and Kenan Yildiz, but it’ll be up to the rest of the squad to do the dirty work to provide Guler and Yildiz a platform to be difference-makers.

Turkey will open its World Cup campaign as favorites to beat Australia at midnight ET on Sunday in Vancouver.

Australia vs. Turkey odds, prediction

Australia’s reputation in soccer is not too different from how the world views the country as a whole. A rugged, hard-working team that thrives playing the role of an underdog. What the Socceroos lack in talent, they try to make up for with spirit. It’s the Aussie way.

However, this iteration of the Australian Men’s National Team has a bit more pizazz than we’re used to seeing from the Land Down Under. They still have their trademark size and tenacity, but they’re bringing a couple of flashy players with them to North America.

Get the lowdown on the Best USA Sports Betting Sites and Apps

Nestory Irankunda and Mohamed Toure are not all-world talents like Guler and Yildiz, but their flash and dash allow Australia to offer something more than just physicality and doggedness as opponents. They have the potential to spread defenses and spring counters, which means that opponents can be punished for getting too aggressive against the Aussies.

Turkey isn’t the type of team that will throw caution to the wind, and they could be even more passive knowing that Australia’s best path to an upset is to absorb pressure and hit the Crescent Eagles on the counterattack.

Perhaps Guler and Yildiz can create enough scoring opportunities to open things up, but it seems likely that this will be a low-event match. That puts value on the draw.

Aldon Smith, All-Pro 49ers linebacker, dead at 36

Aldon Smith, an All-Pro linebacker who played six seasons in the NFL, died Saturday, the 49ers announced.

He was 36.

No cause of death was provided.

“We are devastated by the sudden and tragic passing of Aldon Smith,” the 49ers said in a statement. “Aldon’s undeniable talent and sheer dominance on the field were on display from the moment he joined our organization, having recorded one of the best rookie seasons the National Football League has seen. Beyond his excellence as a player, Aldon will be remembered for his infectious smile that lit up every room he walked into. Smith, the No. 7 overall draft pick out of Missouri, was one of the top defenders in the NFL, finishing second in the Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2011 and becoming an All-Pro a year later.

He was, however, suspended multiple times for off-field issues throughout his career and did not play from 2016-19.

Smith made a return in 2020, playing 16 games for the Raiders.

Mookie Betts blows Dodgers’ perfect game with eighth-inning error

Yoshinobu Yamamoto was nearing major league history on Saturday afternoon.

Mookie Betts doomed any chances of that, however.

The Dodgers shortstop booted a routine grounder in the bottom of the eighth inning against the White Sox in Chicago, ending any chance the star right-handed pitcher could achieve baseball immortality in the Los Angeles’ 7-1 win.

Already with two outs in the frame, Yamamoto induced a ground ball from Chase Meidroth. Betts shuffled to his left and got in perfect position to field it, but the grounder bounced off him and caromed toward second baseman Santiago Espinal, who bobbled the ball and dropped it without being able to make a throw.

Yamamoto got out of the rest of the inning unscathed, so a no-hitter was still intact in the ninth. But Tristan Peters ended that chance at history with a lead-off solo homer.

The Dodgers hurler, had he thrown the perfect game, would have become the 25th pitcher to do so in MLB history and the first since ex-Yankees right-hander Domingo German did so in 2023.

Instead, Yamamoto’s effort will likely become just a small footnote in baseball history in the Dodgers win at Rate Field.

For Betts, who shifted to shortstop full-time last year, it marked just his second error of the season after having seven last year.

Betts has been mired in a slump at the plate this season, but he went 3-for-5 with three runs scored on Saturday.

The 2018 American League MVP’s average (.196) and OPS (.611) still remain far below career norms.

Graham Platner once mocked teen’s suicide attempt in Reddit posts

Maine Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platner appeared to cruelly mock a teen’s suicide attempt in a newly resurfaced Reddit post.

The May 2012 Reddit thread begins with a photo of a teenage girl hanging out of an upper-story window, with a young man gripping her arms in an apparent attempt to save her, screenshots of the post showed.

“A girl at my old highschool [sic] tried jumping from a window because her cousin died the day before,” the post’s caption read. These students saved her. I have hope.”

An account belonging to the Nazi-tattoo sporting Maine Senate candidate wasn’t sympathetic.

“Someone clearly isn’t trying hard enough,” a commenter using the name P-Hustle — Platner’s screen name on the platform — wrote in response.

In another newly-unearthed Reddit post, Platner — who had an account on the messaging app Kik which featured a half-naked photo of himself — joked about expressing his gratitude for porn stars in military fashion.

“Thank you for your cervix,” he posted in 2021 in response to a user who said that adult entertainers should be thanked for their service like veterans.

Platner made the disturbing comments on Reddit. Obtained by the New York Post

“Graham Platner is clearly a person with deep and disturbing psychological issues that predate his military service and continue to this day,” Maine State House Minority Leader Billy Bob Faulkingham told The Post.

It’s not the first time Platner, 41, has faced scrutiny for his past Reddit posts.

He previously boasted of masturbating in porta-potties, praised Hamas and said a Purple Heart recipient “didn’t deserve to live.”

“I still have to jerk off every time I sit in a portashi–er….that blue water smell conditioned me,” the Democrat posted in 2017.

The post featured a girl dangling from a window.

In response to a video posted in 2014 on the Subreddit r/combatfootage showing Hamas terrorists shooting at Israeli soldiers and attempting to kidnap one as he screams for his life, Platner, using the same P-hustle acronym, wrote, “Looks like an all around well executed and successful small unit raid to me.”

He ruthlessly attacked Purple Heart recipient Pfc. Ted Daniels on a thread commenting on famous 2012 helmet cam footage of the U.S. soldier being attacked by Taliban terrorists, in a skirmish that resulted him being shot four times.

“Dumb motherf–ker didn’t deserve to live. At least his stupidity and fat a– wheezing are available for all future infantrymen to witness and hold in contempt,” Platner wrote in the thread in 2019.

Platner’s campaign has been rife with controversy stemming from his Totenkopf SS tattoo and his alleged mistreatment of women.

He has denied knowing that the tattoo was the symbol of Hitler’s paramilitary unit responsible for the Holocaust and said he only found out its significance in October 2025 while mounting his Senate bid.

An ex-girlfriend came forward with allegations Thursday that he knew what the tattoo meant well before then, but said he kept it to remind himself “the US was the evil bad guy overseas.”

Former girlfriend Lyndsey Fifield also accused Platner of being physical in their relationship, including grabbing her so hard he would leave marks and once allegedly twisting her arm behind her back.

Platner, who has previously denied the Fifield allegations, did not return The Post’s request for comment for this story.

Low fan turnout seen in FIFA World Cup matchup in Santa Clara

The color red donned across Saturday afternoon’s World Cup Group B match between Qatar and Switzerland.

Besides the shirts worn by the Swiss fans, the color spread across Levi’s Stadium due to the number of empty seats that filled the backdrop of the game.

Usually, Levi’s Stadium holds a capacity of 68,500 seats when the San Francisco 49ers are playing in it, but for the World Cup, the stadium is able to expand its seating up to 70,000 seats.

The Swiss fans proudly wore the bright red of their country, only to blend in with the empty seats of the stadium.

One of the complaints that has surrounded the World Cup this year has been the surge in ticket prices.

Before the games began, President Trump told The Post that he wouldn’t even pay for the $1,000 ticket prices that have surged across the event.

The San Francisco 49ers have received backlash in the past for not filling up their stadium during NFL games. But the fans complained that they were arriving late to games because of the traffic that builds up from the tailgaters.

But for the World Cup, Levi’s Stadium has implemented a stricter policy for tailgating at the games, which would seamlessly make it easier for fans to enter the stadium.

Recently, Levi’s Stadium was home to the Super Bowl this past February, and the stadium was packed out before the teams took the field.

Empty seats during World Cup matches have already been a problem for FIFA, who are three days into the tournament.

On Thursday, empty seats were shown across the background during the South Korea vs Czech Republic match. FIFA placed the blame on fans hanging out in the concourse area.

Howard professor blames Austin Metcalf’s father for his murder in sick Substack rant

A Howard University journalism professor blamed Austin Metcalf’s father for the teen athlete’s murder in a Substack post — callously tearing into the grief-stricken parent for not teaching his son that “black children have boundaries.”

Dr. Stacey Patton shared the disturbing piece on Wednesday, dissecting Jeff Metcalf’s emotional courtroom address to killer Karmelo Anthony, 19, after he was sentenced to 35 years behind bars.

The Texas father demanded Anthony look him in the eyes as he told the murderer he’s been robbed of a life with his son during his tear-jerking victim impact statement Tuesday.

“You failed yourself. You failed your parents. You failed society. You don’t belong in this community,” Jeff read from his notebook.

“This was never about race,” Jeff Metcaff went on, addressing arguments from pro-Anthony protesters throughout the case. “This is about right and wrong.”

But Patton said Jeff Metcalf is the one who “failed” and took despicable jabs at the dead boy’s father — accusing him of raising his son to be racist.

“You stood in that courtroom and told a black teenager he failed his parents, himself, and society. But perhaps the harder truth is that you failed your son first,” the professor wrote in the piece titled “Dear Jeff Metcalf: Your Son is Dead Because You Failed to Teach Him That Black Boys Have Boundaries.”

Patton argued that the father saying that he raised his son to be a “warrior” and “leader” was inherently racist because “those words too often mean dominance.”

The 48-year-old who holds a PhD focused on African-American studies from Rutgers University went on to say that Austin, 17, knowing how to hunt was telling of the “white masculinity” that “was being celebrated” around him.

“YOU failed to teach your boy that black children have boundaries. YOU failed [to] teach humility, restraint, or the sacred fact that another person’s body is not your jurisdiction. YOU failed to teach him that another child’s space is not a challenge to be conquered. YOU failed to teach him that ‘community’ does not mean white boys get to decide who belongs and who does not.”

Critics were aghast at Patton’s cold-hearted and calculated attention seeking.

“Dr. Patton literally turned a tragic altercation between teenagers into an ancestral tribe war,” Xaviaer DuRousseau, 29, an ex-Black Lives Matter activist turned conservative influencer, told The Post.

Here’s the latest on Karmelo Anthony’s murder conviction:

“And this tribalistic mentality has replaced accountability within the black community — a tragedy within itself that ultimately leads more teens to the fate of Karmelo.”

Patton, a self-described “experienced professor of journalism” taught at Morgan State from 2016 to 2023 and was an adjunct professor at Montclair State University from 2006 to 2011, according to her LinkedIn.

She was a senior writer and editor for the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund from 2008 to 2011.

Karmelo Anthony was convicted of murder and sentenced to 35 years in prison. Family Handout

She was a reporter for various publications, including The Baltimore Sun from 1997 to 1999 and The Washington Post from 1999 to 2000.

She also wrote several books, including a 2007 memoir called “That Mean Old Yesterday” and a 2017 book titled “Spare the Kids: Why Whupping Children Won’t Save Black America.”

Her next book, “Strung Up: How White American Learned to Lynch Black Children,” will be released in October.

The topic of race has been prominent since Austin’s April 2025 murder during a track meet at David Kuykendall Stadium in Frisco, with Anthony’s supporters claiming he was being unfairly persecuted because he is black.

Jeff Metcalf, Anthony’s attorney Mike Howard, and Howard University did not return requests for comment while Patton declined.

California dominates US cities with the highest credit card debt

Seven California cities landed on list of the top 10 with the most credit-card debt in the US, as Americans grapple with record household debt and rising delinquencies nationwide.

An analysis from WalletHub examining 182 of the nation’s largest cities ranked communities based on total and per-capita credit card debt.

Golden State cities dominated list:

  • Santa Clarita — No. 1 nationally, with average household credit card debt of $23,714 and roughly $1.8 billion in total balances. WalletHub also noted it ranks first in debt payoff rates, suggesting high balances may reflect higher spending capacity.
  • Chula Vista — No. 2, with average debt of $20,778.
  • Rancho Cucamonga — No. 5, with $19,619.
  • Fontana — No. 7, with $19,316.
  • Oxnard — No. 8, with $19,277.
  • Moreno Valley — No. 9, with $19,127.
  • Santa Ana — No. 10, with $19,094.

Pearl City, Hawaii, New York and Gilbert, Arizona rounded out the rest of list.

Nationally, Americans held $1.35 trillion in credit card debt at the end of the first quarter of 2026, or about $11,000 per household, WalletHub found.

Christopher Sadowski

That figure remains $212 billion below the inflation-adjusted peak seen during the 2008 financial crisis.

Separate data from the New York Fed showed credit card balances dipped by $25 billion to $1.25 trillion in the same period, though balances are still more than 60% higher than five years ago.

At the same time, repayment stress is rising.

The share of credit card balances at least 90 days delinquent climbed to 13.1%, up 0.4 percentage points from late 2025 and marking the highest level in 15 years.

The broader debt picture is drawing renewed political scrutiny in California.

Critics argue residents are carrying heavier financial burdens under Gov. Gavin Newsom compared with former Gov. Jerry Brown.

California Governor Gavin Newsom. David Buchan for Ca Post

Brown left office in 2019 touting a balanced budget, a multibillion-dollar surplus, and the elimination of California’s so-called “wall of debt.”

Under Newsom, critics point to rising state liabilities and the use of more than $20 billion in borrowing from internal special funds to help close budget gaps.

The Federal Reserve Bank of New York reported total US  household debt surged to an all-time high of $18.8 trillion in the first quarter, driven largely by increases in mortgage and auto loan balances.
