World Cup 2026: Bellingham, but no Guehi – England’s expected team

Indeed, if that is the case, it appears that John Stones and Ezri Konsa will start the World Cup as England’s first-choice central defensive pairing.

That would come as a shock to many given the widely held view that Marc Guehi was the team’s first-choice centre-back.

Guehi, since his move from Crystal Palace to Manchester City, was picked ahead of Stones during the final months of the season by Pep Guardiola, though the latter’s campaign was heavily disrupted by injury.

Guehi became central to England’s plans during Euro 2024 and his ascendancy at international level was expected to rise further under Tuchel.

But there is an emerging feeling that Tuchel prefers more physicality in his central defensive pairing – with Stones and Konsa bigger than Guehi.

However, heading into the game against Croatia, the England head coach will also have to consider the question of balance.

Guehi generally plays as the left-sided central defender, so with Stones and Konsa both right-footed, balance may still be an issue that Tuchel may consider heading into the Croatia contest.

On the right-side of England’s attack, Noni Madueke started ahead of Bukayo Saka on Wednesday.

Of course, a fully fit Saka would almost certainly start ahead of his Arsenal team-mate.

But Tuchel has admitted that Saka will need to be managed during the tournament as he still feels the effects of a lower leg muscular issue that prevented the attacker from playing a full part in Arsenal’s season run-in.

Indeed, there was genuine concern at the Emirates Stadium towards the back end of last season that Saka would miss the final weeks of the campaign and there remains concern at Arsenal about his fitness given he is currently not under their auspices.

There is hope, however, that Saka’s fitness is improving day-by-day here in the US.

If England were playing in the knockout stages today, there is every chance Saka could play from the start – although potentially not finish the game.

So heading into the group stages, how much protection Tuchel provides Saka will be a factor towards the team the German decides to pick.

But in Madueke, Tuchel has a player he trusts and clearly rates, should the manager decide to ease Saka into the tournament.

Victor Wembanyama makes confident claim with Spurs down 3-1 to Knicks

SAN ANTONIO — Apparently, it’s obvious to Victor Wembanyama.

He was unwavering in his confidence.

“Everybody thinks – everybody knows,” Wembanyama said after Spurs practice Friday, “that we’re gonna do it.”

He was talking about the Spurs’ locker room, not necessarily everyone on the outside watching these NBA Finals, having been asked if he and his teammates actually believe they can overturn their 3-1 series deficit.

After the Knicks’ miraculous comeback in their 107-106 Game 4 win Wednesday night at Madison Square Garden, Wembanyama said the Spurs’ collapse would either divide or unite the locker room.

Two days later, he is confident that it is the latter and that they share that common belief.

And he thinks the Spurs have moved past their historic Game 4 choke.

“We’re very confident,” Wembanyama said. “I wouldn’t say it was so hard to, like, shake it off. Harder than any other game before, by far, for sure. I mean, now we’re over it. It’s the playoffs. There’s no time to regret things for too long.”

Only one team has come back from a 3-1 deficit in Finals history – the Cavaliers in 2016.

“I feel like we’ve made history all year, and we’ve proven that with our backs against the wall that we can step up,” Stephon Castle said. “So, I don’t really expect this to be any different.”

Both Spurs coach Mitch Johnson and his players have expressed a sentiment that their team has decided all four games of this series — for better or worse.

They pointed to their double-digit leads in all four games.

It has been their own shortcomings when they have those leads, they say, not anything the Knicks have done that has dictated the end results.

That’s why they are so sure that this series is still within their control.

“I think just our confidence,” Castle said. “We’ve had a 10-plus point lead in every single game. Just trying to stay poised throughout that and try to keep our foot on the gas really. I feel like once we get those leads, we start to play a little bit different, take our foot off the gas defensively. I just feel like we have to stay aggressive but be smart through it.”

They are not looking at the totality of needing to win three straight games, though.

Their eyes are solely on Saturday’s Game 5, back home at the Frost Bank Arena.

“I feel like we need to isolate that one game and take it one game at a time,” Wembanyama said. “I think it would be a mistake to waste our energy on multiple games. It’s one game at a time.”

Dr. Neal ElAttrache: Meet the Dodgers’ physician under investigation

MLB is planning to investigate Dodgers head team physician Dr. Neal ElAttrache after a New York Times report that he supported an exemption to the usage of performance-enhancing drugs for UFC star Conor McGregor.

With more than 30 years of medical experience and having worked with some of the most prominent athletes in sports, questions have arisen: “Who is Dr. Neal ElAttrache?”

Dodgers and Rams head team physician Dr. Neal ElAttrache has treated many Southern California athletes. DR NEAL ELATTRACHE

ElAttrache has been associated with many Southern California sports franchises. He works as the head team physician for the Dodgers and Rams. He also serves as an orthopedic consultant for the Kings, Lakers and Ducks.

After receiving his medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh in 1985, ElAttrache worked as an intern at the Hospitals of the University Health Center of Pittsburgh from July 1985 through June 1986. In July 1986, he did a four-year orthopedic residency program at the University of Pittsburgh.

In July 1990, ElAttrache began a fellowship program in sports medicine at Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic in Inglewood.

Shortly after the fellowship concluded, he began working as an orthopedic consultant for the Dodgers, Kings and Lakers while also serving as the head team physician of the Rams, until the team relocated to St. Louis after the 1995 NFL season.

In 2008, ElAttrache began working as the Dodgers’ head team physician and eventually resumed his head team physician role with the Rams when they moved back to Los Angeles in 2016.

Conor McGregor has been one of ElAttrache’s patients.

After McGregor suffered a gruesome tibia and fibula fracture in July 2021 that nearly ended his UFC career, ElAttrache was the surgeon who operated on his fracture.

The Times reported that McGregor “took powerful, banned drugs” that ElAttrache prescribed to help him with the healing. The Times also reported that ElAttrache “wrote a letter supporting McGregor’s application for a special exemption that would have allowed him to use performance-enhancing drugs without facing a penalty.”

ElAttrache has been a household name in sports medicine over the last 30-plus years and has operated on some of the top athletes in sports, including Clayton Kershaw and Kobe Bryant, for whom he performed shoulder surgery; he worked on Aaron Rodgers’ torn Achilles, he performed Tommy John surgery on Shohei Ohtani in 2023 when he was a member of the Angels; and also performed knee surgery on Tom Brady.

Besides performing surgeries on professional athletes, he’s also worked with famous celebrities including Leonardo DiCaprio and Charlize Theron, who both had knee surgery.

Brave NYC boy with sickle cell disease gets heartwarming ‘VIP’ treatment at Knicks finals game

His special night was nothing but net.

A brave Manhattan boy who has “kept smiling” through years of excruciating sickle cell disease had the time of his life at Monday’s Knicks game thanks to a charity that partners with Madison Square Garden, his mom told The Post.

Marvell CharlesPierre Jr., 8,  who goes by “MJ,” scored a free ticket to Game 3 of the NBA finals Monday as part of the Garden of Dreams program — and was “hyped up” with “joy,” said his mother, Angelina Rosado.

“Knowing how much crying he’s done and how many hospitals and needles he’s endured, those moments  of joy at the game were so amazing,”  said Rosado, 33, of the Lower East Side. “He just wants to be a regular kid.”

MJ, a third grader at PS 15, got special early entrance and access to the team’s pre-game warm-up alongside celebrities in the nearly empty arena.

“He felt like VIP,” Rosado said, adding he was  also given a hip, royal blue Knicks hat.

MJ — who has spent days-long stints in emergency rooms since first being diagnosed with the painful blood disease at 1 month old  — was swept away by the excited energy of the crowd as the Knicks took on the Spurs, ultimately losing by just four points.

“To see him jumping up, screaming and cheering — those were super-happy moments,” said Rosado, who posted a heartwarming montage of the game night on Instagram. “His face was lighting up.”

“He was screaming ‘defense!’” she said. “The crowd really hyped him up.”

“It was so dope for me as a mom to see that,” she added.

People like MJ who have sickle cell disease suffer from severe pain when their mutated, crescent-shaped red blood cells clump together and block blood flow.

The blockage —known as a vaso-occlusive crisis — can flare up at unpredictable times, restricting blood flow and leading to severe inflammation and intense pain.

“It’s been an emotional roller coaster,” Rosado said of her son’s “gut wrenching” diagnosis, and first crisis at 11 months old.

“As a mom who has had to deal hospital visits and convincing him he’s gonna be fine in worst pain of his life… to see him having joy — you can’t even buy something like that,” she said.

At the game, MJ,  who’s a big Jalen Brunson fan,  grinned and flashed the player’s signature hand symbol, said Rosado, who is executive director of the domestic violence non-profit Sisters in Purple.

The duo took their seats in section 214 and were thrilled to learn Bronx-bred rapper Cardi B would perform a surprise halftime show, she said.

Garden of Dreams, non-profit charity that brings “life-changing opportunities to young people in need,” teamed up with the Make-a-Wish foundation to get MJ the coveted tickets.

The charity and its partners have given roughly 500 tickets to help kids in need attend Games 3 and 4 of the Knicks finals, according to a rep for Garden of Dreams.

It will give away 250 more if there’s a Game 6 of the NBA finals.

The charity partners with dozens of  groups such as the Children’s Aid Society, Madison Square Boys & Girls, Scan Harbor,  and New York Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital,  to give sick and underserved children tickets to events at the arena.

Airline sued for accusing dad of trafficking his own daughter

An Arkansas woman has sued Delta Airlines for $2.35 million, claiming an employee wrongly reported that her dad inappropriately touched her and sex-trafficked her on a flight with other family members when she was just 13.

The stressful incident unfolded on Dec. 18, 2019, when Madison Cupp, of Paragould, Ark., was on a flight with Endeavor Airlines — whose parent company is Delta — accompanied by her parents and her grandparents to attend her brother’s graduation from Coast Guard school in Newport News, Va.

The plane hit some turbulence as it was nearing its destination in the Old Dominion State and Cupp’s Army vet dad, Nicholas Cupp, “comforted” his scared and crying pre-teen daughter “as any good father would do,” according to court papers filed in Virginia federal court last week.

But “unbeknownst” to the Cupps, Delta employee Cheryl Thomas reported the moment to the captain, requesting that law enforcement be there when they landed and that the girl be separated from her family, according to the suit originally filed in state court in December.

The captain then contacted Delta station manager Derek Palazzone, who called the police “without making even the slightest effort to determine the truth of the matter,” the filing charges.

While the plane was still in the air, Thomas went on to claim the dad was “inappropriately” touching the daughter and “sexually abusing her” — all totally false accusations, the filing said.

Madison “was not sexually assaulted by her father; rather, she was comforted by her father at a time when she was nervous about experiencing turbulence for the first time and at a time she was literally surrounded by other family members,” the suit explained.

Armed cops boarded the plane once it landed, took Madison from her parents and interrogated her and her dad separately, the docs alleged.

Madison was “upset and scared and crying” while she was interrogated, the court papers claimed.

And the dad was embarrassingly questioned “in a public portion of the airport where members of the public witnessed” the grilling, before the officers “ultimately determined that there was no probable cause to charge or arrest” the father, the suit claimed.

After the debacle, Thomas walked right past Madison, but she didn’t apologize or even look in her direction, the filing claimed.

The father-daughter duo suffered “severe and permanent harm” with Madison experiencing “stomach aches, vomiting” and other signs of “emotional trauma.”

In fact, she went on to fear “interacting with her father in public” after the humiliating fiasco.

Madison had been an outgoing student who played basketball on a team coached by her dad. But after she became a recluse, wanted to stop going to school and quit the team.

She also “refused to show any affection to males” and was constantly in fear of her family getting taken away from her, the court documents claimed.

The Cupps allege Delta failed to properly train Thomas and Palazzone on how to accurately spot, investigate, and report actual sex trafficking.

Nicholas has been fighting his own lawsuit for years and recently Virginia’s Supreme Court ruled the airline wasn’t immune and his case could go forward, according to a report by USA Today.

Delta and Thomas didn’t immediately return a request for comment Friday. Palazzone declined to comment.

The one thing that played no role in Karmelo Anthony’s murder of Austin Metcalf

The system failed Karmelo Anthony — he stabbed someone to death and is going to jail for it.

If this doesn’t strike you as an injustice, you haven’t been paying attention to the voices defending the 19-year-old who was just sentenced to 35 years in prison for murdering another teenager at a high school track meet in Texas two years ago.

The case has garnered national attention entirely for its racial angle. Anthony is black, and his victim, Austin Metcalf, was white.

But there is no evidence that race played a role in the incident, and if both young men had been white or both black, no one would try to pile political or social meaning on top of a senseless crime

Both Anthony and Metcalf were football players who competed in track and attended different high schools.

At the meet, Anthony went inside the tent set up for Metcalf’s school. Athletes don’t ordinarily go into the tents of competing schools, and Metcalf and others asked him to leave.

He refused and told Metcalf, threateningly, “Touch me and see what happens.”

Metcalf shoved him, and Anthony responded by plunging a knife into Metcalf’s chest, killing him nearly instantly.

At the trial, Anthony’s defense tried to make a self-defense case. But Metcalf obviously didn’t represent a threat to Anthony’s life.

If Anthony had answered the shove with a shove of his own — or, better yet, simply left the tent when asked — the scuffle would have been quickly broken up, and Metcalf would be alive today and Anthony a free man.

Rather than simply admit that a black kid killed a white kid for no reason, Anthony’s defenders have reached for any reason to try to absolve him.

The rabble-rousing Democratic congresswoman from Texas, Jasmine Crockett, has said that the knife was small, so it can’t really be considered a deadly weapon — never mind that the knife did, indeed, kill Metcalf.

She’s said that Anthony only stabbed Metcalf once, which is irrelevant since it took only one thrust of the knife to kill him.

And she’s said that Anthony was justified in stabbing Metcalf because Metcalf was a large football player, but Anthony, too, was a football player, although not as big.

We’ve heard again and again that an all-white jury convicted Anthony, when there were minorities on the jury, just not black jurors.

This complaint amounts to saying that it’s unfair that Anthony was denied the possibility that a black juror might dismiss the facts of the case and deadlock the jury for racial reasons (some of Anthony’s advocates say that in future such cases prospective black jurors should be less honest about their biases so they don’t get struck during jury selection).

The celebrity rapper Cardi B has opined that black kids now need to be told not to argue with white kids because it’s too dangerous.

This, though, fails to account for the fact that Anthony, not Metcalf, did the stabbing.

Besides, if the incident had merely been an argument, it would have been of no consequence.

It was Anthony’s use of deadly force that instantly transformed it into something life-changing.

If you didn’t know anything about the case, you’d believe, listening to the pro-Anthony commentary, that he was the one killed.

His advocate, the progressive Minister Dominique Alexander, says the case shows that black lives don’t matter; this charge at least makes some intuitive sense when a black man has been shot by a cop, but to apply it to a case where a black kid stabbed a white kid is mind-bogglingly perverse.

It’d be much better if such cases were simply considered on their merits.

There is no reason to make an open-and-shut murder case into a race-based morality play, and consider the perpetrator and victim racial symbols rather than actual people, whose conduct should be judged by neutral standards.

Karmelo Anthony committed a shocking crime, and his race can’t mitigate it or free him of responsibility.

John Tortorella rips ‘stupidest question I’ve heard’ after Golden Knights lose Game 5

John Tortorella is in Stanley Cup form.

The Golden Knights coach lambasted a reporter who asked about the possibility of changing goaltenders with Las Vegas down 3-2 to the Hurricanes in the Stanley Cup Final.

“Oh, for Christ, that could be the stupidest question I heard,” the fiery Tortorella said Thursday night after a 4-2 road loss in Game 5.

The reason for the question, though, is rather obvious.

Carter Hart has become the first goalie in Stanley Cup history to let up four-plus goals in the first five games of the series — allowing exactly four in each.

The Golden Knights are out of rope with Carolina now one win from the Stanley Cup after back-to-back victories in Games 4 and 5.

One would think the idea of making a change could be tantalizing for Tortorella, given that their opponent has found success with the switch.

Hurricanes coach Rod Brind’amour pulled Frederik Anderson in the middle of Game 4 with the Hurricanes trailing 4-0. Backup Brandon Bussi held strong before giving up the game-winner in overtime.

He has since led the team to back-to-back wins.

Hart has played all 21 games this postseason for Las Vegas. He shut down one of the best offensive teams in the NHL in the Colorado Avalanche in the Western Conference finals in a shocking sweep.

Backup Aidan Hill had a somewhat uninspiring regular season with a 3.04 goals against average in 27 appearances.

For Hart, it is just his first season back after two years away due to the Canada World Juniors sexual assault case that stemmed from an incident during the 2018 World Juniors championships.

After a lengthy trial, all players were found not guilty on July 24, 2025.

Hart then signed a one-year deal with the Golden Knights.

Game 6 returns to Vegas on Sunday at 8 p.m. ET.
