1 person dead and another in critical condition after being swept into the ocean in Santa Cruz

One person is dead and another remains in critical condition after being swept into the ocean Wednesday at Bonny Doon Beach in Santa Cruz County, California.

Multiple law enforcement agencies responded to the beach to rescue the two individuals.

“Both of these patients, we believe, were originally sleeping right at the keyhole, which is an area that we’re finding catches people unaware,” Santa Cruz County Volunteer Fire Captain Kyle Breton said.

Authorities said about eight rescue swimmers entered the water to extricate the victims.

Once rescued, one individual was transported by an Almacopter 614 to Yellow Bank Beach atop the bluffs before being taken to a local hospital.

Meanwhile, the second individual was brought to Panther Beach, where they were carried in a stokes basket to an awaiting ambulance and transported to a local hospital.

“What we’re also seeing is that people go through the keyhole to get to Yellow Bank Beach, and then they get trapped on Yellow Bank Beach because of the tides,” Breton said.

Authorities said since the rescue, one of the individuals had died, while the other remains in critical condition.

According to the CALFIRE CZU San Mateo–Santa Cruz Unit, this was the fifth water rescue the agency has performed this past month along the one-mile stretch of coastline between Yellow Bank Beach and Bonny Doon Beach.

The incident comes a day after a 5-year-old girl was swept into the ocean near Laguna Beach.

Officials said that a mother and her two children were carried into the water by a powerful wave. The mother and one child were rescued by bystanders who were nearby.

The search for the missing girl began immediately afterward, but search efforts for the 5-year-old were suspended Thursday.

The dangerous water conditions are being driven by a southern swell, according to the National Weather Service.

This has triggered high surf events affecting both Orange and Los Angeles counties.

The Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office issued a warning after they said they responded to an increased number of water rescues over the past few weeks.

The NWS is warning people to be cautious, especially at south-facing beaches, as rough surf is expected through Thursday.

Hunter Biden dishes to Gavin Newsom on governor’s podcast

Hunter Biden, son of former President Joe Biden, appeared in a tell-all interview on Gov. Gavin Newsom’s podcast.

Biden spoke on a range of characters in the political world, from Tucker Carlson to President Trump.

Biden also defended Graham Platner, the Democrat nominee for a Maine senate seat, who is under fire for allegations of toxic, dishonest relationships with women and having a Nazi tattoo.

He told Newsom that few Americans would survive the “show me your phone” test and be elected to office.

“If that’s the standard by which we are going to judge people, particularly people in elected office, then I don’t think we’re going to have many people in elected office.”Biden told Newsom.

He also joked with the governor about a presidential run, telling the governor: “Here’s the deal. I’ll run, but only as your VP.”

The podcast appearance has set off some critics who poked fun at Newsom’s decision to host Biden, who’s had a controversial history.

Uber offers discount if your FIFA World Cup 2026 team is axed

Uber will not drop the ball.

The rideshare app is offering a slew of new deals for soccer fans — but one discount is sure to help with the heartbreak.

If your favorite team is knocked out of the World Cup tournament, Uber will give you a 30% discount on a future ride.

Uber has dropped a bunch of new deals and features for the World Cup Uber

To seal the deal, head to the app and click on the “choose your team” icon.

You’ll select the country you’re rooting for, click apply and hope that your team doesn’t crash out early, “so you can leave the packed bars, game-day crowds, and heartbreak behind,” according to the company.

Just note that there’s a max discount of $7 and only one rider can use the discount per drive.

Soccer fans will also spot a few other deals to catch before the whistle blows.

Stadium shuttles

Uber rolled out a new shuttle service at four US match venues — so catching the game can be a bit cheaper and easier.

The shuttles will be at host stadiums immediately after games in the big cities: New York, New Jersey, Boston, Miami and Dallas.

Another goal — no more surge pricing.

The company said upfront pricing for the shuttles will automatically be in the Uber app, with fares starting at $45 in Miami, Dallas and Boston.

New York and New Jersey will be $49. To use the new feature, click the shuttle icon in the Uber app to book early, or on matchday.

Travel Pass

Travel Pass is a $4.99 deal for commuters where folks in the US can save up to $85 for Uber and Uber Eats.

Plus, travel passes are up for grabs in Mexico for $1.99 and Canada for $3.99 and each is valid for 14 days.

Cash in on dining out

Dining during the tournament won’t break the bank.

Those who book and dine through Uber Eats Dine Out can earn 30% off — up to $35, “making it even more rewarding for fans in host cities to experience the local cuisine,” the company said.

Fans just make their reservations through Dine Out in the Uber Eats app, upload a photo of the receipt before you leave the restaurants and get your cash back.

Beat the airport maze

You may not save money with this one, but you could save time.

The brand added a new turn-by-turn in-app directions guide that guides riders from their gate to the specific Uber pickup zone, cutting down on the airport chaos.

But it’s only for customers traveling through US, Canada and Mexico host city airports.

World Cup 2026: Can Canada’s ‘best-ever team’ deliver long-awaited success?

On paper, Canada’s group is more favourable this time. They face Switzerland, Qatar and Bosnia-Herzegovina – the latter beating Italy on penalties to earn their spot.

“People are saying there is no reason Canada cannot top this group, especially after Italy choked,” says Johal. “Now maybe the Swiss are our biggest rivals.”

That confidence has not quite been matched by recent results. Canada were dumped out of the Concacaf Gold Cup by minnows Guatemala on penalties in the quarter-finals, while their friendly results have been mixed.

The March international break yielded back-to-back draws against Iceland and Tunisia in Toronto.

Goals have been at something of a premium too, with Canada failing to net in four of their last nine games. So, plenty for manager Jesse Marsch to work on if the co-hosts are to match high hopes.

While Marsch struggles to piece together a best XI, he will be hoping talisman Alphonso Davies will be available soon – despite missing their opener through injury.

A raw 21-year-old at Qatar 2022, Davies endured a mixed tournament in which he missed a penalty in Canada’s opening defeat to Belgium, before becoming the first Canadian man to score a World Cup goal, in their match against Croatia – but they lost 4-1.

Now 25, Davies is Canada’s captain and best player but has missed 15 games for Bayern Munich this season with injury.

He was absent from the March internationals with a hamstring strain, however is hoping to be fit for some of the World Cup, which would be a massive boost for his country.

“We saw Davies come back and score for Bayern, he is an integral part,” added Johal. “Davies is 100% the face of the team, it’s just we have not seen that face so often with the injuries.”

Davies, Juventus striker Jonathan David and Villarreal midfielder Tajon Buchanan form the backbone of Canada’s golden generation. If all three are fit and firing, the Canucks can compete.

Toronto and Canada midfielder Jonathan Osorio believes the growth in football’s popularity in the country has helped the quality.

He told BBC World Service: “The exposure to other leagues around the world being shown on TV here was also a factor.

“I think Canadian club teams in MLS being successful helped, and all those things helped that next generation really believe and dream big, and believe that it’s possible to one day help Canada reach a high level.

“Our grassroots began to improve. Everything began to improve as far as the sport in our country and that’s what led us to finally getting over that hump and qualifying for a World Cup.

“I think this team represents Canada more than any other national team in any sport. We really show how diverse Canada is.”

Meghan Markle wears $100K in jewelry in new As Ever wine video

Nothing pairs with rosé like $100,000 in jewels.

Meghan Markle dripped in Cartier, Lorraine Schwartz and Jennifer Meyer to promote her As Ever lifestyle brand’s wine collection in a new Instagram Reel on Thursday, layering on gold and diamonds to accent her summer whites for the garden stroll.

In the clip, posted to the brand’s account, the Duchess of Sussex, 44, walked through an estate garden with a bottle of bubbly in hand, pouring a glass of rosé and clinking glasses.

“For gathering all summer long 🍾” the caption read, highlighting the winery’s new Sauvignon Blanc, Brut and Rosé offerings.

Markle sparkled in Cartier’s Juste un Clou gold necklace with diamonds ($18,700), her go-to gold Love bracelet ($7,950) and Princess Diana’s Tank Française watch, which starts at $27,700 new — though the late royal’s version is widely considered priceless.

She also stacked on a Jennifer Meyer bezel tennis bracelet ($5,950) and her custom Lorraine Schwartz diamond pinky ring, which Page Six Style reported in 2020 was fashioned from a gift of diamonds the couple received from the Middle East. A jeweler estimated the emerald-cut sparkler to be worth around $70,000 in a 2024 InStyle interview.

All told, the accessories clock in at more than $130,000 at retail — not accounting for the Tank Française’s royal provenance.

Prince Harry is believed to have gifted his wife the yellow gold Cartier watch, which his mother wore regularly from 1996 until her death in 1997. Markle has made it a near-permanent fixture in her wardrobe since debuting it publicly in 2020.

Her outfit was considerably more understated. Markle wore white cropped trousers, a white ribbed tank and a chocolate brown suede belt, grounding the look with Veronica Beard brown suede mules.

She topped it all with her ivory Celine blazer — a piece she first pulled out for the Invictus Games in Düsseldorf in September 2023 and rewore in As Ever promo clips last month.

The mom of two has a penchant for dressing up her brand content with five-figure pieces. In that same May shoot, she paired a $62,950 Logan Hollowell diamond tennis necklace with a white T-shirt and The Row trousers.

Markle’s wine lineup has grown steadily since As Ever launched in spring 2025. Her debut rosé sold out in under an hour, and the brand has since added a 2024 Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc and a 2021 Vintage Napa Valley Brut. As Ever and Netflix parted ways on the brand earlier this year, with Markle’s rep saying the label was “ready to stand on its own.”

Christian school student breaks down as second teacher learns fate for having sex with him

A second teacher at a Georgia Christian school has been sentenced for sexually abusing the same 15-year-old boy as an older colleague had — moments after the sobbing teen had to be led from court while hyperventilating at the lasting trauma she caused.

Bonnie Elizabeth Brown, 26, was handed a 40-year sentence on Thursday, with a minimum of 15 years to be spent in prison – just weeks after another teacher, Sherri Delle Mauldin, 61, got 12 years in prison for repeatedly having sex with the same boy.

Mauldin got a lighter sentence after admitting the abuse, saving the boy the pain of a trial — which he tearfully told Brown she should have done, too, to save him much of his pain and humiliation, 11Alive reported.

Georgia teacher Bonnie Brown, 26, was sentenced to 40 years following her sex crimes trial. 11Alive

“All you had to do was admit it,” he angrily told Brown in a haunting victim statement he was too overwhelmed to complete.

Before teaching there, Brown had been a straight-A valedictorian and homecoming queen at Nathanael Greene Academy — which has now been closed for good because of the scandal of the perverted teachers.

In court, the boy — now 19 — repeatedly broke down and hyperventilated as he said Brown’s refusal to admit having sex with him left him bullied and branded a liar.

He was ultimately too distressed to complete his victim statement, which was finished by an advocate after he was led hyperventilating from the courtroom, according to 11Alive.

His harrowing attempt to address the court showed just how damaging such abuse is, Assistant District Attorney Blayne May told the outlet.

“It’s a very cathartic moment, but it brings up a lot of the trauma and I think the judge and everyone in the courtroom saw the effect that these things have,” May said.

“I think there’s a stereotype that, ‘oh it’s a student and female teacher, it’s got to be fun,’” the prosecutor said. “I think everyone saw the traumatic impact it can have on kids.”

Brown refused to address the court before she was sentenced. However, her father, Charles Gregory Brown, painted her as a victim in the abuse since being charged.

“She has been violently sick … she can’t sleep she had migraines, for fear of what could happen, fearing that she would not be believed,” he said.

“I ask for leniency for Bonnie.”

She taught at Nathanael Greene Academy in Georgia. 11Alive

May, the assistant DA, later praised the boy on “his courage for standing up, admitting and saying what happened to him” — and for the jury for letting “him have a voice.”

“The judge and jury by their verdict are sending a message; this community does not tolerate acts like that.

Brown was the first of the two teachers arrested in the scandal that led to the Christian school closing.

She was convicted on five counts of improper sexual contact by an educator.

Before sentencing Brown, Judge Stephen Bradley told the court, “We expect an individual put in certain positions to conduct themselves in a way that benefits the children in their care.”
