Gavin Newsom and Justin Trudeau spotted in animated discussion at World Cup

California Gov. Gavin Newsom and former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau were spotted deep in conversation as they took in the opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup at SoFi Stadium.

The pair’s animated discussion before the USA’s matchup against Paraguay, with photos showing Trudeau gesturing emphatically and, at one point, raising his hands in a prayer-like pose as he spoke to the California governor who is believed to be preparing for a presidential run in 2028.

Trudeau was in Los Angeles to support his popstar girlfriend Katy Perry — who performed during the World Cup opening ceremony ahead of kickoff.

But it was his courtside-style chat with Newsom that drew almost as much attention as the action on the field.

The appearance comes as Newsom continues to battle political hurdles.

The governor recently went on the offensive after reports emerged that he and wife Jennifer Siebel Newsom are the subject of a Department of Justice investigation.

In a letter to Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, Newsom blasted the probe as a politically motivated effort by the Trump administration.

The inquiry reportedly involves whistleblower allegations related to Siebel Newsom’s taxes, as well as a separate corruption probe connected to Newsom’s former chief of staff, Dana Williamson.

The Post previously revealed that the governor directed more than $4.4 million from special interests and wealthy individuals to the California Partners Project, one of Siebel Newsom’s signature initiatives.

Newsom has long been viewed as a potential Democratic contender for the White House in 2028, though he has not formally announced any plans.

Trudeau, meanwhile, has also been catching heat after opting to attend the World Cup opener in Los Angeles rather than Canada’s opening match in Toronto.

“Sometimes supportive boyfriend duties call,” Trudeau wrote on X. “But you know who I’m rooting for to take the Cup.”

Natasha Cloud isn’t dwelling on incomplete Liberty story

CHICAGO — Natasha Cloud on Wednesday set her feet and put up a 3-pointer.

She repeated the motion again and again like clockwork.

She warmed up on one side of the Wintrust Arena court while her former team, the New York Liberty, prepared for Wednesday night’s game on the other side.

Cloud has moved on from New York. Not that she necessarily had the choice.

The Liberty said they had versions of their 2026 roster that included Cloud.

But when the time came, other dominoes fell, leaving Cloud as the odd woman out.

The Liberty landed marquee free agent Satou Sabally. They also signed highly sought-after French guard Pauline Astier. When the salary cap hits for each signing came to light, it became abundantly clear that the Liberty’s books were close to the max.

Cloud remained unsigned as training camps opened across the league. To complicate matters, Cloud had switched agents three times this year, including twice in April.

Eventually, Cloud found her new home, with the Chicago Sky signing her to a one-year, $500,000 contract on May 4.

Cloud’s ending to her New York chapter feels incomplete.

The Liberty traded two first-round picks for Cloud in March 2025, just weeks after the Mercury dealt the veteran guard to the Sun as part of a four-team trade that brought Satou Sabally to Phoenix.

Cloud, a 10-year veteran and 2019 WNBA champion, helped the Liberty to a franchise-best 9-0 start. She averaged 10.1 points, 5.1 assists and 3.7 rebounds in 41 games.

Throughout last summer, Cloud expressed her love for New York, calling it home.

“I’m very happy as a New York Liberty,” the 34-year-old said July 18.

She was a fan favorite. She embodied the traits that define the city: relentlessness, ambition and adaptability. She wore her emotions on her sleeve.

But the backcourt pairing of Sabrina Ionescu and Cloud wasn’t as seamless as the Liberty had hoped. After New York’s first-round exit, Liberty general manager Jonathan Kolb said the team would reevaluate Ionescu’s role and her ideal backcourt partner.

Ultimately, the Liberty went in a direction that didn’t include Cloud. The hurt has to weigh like a bad breakup with someone you envisioned a future with.

Wednesday will be the first time Cloud faces her former team this season. It’s the third time in her career that she’s experiencing this wide range of emotions.

Cloud needed a few minutes before she met with The Post outside the Sky’s locker room pregame, her trademark smile painted across her face.

She didn’t want to get into what went down in the offseason.

“Right now, I’m just focused on getting another dub,” Cloud said. “It happens to be [against] New York, but very happy to be where my feet are. Y’all know what it is. … This business is political. Business is business.”

Cloud is averaging 9.9 points, 3.8 rebounds and 4.3 assists in 12 games with the Sky this season. She has come off the bench six times — the first time she hasn’t been a starter since 2018.

Sky coach Tyler Marsh said Cloud brings a lot to the table, including leadership, a winning mentality, a championship mindset and work ethic.

“She’s everything that you’ve heard about her over the years is what she’s brought and she comes with great communication and great energy,” Marsh said. “That presence that she brings, it can be contagious, especially for our younger players, the way that she talks and leads on both ends of the floor. So she’s been great.”

Skylar Diggins called Cloud a “vibe changer.”

“Good vibes only — just her spirit that she brings every day, always in a good mood, you know, cool with everybody,” Diggins said. “[She’s] concerned about what we can do to get better.”

Nahshon Wright ready to ‘prove’ himself with Jets

The Jets infamously had no interceptions and were last in the NFL in turnovers forced last season.

In steps Nahshon Wright.

The cornerback led the league in turnovers forced last season with the Bears and had a career-high five interceptions.

The Oregon State product attributes confidence, consistent playing time and “having a knack for the ball” as the reasons for his breakout season, all of which he expects to bring to the Jets.

Wright signed a one-year deal with $3.5 million guaranteed because he thought it was the “right situation to come here and be able to prove myself again.”

The former Cowboy said the Jets’ interception-free 2025 was not part of his decision, and the dubious record hasn’t been brought up at all in the locker room or in meetings.

Wright is one of many players brought into the new-look Jets secondary to fix that exact problem.

New York spent the No. 50 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft on 5-foot-9 cornerback D’Angelo Ponds from Indiana and brought in two veteran safeties, Minkah Fitzpatrick and Andre Cisco.

In 15 games with the Hoosiers last season, Ponds had 61 tackles, four tackles for loss, two interceptions, a forced fumble and a blocked kick.

Wright said the rookie is “super sticky in coverage,” and he has been impressed with his aggressiveness so far at minicamp.

He also said Fitzpatrick has been great with the young guys and bringing everyone in the secondary up to speed in meetings.

“[Fitzpatrick] carries himself in a way that naturally promotes leadership and guys’ respect,” Jets defensive coordinator Brian Duker said. … “He’ll continue to be a great example. He’ll continue to communicate well, and the leadership happens naturally because of who he is as a person.”

Wright and the rest of the secondary will also get help from an improved pass rush with the additions of T’Vondre Sweat, David Onyemata, David Bailey and Joseph Ossai this offseason.

“Rush and coverage are tied together,” Wright said. “When you got guys that can get up at the quarterback and you speed the quarterback up and make him uncomfortable in the pocket, they make errant throws and throws they maybe shouldn’t have made.”

Christian Pulisic’s injury status remains a USMNT mystery

IRVINE, Calif. — From no worries to day to day to there’s still time, the U.S. men’s national team messaging around Christian Pulisic’s left calf injury has gotten more pessimistic by the day.

“He’s been taking it day by day,” Antonee “Jedi” Robinson said before a third straight day of training sans Pulisic on Wednesday. “He’s not been training fully with the group yet. We’ve still got a couple of days to see where he’s at.

“Thankfully we’ve got a lot of boys on the bench who are eager and ready to get involved and helping the team, a lot of quality. It’s a long tournament. If we don’t have him back for the game, we’re gonna make sure we have him back the rest of the way because we’re gonna need him, because we’re gonna need everyone but hopefully we have everyone fit and ready to go.”

As the USMNT warmed up Wednesday, Pulisic was spotted working out in a tented gym next to the field. Minutes before reporters were kicked out of practice, he made his way to the field with a staffer and started passing a ball back and forth, still on his own. A sleeve on his injured left calf was visible.

A U.S. Soccer spokesman continued to say that Pulisic was day to day and in modified training.

It’s worth noting here that there are no injury disclosure rules at the World Cup, and no real incentive for anyone around the national team to be truthful in a situation like this.

There’s a long history of international soccer teams lying about injuries, including the USMNT, which declared striker Jozy Altidore ready to go before a 2014 Round of 16 match against Belgium, only for him to reveal after the tournament that he had a grade 2 hamstring tear.

So everything here, whether it sounds good or bad, ought to be taken with a grain of salt, and with the understanding that the intended audience is the Australian team whose preparation will be affected based on the information made available.

At minimum, though, it’s becoming hard to believe Pulisic will be available for a full 90 minutes against Australia on Friday — not least because, injury aside, he hasn’t played a whole game since March 26.

“Listen, we’re really hoping Christian’s gonna be back for the game of course,” midfielder Brenden Aaronson said. “I don’t know what’s going on in particular. We know he’s gonna give it his all to be back with the team and then be there for the game, so we’ll see. We’re really excited and we’ll see what the deal is.”

Aaronson, who didn’t feature in the 4-1 win over Paraguay, may be in line for a larger role if Pulisic can’t play.

When Pulisic came off at halftime for Sebastian Berhalter on Friday, Malik Tillman — who had been playing in a defensive midfield pivot with Tyler Adams — moved up to Pulisic’s spot as a left attacking midfielder while Berhalter slotted in next to Adams. Aaronson, Gio Reyna and Alex Zendejas are among the other options to play Pulisic’s usual role.

Berhalter and Cristian Roldan would be the obvious options to start where Tillman lined up against Paraguay should he be in a more attacking role, though Mauricio Pochettino mentioned Reyna, Alex Freeman and Sergiño Dest as possible options back when the roster was announced.

Pulisic’s individual talent on the ball and 1-on-1 ability, though, is something the USMNT simply cannot replace. No one else on the roster can do what he does, and the Americans are inherently a less threatening team in attack without him.

“I feel like we were still threatening and creating chances [once he came off],” Robinson said. “We just didn’t convert them. We could’ve scored a lot more in that game, up until Gio scored at the end. We’ve got a lot of people ready to step up and help the team, which is good.”

Family-owned Lion Raisins breaks silence over heir’s vile antisemitic outburst

A family-owned raisin company is distancing itself from one of its heirs after his arrest over a string of racist and antisemitic outbursts in the Pacific Palisades.

In a statement Wednesday, Lion Raisins denounced the conduct of family scion Bruce Lion, 64, following reports detailing his repeated verbal attacks against Jewish neighbors.

“Recent reports about the conduct of Bruce Lion are deeply troubling and do not reflect the values of Lion Raisins,” a company spokesperson said. “We unequivocally condemn antisemitism, racism, and all forms of hate, discrimination, and intolerance. Bruce Lion does not actively participate in the company’s day-to-day operations.”

The statement came a day after Lion charged with making terror threats.

Newly surfaced footage from his arrest shows the dried-produce heir handcuffed and surrounded by officers while unleashing another profanity-laced rant.

“Hey f—k you Jews, f—k you Jews, you’re going to hell,” Lion can be heard shouting.

At another point, he asks the person recording the arrest whether they are Jewish.

“Hey, are you Jewish, boy? Because it’s starting. Five days ago. Judgment day motherf—er. Tell your friends,” he says in the video.

As officers attempted to place him into a patrol vehicle, Lion appeared to resist and continued yelling.

“Listen motherf—er, I’ll f—ng hurt you. Hey, call my lawyer, call my f—ng lawyer,” he is heard saying before the cruiser door closes.

The arrest followed multiple incidents involving Rabbi Zushe Cunin, Lion’s neighbor in Pacific Palisades.

Additional recordings reportedly captured Lion repeatedly using the N-word. Obtained by CA Post

According to videos obtained by the California Post, Lion allegedly shouted antisemitic remarks from the balcony of his $5.3 million mansion, directing abuse toward Cunin and airing what were described as incoherent grievances about Judaism and the rabbi himself.

Cunin said the confrontations escalated after Lion purchased the neighboring property for $5.3 million in March.

The rabbi also accused Lion of disrupting worship services at Chabad of Pacific Palisades, where he allegedly yelled slurs targeting Jewish and black people and falsely claimed Jewish people were responsible for burning down the Palisades.

Additional recordings reportedly captured Lion repeatedly using the N-word.

Cunin said one incident unfolded in front of children attending a congregation gathering at his home.

“It was horrific,” Cunin said. “I’ve never experienced it, especially in front of kids. Little children. In this country, to have to see this kind of hatred and antisemitism is just unacceptable.”

Lion has had several previous encounters with law enforcement, including arrests involving criminal threats and gun possession.

Brendan Sorsby’s agent claims Cincinnati knew about QB’s gambling

The University of Cincinnati denied Wednesday that it knew of Brendan Sorsby’s gambling when the team brought him in.

The denial came after Sorsby’s agent, Ron Slavin, said on Dallas radio station 105.3 The Fan that Cincinnati should be “questioned or catching heat” due to the school knowing about Sorsby’s sports betting.

Slavin added that it should be Cincinnati being punished, as it knew about his gambling and “never said anything.”

Cincinnati refuted the claims in a statement.

“We will reiterate what we have said before,” Cincy shared to multiple outlets. “All of our student-athletes receive extensive gambling education multiple times throughout the year, and we would never knowingly play an athlete who violated NCAA sports wagering regulations. If we ever became aware of impermissible wagering, we would report to the NCAA and comply with sanctions.”

Before heading to Cincinnati, Sorsby was a backup quarterback at Indiana in 2022 and ’23. It was there that he reportedly began sports betting. Over the four years of playing in college, Sorsby placed 9,000 bets, including some on Indiana while he was a player there.

Sorsby, who is now attempting to go pro through the NFL Supplemental Draft, said he never played in any of the games he bet on.

The signal-caller transferred to Texas Tech on Jan. 4, prompting Cincinnati to sue for breach of contract. The suit is still ongoing.

Then, in April, Sorsby announced through Texas Tech that he was entering rehab for a gambling addiction. The same day, the NCAA began investigating him for the bets he placed.

Many across the country, including teams and conferences, wanted Sorsby deemed ineligible to compete for breaking the rules. However, an injunction made by Texas Judge Ken Curry allowed Sorsby to compete

But the outrage led teams and conferences to vow to boycott playing Texas Tech in any sport. However, none of this will now likely happen, as Sorsby will forego the rest of his college eligibility to enter the supplemental draft.

On July 10, he will reportedly host a pro day.

“I am grateful for the support from my family, my Tech coaching staff, teammates, the community, and so many others who have encouraged me to address and learn more about this important issue,” Sorsby said in a statement Monday.

“As my journey continues, I remain fully committed to and focused on being the best I can be, both on and off the field.”

Amateur Logan Reilly adding US Open debut to ‘craziest week of my life’

You’re not going to find Logan Reilly’s name prominently displayed on the betting websites as a favorite to win the U.S. Open this week.

He’s actually a long shot to merely make the cut and play the weekend.

Yet Reilly, a 19-year-old college freshman, is one of the coolest stories among 156 competitors teeing it up at Shinnecock Hills.

He, too, is a name you (and those betting sites) might want to remember, because he’s one of those special young golfers who seems destined to excel once he turns pro.

Maple Leafs hire Jim Hiller as head coach after falling short of postseason

A familiar face is returning to Toronto.

The Maple Leafs announced on Wednesday that they are hiring Jim Hiller to be their next head coach.

Hiller was previously the head coach of the Los Angeles Kings when he got the job full time before the 2024-2025 season, a job he remained in until he was fired on March 1 after an 8-1 loss to Edmonton.

Hiller was hired as an assistant on with the Kings for the 2022-23 season and then received his first head coaching job on an interim basis when Los Angeles fired Todd McLellan in February 2024.

Hiller posted a 93-58-24 over his combined three seasons in Los Angeles.

Before his time in Los Angeles, Hiller was previously an assistant with the Maple Leafs from 2015-19, after which he took the same role for the Islanders for three seasons.

Hiller will head back to a place famously difficult to both play and coach in. General manager John Chayka’s confidence in Hiller comes from his relationships with players.

“What separated Jim was that the player [who] had been around him really valued who he is as a person,” Chayka said Wednesday.

“They really felt like they could trust [him] and that he had their back. They felt like he was committed to making them the best versions of themselves, and that he was a coach that was going to be player-centric, but also a coach who pushed, who wanted the best out of people, and he was creating an environment that brought that out.”

There seems to be confidence that Hiller can bring the Leafs back into contention. Toronto missed the playoffs last year for the first time since captain Auston Matthews was drafted first overall in 2016.

“I’m not here to tear up the roster. There’s good players there, and they’ve shown that in the league,” Hiller said.

“It’s bigger [in Toronto], there’s more volume of media, there’s no question…I know it’s a big job, and it’s a big market, but it’s not something that I think I’m going to personally have to change much to deal with.”

The Leafs went 32-36 last season, falling short of the postseason for the first time since 2016.

The announcement comes shortly after news broke of Toronto’s trade with Philadelphia, where they sent goalie Joseph Woll and defenseman Simon Benoit to the Flyers in exchange for goalie Samuel Ersson, defenseman Emil Andrae and a third-round pick in this year’s draft.

Jonathan Rinderknecht’s attorney Steve Haney will present his case, as Angelinos still blame Bass.

The man accused of ultimately igniting the devastating Palisades Fire has been “a scapegoat from day one,” his high-profile attorney told The California Post.

Steve Haney talks with The Post David Buchan for Ca Post

Miami-based defense attorney Steve Haney, known for his flamboyant style, told The California Post that his client, 29-year-old Jonathan Rinderknecht, has been subjected to “character assassination” since the day of his arrest in connection with the deadly Palisades Fire.

“There’s been a presumption of his guilt from day one,” Haney said. “There’s been a lot of negative pretrial publicity.”

Jonathan Rinderknecht has been called “a scapegoat.” U.S. Attorney’s Office via AP

Haney insists prosecutors have failed to prove Rinderknecht started the Jan. 1, 2025 blaze.

“There is no evidence that he started the fire. This is all circumstantial,” he said.

For more than a week, Haney and Rinderknecht have watched prosecutors build their case largely around the defendant’s state of mind before the fire. Jurors have been shown conversations Rinderknecht had with ChatGPT, which he allegedly used as a journal to vent about climate change and the wealthy.

The government has also highlighted angry text messages sent to a girlfriend who declined to spend New Year’s Eve with him and a French music video he repeatedly played around the time of the fire, which prosecutors argue references burning objects.

“It’s a song about smoking a joint and drinking tea, not arson,” Haney has argued in court.

Prosecutors acknowledged in opening statements that they have no footage showing Rinderknecht igniting a fire shortly after midnight, relying instead on cellphone records and grainy surveillance video placing him near where the initial 9-acre blaze began.

David Buchan for Ca Post

Fire experts have testified that the catastrophic Jan. 7 Palisades Fire was a rekindling of the Jan. 1 fire, which smoldered underground for days before powerful Santa Ana winds fanned it into the inferno that devastated Pacific Palisades and parts of Malibu.

“Rinderknecht wasn’t anywhere near the Palisades on January 7,” Haney has repeatedly noted.

Before Rinderknecht’s arrest, much of the public blame was directed at Mayor Karen Bass, who was in Ghana on a trip led by then-President Joe Biden when the fire erupted.

Mayor Bass was in Africa when the deadly inferno erupted Be Like Water Media / BACKGRID

Critics also blasted Bass over empty reservoirs in Pacific Palisades during the crisis, fueling anti-Bass activism and even helping spark former reality star Spencer Pratt’s mayoral campaign.

When asked by The Post whether his client had become a scapegoat for Bass and the city, Haney declined to go there.

Joel Rinderknecht leaving court. David Buchan for Ca Post

“I’m not allowed to get into that,” he said. “The judge made it very clear that we’re not to address those issues of negligence. We’ll stay focused on the lack of evidence that Jonathan started the fire on January 1.”

Rinderknecht’s father, Joel, has attended court daily and remains adamant his son is innocent. Haney expects to begin presenting the defense case Thursday, hoping to persuade the all-Los Angeles jury that Rinderknecht is not the villain prosecutors have portrayed.

“People may have made up their minds already,” Haney said. “Hopefully the jury will keep an open mind and follow the evidence.”
