Suspect charged with attempted murder in daylight stray bullet shooting of elderly woman: cops

A suspect was charged with attempted murder in the broad-daylight Bronx shooting that left an elderly woman struck by a stray bullet and a younger man also hurt, police said.

Matthew Bonilla, 26, was also charged with assault and criminal possession of a weapon in connection to the 1:20 p.m. Wednesday burst of gunfire that left a 79-year-old woman caught in the crossfire, authorities and law enforcement sources said.

The senior was struck in the left leg, as was a 26-year-old man who appeared to be the intended target, according to cops and sources.

The wounded man appeared to have been exchanging gunfire with someone else when the innocent senior was in the wrong place at the wrong time, the sources said.

Both victims went to St. Barnabas Hospital, where they were listed in stable condition, authorities said.

Bonilla, who lives about a block from the shooting scene, was last arrested in Aug. of 2023 when officers stopped him for a traffic infraction and realized he had a stolen license plate affixed to his vehicle, cops said.

His arraignment in connection to the double-shooting case was pending Thursday.

One other person is still being sought in the violence, cops said.

Police could not immediately confirm whether one or both men fired shots during the afternoon frenzy.

California bill would charge high rates, take people to court for records requests

Transparency advocates are enraged over a sneaky change to a California bill that would make it harder to get details on what government agencies are doing — and could even haul people seeking public records to court.

News publishers and other First Amendment supporters had already opposed Assembly Bill 1821 by Assemblymember Blanca Pacheco (D), which initially just sought to extend the timeline for when government entities, such as city halls or state agencies, needed to respond to a request for public records.

But Pacheco adjusted her measure so that steep fees can be charged for the time staff spends to find publicly available records: an administrative fee of $22.35 per hour and a “professional fee” of $66.26 per hour, both subject to cost-of-living increases.

Not only that, under the newest version of the bill, if a government believes the record requester has “malicious intent,” it can ask a court to make that determination and put the request on hold pending a court decision.

The pro-free speech nonprofit First Amendment Coalition blasted the new language and claimed obtaining government records would cost much more. Currently, agencies may generally only charge for copying costs.

Asm. Blanca Pacheco Digital Democracy Matters

But the “malicious intent” provision that allows the government to take someone to court is particularly dangerous, claimed David Snyder, the coalition’s executive director.

“It would be easily weaponized by agencies seeking to thwart transparency and accountability, as has already happened elsewhere in the country,” he said. “For decades, California law has been clear that state and local agencies cannot sue records requesters.”

A spokesperson for Pacheco told The Post that the bill is designed to help small government entities like city and county governments — who support the legislation — handle unreasonable records requests.

For example, counties have pointed to a case in late 2021 in early 2022 in which a requester sought records between El Dorado County and four email domains over a five year period. That resulted in more than 42,000 potential records, but the county could not get the requester to narrow his or her request even after going to court.

“The malicious-intent provision is intended to address the rare circumstances in which the Public Records Act is being used to disrupt agency operations, harass staff, or consume disproportionate public resources without a corresponding public benefit,” Pacheco’s office said.

The legislator described the court determination process as a “safeguard” and said the bill “does not authorize punitive damages, penalties, or damages actions against requesters.”

Supporters also note the bill’s fees mainly targets commercial requesters — those making records requests for a company such as a data broker to make profit — and not those in education or the news media.

Graham Knaus, CEO of the California State Association of Counties, insisted to The Post that going to the court for “malicious intent” determinations will only be used for very rare cases. It’s about leaving it to an impartial court — not the government agency itself — to be the adjudicator, he added.

Artificial intelligence has made it extremely easy to draft records requests, and unreasonable requests can force huge costs that ultimately hurt the public, he said.

“We believe that taxpayers should not be forced to bear the cost of an AI business model for those that are attempting to overwhelm the ability of local governments to provide services to our residents,” he said.

Still, the measure can put a “chill” on general access to government information, Snyder said, and does not make California Democrats who have attacked President Donald Trump for non-transparency look great.

“The fundamentals of democracy are being tested now in America. It is exactly the wrong time for California to take the serious backward step toward unaccountability,” he said.

Lawmakers have until end of August to send bills to the governor. Pacheco’s bill passed the Assembly and is currently making its way through the state Senate.

Luigi Mangione bizarrely withdraws ‘extreme emotional disturbance’ defense claim 1 day after filing it

Luigi Mangione has abruptly scrapped the psychiatric defense he planned to use at his upcoming trial in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.

“The defense respectfully withdraws CPL 250.10 notice at this time,” the accused killer’s lawyers wrote to Judge Gregory Carro in Manhattan Supreme Court.

The letter means that Mangione no longer plans to argue that he was in the throes of an “extreme emotional disturbance” when he gunned down Thompson on a Midtown sidewalk in December 2024.

The eyebrow-raising legal gambit would have knocked the charge down to manslaughter instead of murder — carrying less prison time — if jurors bought it.

Moment Texas grandpa braves flames to save his home, grandkids, after explosion

A Texas grandfather who suffered severe burns after an old barrel he bought at an auction suddenly exploded bolted back into the fire to save his house and grandchildren, harrowing video shows.

Home footage from Carl Motley’s Texoma home captured the moment the barrel, which had leftover oil inside, erupted into a fireball after the grandpa tried to cut it open with a plasma torch just outside the house, KXII reported.

The flames immediately engulf Motley as his two grandchildren and their dog stand just a few feet away, with black smoke surging.

His sister, Carin Curry, said Motley’s actions effectively saved the house from damage and kept the children safe.

“He kind of likes to call himself like a Superman,” she told the local outlet. “He’s always willing to help everyone, so he did kind of react like a Superman that day and just take care of it the best that he could.”

Where to Stream ‘Toy Story’ Movies and Specials Before ‘Toy Story 5’

It’s almost time to reunite with Andy’s toys for the fifth time as Toy Story 5 heads to theaters this weekend.

The new film will continue Toy Story‘s 31-year legacy by introducing some new toys to the ones we already know and love. The movie is already drawing rave reviews, but before you head to the theater, might we suggest a little movie night at home?

All four Toy Story features, plus a bunch of shorts and specials, are streaming on Disney+.

Disney+ offers a number of subscription options, so you can find the one that works for you. With ads, a subscription costs $11.99/month; without ads, it’s $18.99/month or $189.99/year.

There are also Disney+ bundles with Hulu, HBO Max, and ESPN+, so you can subscribe to up to three services at once and save over 40% every month. The bundles are available in a few different configurations, starting at $11.99/month for Disney+ and Hulu with ads, and going up to $32.99/month for Disney+, Hulu, and Max ad-free.

In 1995, the world first met soon-to-be best friends Woody (Tom Hanks) and Buzz (Tim Allen). The first Toy Story follows Woody and the rest of Andy’s toys as a new toy joins the toybox and immediately becomes Andy’s favorite. Despite his jealousy, Woody must work with Buzz to escape the clutches of Andy’s new neighbor and reunite with their boy.

Biden gets left behind at Obama Center opening: ‘Where’s my granddaughter’

They just left him there.

Former President Joe Biden was awkwardly left lingering by himself on stage at the grand opening of the Barack Obama Presidential Center in Chicago, tepidly waving at the crowd after the ceremony ended.

A gleeful Obama had waltzed off the stage to the music, followed by a smiling former first lady Jill Biden, while the 46th president stood there seemingly dazed all by himself.

For reasons that aren’t clear, the 83-year-old went over to the podium and took off his sunglasses before staring into the crowd with a puzzled look on his face.

“Where’s my granddaughter?” he shouted.

The former president then seemingly started to make his way off-stage before footage of the event cut off.

Biden’s rare public outing was reminiscent of parts of his presidency, when he was seen wandering after events with a confused look on his face.

The 46th president joined former Presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and their spouses in celebrating the grand opening of the Barack Obama Presidential Center on Thursday. Former Vice President Kamala Harris was also in attendance.

It was a rare public appearance by the former president, who is currently battling prostate cancer, which metastasized to his bones.

At one point, Obama went over to Biden and gave him a pat on the back as the two shared a laugh. The 44th president gave him kudos during his remarks.

“Thank you to your steadfast partnership for eight years. Joe, we started as running mates, and ended as family. And we would not be here without you, and we are grateful,” Obama said.

The Biden presidency is a sore spot for many Democrats due to how it ended. Critics argue that the octogenarian should’ve stepped aside earlier to give the party a better shot at beating President Trump.

“He made a terrible mistake,” Hillary Clinton told New Yorker editor David Remnick earlier this week. “He made a terrible mistake for himself, his legacy, and for the country.”

“We would have had a real contest,” she added about how events would’ve unfolded if Biden didn’t run. “And very sadly I believe whoever emerged from that contest, whether it was the vice president or a governor or a senator or anybody else, would have beaten Donald Trump.”

Thursday marked a rare public appearance for the former president. REUTERS

Jill Biden recently admitted that if she had a redo, she would’ve pushed her husband against seeking a second term.

She also publicly claimed that she thought her husband was having a stroke during his fumbling debate performance against Trump in 2024.

Biden had been the oldest president in US history, though Trump, who turned 80 on Sunday, is poised to top that by the end of his term.
