Millionaire raisin heir floods cell to dodge court for antisemitic attack

The wealthy heir to a raisin empire who yelled vile antisemitic slurs at his Rabbi neighbor from the balcony of his $5.3 million mansion has been charged with three felony hate crimes.

Bruce Lion, the 64-year-old scion tied to the dried fruit dynasty, flooded his cell repeatedly this week to avoid standing in front of a judge, the California Post can reveal.

He was still slapped with one count of violation of civil rights and two counts of criminal threats after he was allegedly recorded by Rabbi Zushe Cunin making vicious threats.

Lion was scheduled to appear before a judge Thursday afternoon. He made it to the courthouse but wasn’t allowed upstairs to the courtroom due to his behavior.

He was allegedly strapped to a safety chair and had flooded his cell by flushing the toilet non stop. His lawyer told the court Lion had mental health issues and entered a not guilty plea on his behalf.

The judge then ordered an evaluation and examination and bond was set at $225,000. If convicted as charged, he faces up to nine years and four months in state prison.

The Post last week obtained several videos of Lion harassing neighbor Cunin from the balcony of his mansion, screaming grievances he had with the Jewish faith or with the religious leader himself.

In one vile exchange, he screamed: “I ain’t going nowhere Jew boy, lose some f—ing weight. Go f—ing work. Do something for a change.

“Your fake f—ing gospel don’t mean s—t. You’re f—ing done. You kill Jesus, you’re going to f—ing hell. Do you understand?” Lion also threatened to “pull” the rabbi’s nose.

Rabbi Cunin said: “While the legal process must now take its course, we hope these charges provide a measure of reassurance to our community, which has endured months of fear, intimidation, financial loss, and trauma.”

He added, “Our focus remains on healing, strengthening our community, and ensuring that every family can live, worship, and raise their children in peace and safety.”

When Lion was arrested on June 13, he was seen spewing more anti-Semitic hate towards a camera man capturing the arrest.

He can be heard yelling: “Hey f—k you Jews, f—k you Jews, you’re going to hell,” among other unhinged statements.

The scion was also seen resisting while being placed into a police cruiser.“Listen motherf—er, I’ll f—ng hurt you. Hey, call my lawyer, call my f—ng lawyer,” hes’ heard saying as the door closes.

A friend of the Lion family, identifying herself only as Megan, says that Lion has been troubled for some time.

“Bruce has some mental issues and they need to be addressed immediately ” she told The Post, adding: “But right now my thoughts are with Rabbi Cunin, we need to do whatever it takes to make sure he doesn’t feel threatened in his own home.”

Megan tried to see Lion today, but when he wasn’t let into to the courtroom she was only able to give the bailiff a message of support for the heir.

District attorney Nathan Hochman said: “Hate has no place in Los Angeles County. Los Angeles County is experiencing an alarming increase in hate crimes, with record-high antisemitic offenses, we will prosecute any crime motivated by prejudice against them.”

Lion is scheduled to be in court again on July 6 after his mental health evaluation.

Sam Kennedy addresses Red Sox ‘brutal’ trade deadline reality

The Red Sox are in unfamiliar territory

CEO Sam Kennedy said Wednesday that despite high expectations entering the season, selling at the Aug. 3 trade deadline may be a reality if the team doesn’t improve soon.

“It’s brutal. We have rarely found ourselves in that situation and when you do, like every trade deadline, you have to do what’s in the best interest of the organization,” Kennedy said in an interview with NESN. “Not any one person, not a member of the front office, not a player, not an executive, you have to do what’s in the best interest of the organization, and that’s what we’ll do if we’re in that position.”

“But it’s brutal and truly sort of unthinkable given the expectations. That’s what’s made these first couple of months so difficult, because we did have high expectations internally and externally,” he added.

Kennedy’s comments come less than a week after an appearance on “The Greg Hill Show,” where he was realistic about the spot the team was in when it was 27-39.

“But look, let’s be honest, unless things change dramatically, we may have to pivot here from what our initial planning was,” he said at the time. “It just wouldn’t be responsible to do otherwise. But here in mid-June, we need to see what happens over the next couple weeks, and then we’ll reassess.”

The Red Sox made the playoffs in 2025 and entered 2026 with expectations of returning, but their season has been an unmitigated disaster, as they sit at 29-43 after Thursday’s loss to the Blue Jays and last in the American League East.

The team ranks dead last in the league in runs, 21st in hits while drawing the second-fewest walks. The Red Sox’s .314 on-base percentage also ranks just 21st.

Caleb Durbin, who hit over .250 with the Brewers in 2025, is hitting under .200. Jarren Duran, who hit .256 last season, is at just .213. Trevor Story continues to be extremely whelming at a near-career-low .206.

The Red Sox’s pitching hasn’t fared much better, as Brayan Bello was demoted to Triple-A and Garrett Crochet, while injured since April 25, pitched to just a 6.30 ERA when healthy.

Manager Alex Cora was fired on April 26 after a 10-17 start, but the team has regressed further since, going 19-25.

The Red Sox entered Thursday 5 1/2 games back of the AL’s third wild-card spot with over half the season to play, but must catch five teams to claim the spot, making selling a real possibility.

Knicks parade serves as a bittersweet moment for champs

By the end, after Alicia Keys had brought down the house and helped raise the Knicks together one last time, this time to dance to “Empire State of Mind,” a fine New York morning and afternoon were finally winding down. Nobody yelled, “Last call,” but the sentiment was plain:

You don’t have to go home. But you can’t stay here.

That was right. That fit. In so many ways, this felt like the last high school party before everyone scatters off to the wind: to college, to the service, to the workforce. The streets of lower Manhattan had started to fill before the sun even rose, which is what happens when you wait 80 years for a celebration like this.

Before the captain, Jalen Brunson, could summarize it all in three simple words:

Rams Kam Curl reveals players don’t get deals on World Cup tickets

Attending the World Cup this summer is one of the most desired events to attend, but it is also one of the most expensive to attend.

So expensive that regular tenants of the 16 stadiums hosting World Cup matches this summer might not even be able to go.

Los Angeles Rams safety Kam Curl appeared as a guest on the Up and Adams Show Thursday afternoon and was asked by the show’s host, Kay Adams, if the Rams get discounted tickets, to which Curl responded by saying “No.”

“We gotta pay full Price,” Curl said to Adams. “It’s crazy, y’all in our stadium. But it is what it is, I’ll watch it on TV.”

Los Angeles Stadium, also known as SoFi Stadium to the Rams and Chargers, who play there during the NFL season, is hosting 8 matches for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Five of those matches include group stage matches, with two games scheduled for the second round, and will host one quarterfinal match.

Tickets for the event have skyrocketed in price. Houston Public Media reported that the USA’s opening first round game against Paraguay last week was costing fans between $1,000 to more than $30,000.

On top of the outrageous prices for tickets, The New York Times reported in February that fans would be paying between $75 to $300 in prices for parking.

The New York Times also revealed that, with the high cost of tickets, parking, and food, the cities hosting these games would not receive any of the revenue generated, as the World Cup will provide exposure to American cities.

While Curl will end up watching the games from the comfort of his home, he did mention that he enjoys seeing the World Cup games being played on real grass, instead of artificial turf.

“I’m gonna tell them to leave it out there,” Curl said on Up and Adams. “I’ll [water] it myself.”

Bosnia soccer fans take over the streets of Inglewood

FIFA World Cup fever has officially hit the city of Inglewood.

Just before Bosnia suffered a 4–1 loss to Switzerland in a group B World Cup match at Los Angeles Stadium, hundreds of Bosnian soccer fans were seen marching down the streets of the LA County neighborhood.

The Bosnia fan base is the latest group to partake in the World Cup celebrations across the USA this summer.

The group of Bosnian fans was seen chanting “Bosnia” over the relentless beat of a drum and a chorus of claps while waving the country’s flag.

Making their way down to Los Angeles Stadium, another video emerged on X, showing the group proudly parading through Inglewood.

When kickoff began for Thursday’s game, the fans’ presence didn’t slow down as the respective Bosnian and Switzerland fans packed Los Angeles Stadium, which has been temporarily renamed from SoFi Stadium for the duration of the tournament.

The Bosnian fanbase has been on full display during the game as they have overtaken multiple sections of the stadium and have been seen waving yellow flags, while singing and cheering throughout the game.

Bosnia has been one of the most loud and proud fanbases throughout the World Cup. Before their first Group B game, where they tied Canada 1–1 at Toronto Stadium, the Balkan fans also took over the streets of the Canadian city.

Thousands gathered across downtown Toronto, making their way to the stadium while cheering, chanting, banging drums, and waving flags as they marched in unison.

While Thursday has been the first day Bosnian fans have been spotted celebrating across the streets of Los Angeles, it’s not the first time the City of Angels has felt the impact of the World Cup.

Last week, South Korean fans took over Little Tokyo where they enjoyed a watch party when they played South Africa.

Jennifer Siebel Newsom dodges question on DOJ probe at Obama event

California Gov. Gavin Newsom and his wife Jennifer Siebel Newsom flew to Chicago to attend the Thursday opening of former President Barack Obama’s Presidential Library — and questions around a bombshell federal probe into the couple seemed to follow them there.

When questioned about the investigation at the event, California’s first lady had an awkward exchange a reporter before quickly directing attention to the library.

“I’m just so grateful for this inspiration and leadership,” she said, presumably referring to Obama.

“We need more of this!” she exclaimed, before looking away from the reporter.

That’s when her husband stepped in to answer.

“This is stuff that happens in other countries. That’s all I’ll say. Happens in other countries,” he said, repeating his Monday accusations that President Trump used the investigation to target his political enemies.

“He wants to go after me? Go after me,” Newsom said before ending the interview.

Siebel Newsom did comment on the probe earlier in the week, sticking to her husband’s portrayal of the probe.

“There are clearly no boundaries to what Donald Trump will do to get his way or to challenge those who get in his way,” she said in a statement.

Sources close to Newsom have told other media outlets that the investigation focuses on nonprofit projects connected to Siebel Newsom, one of which The California Post revealed in March has received millions from special interests doing business with Newsom and the state.

The governor had claimed that federal agents have knocked on the doors of family, friends and former employees.

Penguins sideline reporter fired one month after her wedding

From the best day of your life to a low point in your life.

Penguins rinkside reporter Hailey Hunter experienced that emotional roller coaster this week as it was revealed she was fired by SportsNet Pittsburgh — a month after getting married.

“Unfortunately, I was told the Penguins have decided that they simply wanted to move in a different direction with the role,” Hunter told TribLive. “I really wasn’t given any details, but I understand that’s the business we are in.”

A female reporter holds a microphone with the Sportsnet Pittsburgh logo, standing on the edge of a hockey rink during a game.

Hunter spent three years with the SportsNet after joining the broadcasting team during the 23-24 season, helping cover the franchise her father, Tim Hrynewich, played 55 games for from 1982-84.

A graduate of Ohio State, she first attempted to make the LPGA Tour before entering the broadcasting business.

Hunter and fiancé Gage Posey married on May 16 after five years together.

The firing shocked fans, as support poured out for the reporter after the news broke on Wednesday.

“She was very, very good, really sad! stupid move on their part,” one supporter said.

“What?! Hailey was so good. This sucks,” another chimed in.

SportsNet Pittsburgh announced it would “soon begin a nationwide search for a rinkside reporter for our Penguins coverage.”

The move comes after a Penguins season in which the team made the playoffs in what was supposed to be the beginning of a transition with an aging core surprisingly seeking a third Stanley Cup since 2016.

Puerto Rico roiled by widening political crisis as top official comes under fire

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — The administration of Puerto Rico Gov. Jenniffer González is mired in a new political crisis, with allegations of public corruption, government interference and conflicts of interest.

González’s chief of staff Francisco Domenech is the latest to be ensnared in a high-profile investigation, following the resignation last month of Puerto Rico’s economic development chief Sebastián Negrón, who accused the administration of interfering with the agency’s work. More than 10 other officials — including the chief of staff, general counsel and finance chief — also resigned from the agency as it tries to lure new investors to an island struggling with chronic power outages and other issues.

Domenech, who maintains a high profile in his role, also serves as executive director of Puerto Rico’s Fiscal Agency and Financial Advisory Authority.

On Wednesday, Domenech submitted sworn statements against Negrón to Puerto Rico’s Department of Justice and its Office of Government Ethics, alleging corruption and conflicts of interest. On Thursday, he justified his actions in an interview with WIPR, a government TV station.

Domenech said he only took action this week because it took time to compile what he says is evidence against Negrón, whom the governor has described as “a star” as she lamented his resignation in late May.

The allegations against Domenech, which are being investigated by an independent state agency, have caught the attention of U.S. Congress, with federal lawmakers questioning the governor about them on Wednesday. She said the allegations are false.

Meanwhile, Puerto Rico Senate President Thomas Rivera Schatz, a member of the governor’s pro-statehood party, called Wednesday for Domenech’s resignation. On Thursday, Rivera Schatz offered legislative immunity to Domenech and anyone else “if they confess their crimes and produce results that eradicate corruption.”

Domenech’s interview marked his first public comments since Negrón accused him of irregularities related to contract processing and undue government interference. Negrón also referred to the Justice Department and its Office of Government Ethics, the findings of an internal investigation led by the economic development agency against two government officials, who are accused of interfering in the process for an auction of a contract involving federal funds.

Domenech’s submitted his sworn statements after alleged private text messages between him and Negrón were made public earlier this week, roiling the U.S. territory. Some of the alleged messages reflect pressure to find positions within the economic development agency for hard-core loyalists of González who worked on her campaign. Domenech also alleged that Negrón knew he was being investigated.

In a statement issued Thursday, Negrón called Domenech’s allegations against him false.

“The most troubling aspect of what happened today is not the attack against me personally, but the message it sends to every public servant who witnesses irregularities and decides to report them,” Negrón said.

He also asserted that companies who have invested in Puerto Rico have been dragged into the scandal.

“Puerto Rico needs to strengthen the confidence of those who invest, produce, and generate opportunities, not turn them into collateral damage in personal or political disputes or vendettas,” Negrón said.

Gilgo Beach killer Rex Heuermann shipped out of Long Island as ex-wife gives blunt parting message

Good riddance.

The ex-wife of Long Island serial killer Rex Heuermann said Thursday that he got what he had coming — even as the hulking brute was shipped upstate to start serving a life sentence for butchering eight sex workers.

“She believes Rex got what he deserves,” Bob Macedonio, the lawyer for the killer’s former spouse, Asa Ellerup, told The Post. “She believes the sentence was 100% appropriate and her thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families.”

Heuermann, 62, was sentenced to three life terms in Suffolk County court Wednesday after pleading guilty to strangling his victims to death between 1993 and 2010, torturing and dumping the bodies.

The confessed killer was taken from the Suffolk County jail on Thursday morning transferred to the Green Haven Correctional Facility in Dutchess County, the county sheriff’s office and state officials said.

“Rex Heuermann is currently undergoing admission processing at Green Haven Correctional Facility, one of the department’s designated intake facilities,” a rep for the state Department of Correction and Community Supervision said in an email.

Authorities have not revealed which prison will ultimately be Heuermann’s forever home.

How The Post covered Rex Heuermann’s sentencing for killing eight Long Island women.

The 6-foot-4 Massapequa Park architect confessed to killing eight women and dumping their bodies along desolate stretches of Long Island, where they were found starting in December 2010.

The cases remained unsolved until the investigation was reopened in 2022 and led to Heuermann’s arrest the next year — partly thanks to DNA from a pizza box he tossed in the trash.

In April, Heuermann confessed to killing Amber Lynn Costello, 27; Megan Waterman, 22; Melissa Barthelemy, 24; and Maureen Brainard-Barnes, 25, who were famously known as the “Gilgo Four” — as well as Valerie Mack, 24; Jessica Taylor, 20; and Sandra Costilla, 28, the first victim killed in 1993.

He also copped to killing Karen Vergata, 34, whose 1996 murder had not been linked to him.

All but one of his victims were mercilessly bound and tortured to death in a “kill room” in the family’s basement while Ellerup and the couple’s two children were out of town.

At an emotional sentencing hearing in Riverhead on Wednesday, 13 relatives of the slain women faced the killer for the first time, delivering heart-wrenching victim impact statements.

“Look at me while I’m talking,” Barthelemy’s sister, Amanda Funderburg, told Heuermann.

She was just 15 when her older sister was murdered in 2009, and forced to endure cruel, threatening and mocking phone calls from Heuerrmann describing the slaying.

“I was forced to live with crippling anxiety, depression, PTSD, and destroyed nervous system constantly staring at my phone,” Funderberg told the killer. “Because of the several times you had called me from my sister’s phone telling me she was a whore.”

Judge Timothy Mazzei teared up during victim impact statements, then hit Rex Heuermann with three life sentences. James Carbone/Pool Newsday via AP

Judge Timothy Mazzei, who wiped tears from his eyes during the victims’ statements, then asked Heuermann if he had anything to say, snapping at him, “Stand up!”

“There are no words I can say, but I am responsible for what was said in this room today,” Heuermann said. “The words I would say have no meaning and I’m going to leave it there at this time.”

Then it was the judge’s turn.

“I know that you’re sorry you got caught. I assume that you’re sorry for what you did to your wife and children,” Mazzei said. “You’ve been described as a very big man but you’re a disgusting and despicable small man if you’re a man at all and you’re a coward.”

The judge then turned to court officers — “Get him out of here.”

Gavin Newsom’s $12M diaper deal riles Dem, Republicans

Gov. Gavin Newsom’s free diaper program is moving forward in a tentative California budget deal — over the objections of skeptical Democratic and Republican lawmakers who say the program reeked of favoritism.

Baby2Baby, a Los Angeles nonprofit with deep Hollywood ties, is poised to keep running Newsom’s Golden State Start diaper program after his administration sought an exemption to allow the group to avoid a formal bidding process while receiving a $12.5 million contract extension into next year.

The program, which launched ahead of Mother’s Day, provides 400 free diapers to newborns discharged from participating California hospitals, regardless of family income.

The nonprofit’s co-CEO, Norah Weinstein, sits on the board of the California Partners Project, a nonprofit co-founded by first partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom.

That connection has fueled questions over whether Baby2Baby received favorable treatment through a request-for-information process that critics say provided less oversight than a traditional request for proposals.

State Sen. Caroline Menjivar, a Democrat from San Fernando, raised the issue directly during a budget hearing last month, questioning why Baby2Baby was selected despite what she called “the closeness to the first partner.”

State Sen. Caroline Menjivar slammed the optics of the deal in a recent budget hearing. MediaNews Group via Getty Images

“I will say the optics of this vendor is not good at all,” Menjivar said.

She also questioned why the state is providing diapers to all families, saying lawmakers would be left to defend the program after Newsom leaves office.

“The administration and the governor is going to be gone, and we’re going to continue to get hit on this,” Menjivar said.

Questions have been raised on whether California is paying too much for Baby2Baby’s diapers in the new contract. Getty Images for Baby2Baby

“Optically speaking, it was not a smart move to choose the vendor that we chose.”

Officials with the Department of Health Care Access and Information defended the process at the hearing, saying the state received 15 responses from vendors, nonprofits, diaper banks and others. They said Baby2Baby was selected after proposals were evaluated for cost, distribution capacity and ability to meet the program’s goals.

Newsom’s office has previously said the budget language was needed to ensure the program’s continuity as it expands to more hospitals statewide.

But Republican lawmakers remain unconvinced.

State Sen. Tony Strickland said the Baby2baby deal is another example of government “waste and inefficiency.” MediaNews Group via Getty Images

State Sen. Tony Strickland, of Huntington Beach, said the deal shows “the waste and inefficiency of government.”

“When you break down the cost, they’re going through a nonprofit run by someone close to the governor’s wife, and it comes out to about 50 cents per diaper,” Strickland said. “You can go to Target and find diapers for 16 cents apiece. That just shows the waste and inefficiency of government.”

Baby2Baby officials have said the nonprofit was contracted for $6.2 million in the first year, covering 40 million diapers for roughly 100,000 births — about 15.5 cents per diaper. They said the California Partners Project had no role in the Golden State Start initiative and that Weinstein volunteers on the California Partners Project board without pay.

Strickland said the Legislature’s broader budget deal is moving ahead despite concerns about new spending and taxes.

“There’s no stopping it,” he said. “At a time when we have record revenues coming in, we’re spending up to match those revenues in a way that can’t sustain itself, and we’re going to have a structural deficit moving forward.”

Baby2Baby is backed by celebrity donors and Hollywood power players, the same universe of wealthy liberals who could be important for Newsom if he runs for president in 2028.

Baby2Baby’s public-facing “Angels” roster reads like a Hollywood donor call sheet, with Kim Kardashian, Katy Perry, Blake Lively, Drew Barrymore, Amy Adams, Kristen Bell, Mindy Kaling, Paris Hilton, Salma Hayek Pinault, Kerry Washington, Serena Williams, Chrissy Teigen, Zoe Saldaña, Hilary Duff and Ali Wong among the donors.

Its board includes celebrities like Jessica Alba, Ciara, Miranda Kerr and Kelly Rowland.

Perhaps never before has a diaper deal smelled so much like cash.
