Cape Fear Episode 3 “Phantom Sensations” ends not with Max Cady (Javier Bardem) terrorizing one of the Bowdens, but a mysterious woman tormenting him.
Now we’ve seen this strange masked woman stalking key players of Cape Fear many times before. First, she rudely bumped into Amy Adams‘s Anna Bowden in the ER, and then she repeatedly stalked Max for some reason. While it’s still unclear who she is and what she wants with Max within the world of Apple TV’s Cape Fear, the reveal of who’s playing her is a massive treat for fans of Martin Scorsese‘s Cape Fear.
**Spoilers for Cape Fear Episode 3 “Phantom Sensations,” now streaming on Apple TV**
The end of Cape Fear Episode 3 “Phantom Sensations” reveals that series showrunner Nick Antosca has tapped Cape Fear (1991) star Juliette Lewis to play someone from Max Cady’s traumatic past. We don’t know who she is, yet, but she at least knows Max well enough to trigger awful memories of his abusive father keeping him in a kennel like a dog.
Halfway through this week’s Cape Fear, Lewis’s character accidentally knocks on Anna’s hotel room door, thinking Max is inside. She claims she wants to sing him a song, but dashes off as soon as she realizes her mistake. At the end of the episode, though, she finds a way to serenade her guy.
Max realizes to his unease that someone has snuck into his house at the end of Cape Fear Episode 3. They have left him a TV/VCR flickering static on his coffee table and an envelope labeled, “Hi Max.” Inside is a video tape that reveals Lewis as the woman following Max. She acts like she knows him well and begins to sing the Butthole Surfers’s “Jingle of a Dog Collar.” As Max begins to panic, he discovers a dog collar in the envelope, and breaks down.
“That was the first time that we had to deal with the childhood trauma of Max,” Javier Bardem told DECIDER. “And I would say that they were not scared to go as far as we wanted to go with [it]. And I loved that because that’s part of his problem.”
“Like he’s been abused and he has suffered a lot of pain emotional, psychological pain that now is reflected in the way he treats others. And it was important for the audience to feel that in him — not to justify him, but to understand him better. So it was a great moment for me to take a step forward into his mind.”
Lewis’s character obviously is tied to Max’s past, but how did Cape Fear get Juliette Lewis?
Cape Fear Episode 3 Ending Explained: Who is Juliette Lewis in Apple TV’s Cape Fear?
Okay, we don’t yet know who Juliette Lewis is playing in Cape Fear, but we know how she got the part. It turns out showrunner Nick Antosca always wanted her involved in his version of the twisted tale.
I was on set with Juliette shooting an episode of The Act in 2019, probably when we first started talking about doing Cape Fear, and it was always my hope that she would be involved in any version of it,” Antosca said. “Juliette is an amazing actress. I remember watching her on set then and, god, she’s so good. She’s so present and alive and just interesting to watch always.”
Antosca explained it took a long time to get his vision for the series off the ground because he first had to “untangle the rights” to the story and then the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes hit right after the development process. “But once the project got going, I called Juliette,” he said.
Juliette Lewis earned an Oscar nomination for her work playing Danielle Bowden, the teenaged girl Robert De Niro’s Max Cady seduces in a revenge plot against her attorney father (Nick Nolte), in Scorsese’s Cape Fear. Now, she’s the one who gets to toy with Max.
Cape Fear Episodes 1-3 are now streaming on Apple TV. New episodes premiere weekly on Fridays.
