Census 2027: Over 74,000 self-enumeration submissions received in Kozhikode

The Census 2027 is taking a new step into the digital age through the self-enumeration process, which is the country’s first digital and fully self-reported headcount exercise. Nearly 74,301 people have completed the process in Kozhikode district, according to officials

Kerala’s self-enumeration window concluded on Tuesday (June 30, 2026), with field enumeration set to begin after the completion of the three-day boundary mapping and house-numbering exercise that commenced on Wednesday (July 1, 2026).

“The distribution of the available Census kits was completed on Wednesday itself after the central agency supplied fewer kits than required for the district,” District Collector M.S. Madhavikutty said.

The self-enumeration facility allowed residents to submit the household details online ahead of the visit by enumerators, easing their workload and speeding up the Census process. Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar and Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan formally kicked off the initiative by submitting their own household details online on June 16.

The online form requires residents to answer 34 questions covering details of the head of the household, housing conditions, ownership status and access to amenities such as LPG and the internet. “Technical details such as building numbers and Census house numbers need not be filled in by residents. These will be recorded by the enumerators during their visit,” said P. Lalu, a senior clerk in the Irrigation Department who is serving as an enumerator.

“Any errors in the self-reported data will be verified and corrected during the field enumeration process. There are some confusing questions in the form, such as those relating to the number of married couples in a household and the type of latrine. There is a possibility that these questions may be answered incorrectly because the options are confusing. These will have to be cross-checked during the field enumeration,” he added.
