Communist Party of India State secretary M. Veerapandian on Monday termed as “inappropriate” DMK president and former Chief Minister M.K. Stalin’s reported remark that Tamil Nadu could face an election any time or in the near future.
“Mr. Stalin is a former Chief Minister and a veteran political leader who had learnt the nuances of politics from the late DMK president M. Karunanidhi and such a remark is inappropriate in a democracy, “ Mr. Veerapandian told journalists in Perambalur where his party organised a demonstration.
“A new government (led by TVK) has been formed in Tamil Nadu as the people of the State had voted for it. Hence, we have to second the verdict of the people,” Mr. Veerapandian said. As the leader of the “largest democratic party in Tamil Nadu”, Mr. Stalin should stand with democracy and must say the new government should go on as per law. “[On the contrary] Such a remark (that the government won’t last) of Mr. Stalin does not suit his political stature,” Mr. Veerapandian said.
Mr. Stalin had on Sunday said Tamil Nadu could face an election any time since the TVK-led government did not command a majority.
Asked about the performance of Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay’s government, Mr. Veerapandian said “let’s wait and see”. Only one month has passed since the new government took charge with a new team. “The DMK and the AIADMK had ruled the State for several years. The CPI’s demand was the TVK should implement the (electoral) promises it had made,” Mr. Veerapandian added.
