The CPI(M) has urged the Election Commission of India (ECI) to extend the deadline for the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls by at least one month, citing practical difficulties faced by the voters in completing the verification process.

The demand was made through a resolution adopted at the party’s two-day State Committee meeting held in Vijayawada on June 28 and 29 under the chairmanship of Central Committee member K. Lokanatham.

The meeting was attended by Polit Bureau members B.V. Raghavulu and U. Vasuki, State secretary V. Srinivasa Rao and Central Committee member D. Ramadevi.

The CPI(M) leaders said many voters lacked awareness of the process and were finding it difficult to submit the required documents within the stipulated time. They expressed concern that senior citizens, persons with disabilities, migrant workers, people in remote areas, and economically weaker sections could be excluded from the electoral rolls if the deadline was not extended.

They also said that the Booth Level Officers (BLOs) had not completed the distribution of application forms to all the households.

They urged the ECI to conduct awareness campaigns at the village, ward and booth levels, display mapped voter lists publicly, and establish special assistance centres for elderly voters, women, persons with disabilities and migrant workers.

The resolution also sought clear guidelines for married women shifting their voter registration after marriage, and stressed that no voter should be deleted from the rolls without proper verification and prior notice. The leaders called for the revision process to be conducted in a transparent, fair and non-discriminatory manner to safeguard every eligible citizen’s right to vote.
