Quarterback-needy NFL teams are beginning to do their homework on Brendan Sorsby, but ex-Jet Damian Woody is sending a warning to all prospective teams.
“We know in an NFL locker room, a 53-man roster, everyone is not going to be a good guy. You’re going to have some junkyard dogs in your locker room. But every football player out there knows, betting on games and betting on your own games is a cardinal sin,” Woody said on Wednesday edition of “Get Up” on ESPN.
“For me, if I’m in the locker room, no way in hell do I want a guy with the ball in his hand playing the most important position knowing that I don’t know what his intentions are.”
Sorsby requested a Supplemental NFL Draft to have the option after his college career was destroyed due to his gambling addiction, and, admittedly, betting on games involving his own college team.
Sorsby, who was going to play for Texas Tech this upcoming season, was rated as the No. 3 quarterback in the 2027 NFL Draft by ESPN’s Matt Miller behind Arch Manning and Dante Moore.
It is unclear at this point if Sorsby will indeed be granted a supplemental draft. It would set up an intriguing decision for NFL teams, if he is approved.
An NFL executive told Albert Breer that Sorsby “looked better than Ty [Simpson] on tape,” leading some to believe he could be selected with a first or second-round pick.
Simpson was drafted by the Rams in the first round in this year’s NFL Draft.
There is still a risk that Sorsby gets hit with an NFL suspension, which could diminish his value.
The Cardinals could be among the teams that could be interested in taking a shot on Sorsby, but any team doing so runs the risks that Woody warned about.
Sorsby, who played for Indiana and Cincinnati before transferring to Texas Tech, was found to have wagered approximately $90,000 over four years using sportsbook accounts registered to friends and family, and making at least 2,900 total bets.
Sorsby was expected to make a sum of over $3 million in NIL money this season before the gambling scandal came to light, and checked himself into rehab.
