If you flew through all eight episodes of Every Year After in just a few days, you’re not alone.
Your trip to Barry’s Bay may be over (for now), but Carley Fortune — the author of Every Summer After — isn’t going to leave you stranded on the dock.
When she stopped by DECIDER’s studio to talk about the new series, we asked the #1 New York Times bestselling author to share some book recommendations specifically for fans of the show who may be looking for an on-ramp to the world of romance novels.
Whether you’re looking for something that spans multiple timelines like Every Summer After, find yourself craving a sweet friends-to-lovers story like Sam and Percy’s, or it’s just the summer vibe you’re after, one of Fortune’s recommendations will be perfect for you.
You might just find your new favorite book.
“I am a major Tia Williams fan,” Fortune said. “I will read every single book that she writes.”
“One of my favorites — and it’s also a story that is told in past and present timelines, like Every Summer After — is called Seven Days in June. It’s really, really emotional and smart. It’s about authors who first meet as teenagers, and they spend this very tumultuous week together, and it’s I think it’s just a fantastic story.”
“You should read Emily Henry novels,” Fortune added. “I love Beach Read, but any of her books are wonderful.”
Beach Read (which is now in production as a soon-to-be film!) is Henry’s debut adult romance novel. It follows polar opposites January Andrew and Gus Everett, authors who spend a summer living in neighboring beach houses and strike up a deal to force each other out of a creative rut: he’ll spend the summer writing something happy, January will write the next Great American Novel and they totally won’t fall in love in the process.
Of course, Fortune is going to recommend checking out her own books, too! If you binged Every Year After and haven’t read her other titles, you should! Especially, “One Golden Summer, which is kind of a follow up to Every Summer After,” Fortune says.
When she was 17 years old, photographer Alice took the photo that would change her life: three teenagers in a bright yellow boat on the lake in Barry’s Bay. Years later, she returns to Barry’s Bay for a peaceful summer with her ailing Nan, and almost immediately, reconnects with one of the people in her life-changing photo: Charlie Florek, all grown up.
Every Year After is now streaming on Prime Video.
