George Kittle sends warning to teams pursuing Brandon Aiyuk

The San Francisco 49ers have made their stance quite clear on the drama that has ensued between the team and wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk.

Aiyuk is in the midst of a four-year, $120 million contract with the 49ers, but has been sidelined for nearly two years after tearing his ACL and MCL in his right knee in October 2024 in a Week 7 game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

The strained relationship appeared to fester for several months after Aiyuk’s ongoing contract saga ahead of the 2024 season and seeped into the offseason when the 28-year-old skipped several rehab sessions. Aiyuk then cut off all communications with the team, which resulted in the team voiding roughly $27 million in his future guaranteed money.

In January, 49ers general manger John Lynch said Aiyuk had played his last snap for San Francisco.

“I think it’s safe to say that he’s played his last snap with the Niners,” Lynch said. “It’s unfortunate. A situation that just went awry. And I will look long and hard at what could have been done differently, but sometimes it just doesn’t work out. And I think that this was a case where that happened.”

Aiyuk’s most recent stunt included an Instagram story posted on Father’s Day, which featured the wide receiver saying “Go Commanders!” His intentions have been clear, but there has yet to be any resolution surrounding the situation.

On the Pardon My Take podcast, tight end George Kittle weighed in on the Aiyuk situation and sent a cryptic warning to any team interested in the wideout.

“The last time I saw Aiyuk was, call it Week 6, 7, or 8. I don’t really know,” Kittle said. “I used to make it a habit of mine to go out early in the morning before meetings to watch him train because he’d always be out there early, and I watched him run over 22 miles an hour and stop on a dime. So, he’s still got it, or at least that was a year, eight months ago, so I don’t really know. But you guys have fun with that, I guess…You have fun with all that comes with it.”

It’s unclear what Kittle meant by his stark comments, but the situation has evidently affected the 49ers and their plans for the future. As for teams interested in Aiyuk, the Arizona State product has been linked to the Washington Commanders, a team that has an offense headlined by former Sun Devil quarterback Jayden Daniels and ex-49ers teammate Deebo Samuel play.

Aiyuk averaged 58.5 receiving yards with no touchdowns prior to his injury, so there are several looming questions regarding his abilities on the field. Regardless, the fallout in San Francisco will be remembered as one of the most brutal player-team standoffs in NFL history.
