A meeting of environmentalists, farmers’ organisations, heritage experts, progressive groups and Kannada organisations will be held in Mysuru on Thursday to deliberate on the State government’s reported proposal to organise a Kambala (buffalo race) as part of this year’s Dasara celebrations.

Convened by Parisarakkagi Naavu, the meeting is scheduled for 3.30 p.m. on Thursday at Jaladarshini Guest House.

In a press release, the organisation’s General Secretary, Parashurame Gowda, said the reported proposal to introduce Kambala—a traditional buffalo race native to Karnataka’s coastal region—into Mysuru Dasara has raised concerns among environmentalists, heritage conservationists and sections of civil society.

The organisation contended that Mysuru Dasara, with its centuries-old history, distinct cultural identity and global recognition, should retain its unique character. It argued that incorporating festivals or competitions that are not indigenous to the region could dilute the legacy and heritage of the iconic celebration.

The release also flagged environmental concerns, alleging that hosting a Kambala event could require felling trees and spending crores of rupees on infrastructure to accommodate spectators and conduct the race.

Among those expected to participate in the meeting are Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha (KRRS) State president Badagalapura Nagendra, retired Major General Sudhir Vombatkere, Belavala Foundation’s Dr. Ramakrishnappa, historian Prof. N.S. Rangaraju, and representatives of environmental, farmers’, progressive and pro-Kannada organisations.

The organisers have appealed to citizens to participate in large numbers in the meeting, describing it as a forum to discuss ways to preserve Mysuru’s environment, cultural heritage and the unique identity of the Dasara festival.
