Rains in the catchment areas of Hyderabad’s twin reservoirs and the likely increase in reservoir levels have prompted the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply & Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) to initiate water release from the Himayat Sagar reservoir on Sunday.
According to the Board, the inflows into Himayat Sagar are expected to increase following the India Meteorological Department’s forecast of continued rainfall in the catchment region. To regulate the reservoir’s water level and ensure public safety, the flood gates of Himayat Sagar were lifted at 6 p.m.
In the initial phase, officials said a maximum of 1,000 cusecs of water was being released downstream and the discharge would be reviewed based on the volume of inflows and prevailing weather conditions.
As of 5 p.m. on Sunday, the reservoir for a capacity of 2.521 tmc and full reservoir level of 1763.50 ft was holding 1762.25 ft and 2.334 tmc water.
Board Managing Director K. Ashok Reddy has directed officials, along with the Hyderabad and Rangareddy district administrations, HYDRAA, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), and the police department, to remain on alert during the release operation.
Residents living along the downstream areas have been advised to exercise caution and avoid venturing near the water channels.
