Health Minister K. Muraleedharan will visit the Government Medical College Hospital, Parippally, on July 6 to assess its current operational status. The upcoming high-level visit is aimed at addressing the severe infrastructural deficiencies and operational challenges that have long plagued the healthcare institution, following growing public demand for immediate government intervention.
“Despite the ESI Corporation handing over a fully equipped hospital facility to the State government years ago, the available resources and advanced medical apparatus have not been fully utilised. The institution has faced severe criticism over the years for failing to create essential posts or fill critical vacancies for doctors, nurses, and paramedical staff, which has significantly hindered its ability to function at a proper medical college standard,” said N.K. Premachandran, MP.
He pointed out that the operational gaps are particularly evident in trauma care. “Despite the hospital’s strategic location adjacent to the National Highway, it currently lacks the necessary facilities to perform emergency surgeries for accident victims. Furthermore, the establishment of functional super-specialty departments has stalled, and the few services that were introduced remain severely crippled by an acute shortage of specialised staff and equipment,” he added.
He pointed out that patients arriving at the medical college with critical or life-threatening conditions are routinely referred to other distant hospitals. “The Health Minister’s inspection on July 6 is expected to focus on breaking this administrative deadlock, streamlining staff recruitment, and upgrading the facilities to ensure the public receives reliable, tertiary-grade medical care,” he said.
