The Petbasheerabad police arrested a 25-year-old man for impersonating a police officer and extorting money from inmates of a girls’ hostel in Suchitra Junction.

The accused, identified as Pandi Yadagiri alias Anil Kumar, is employed as a security supervisor at a private firm. He is a resident of Mulugu mandal in Siddipet district.

The case came to light after Guduru Vijay Kumar, proprietor of Monida Sree Girls Hostel, lodged a complaint stating that a man dressed in a police uniform had entered the hostel late at night, threatened the inmates with false criminal cases and demanded money from them.

During the investigation, police found that the accused had previously worked as a casual labourer with the Mahankali traffic police, where he became familiar with police procedures. Police said he later procured a police uniform, accessories and a motorcycle and began posing as a police constable to extort money.

Investigators said the accused had earlier targeted a girls’ hostel in Dundigal and had also allegedly stopped motorists along the Petbasheerabad–Medchal highway, posing as a traffic police constable and demanding money by threatening them with traffic violation cases.

Police said that around 15 days before the present incident, the accused had visited the Suchitra hostel and instructed the management to ensure the premises were closed by 10.30 p.m. every night. On the night of June 29, he returned wearing a police uniform, threatened the inmates with false criminal prostitution cases, seized their mobile phones, photographed them and demanded ₹5,000 to avoid police action. He collected ₹2,000 before leaving.

During the arrest, police recovered ₹2,000 in cash, a police uniform comprising a khaki shirt, trousers, belt, nameplate and jerkin, a mobile phone, a motorcycle, a pouch and a toy gun.
