YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) president Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy on Wednesday declared that the Mangalagiri-Vijayawada-Guntur (MAVIGUN) proposal would be a major election issue for his party in the 2029 Legislative Assembly elections.
“The YSRCP will take the proposal directly to the people and seek their mandate,” the former Chief Minister said while addressing the media, and reiterated that the party would continue campaigning for MAVIGUN as an alternative development model for Andhra Pradesh.
Intensifying his attack on the ruling coalition government, he alleged a sharp deterioration in law and order, political misuse of the police and large-scale corruption in the Amaravati capital project.
“MAVIGUN is a practical and economically viable alternative to Amaravati. The capital city project has become a conduit for corruption, with contractors receiving excessive payments at the expense of the public exchequer,” he said, and argued that “MAVIGUN has natural advantages and infrastructure that will significantly reduce development costs.”
He further urged the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) to clarify its stand before the Justice Balakrishnan Commission on reservations for Dalit Christians. Recalling that his government had passed an Assembly resolution supporting the demand, Mr. Jagan Mohan Reddy accused the TDP of attempting to polarise voters, while remaining silent on the issue.
‘Jungle Raj’
Coining the slogan, “Hey Ram… Save Andhra,” he alleged that the government was using the police to suppress political opponents. Referring to the recent incident at Undavalli, he claimed that the YSRCP leaders who had gone to meet the “protesting farmers” were attacked, while the police booked cases against the victims instead.
He alleged that false criminal cases were being filed against dissenters, describing the prevailing situation as “Jungle Raj.”
Mr. Jagan Mohan Reddy also questioned the investigations into the alleged custodial death of G. Sai Krishna and the death of a Dalit youth, Kranthi Kumar, alleging attempts to weaken both cases. He claimed that the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls was being used to delete YSRCP supporters from voter lists selectively.
The YSRCP chief also accused the government of weakening farmer welfare measures introduced by his administration, including Rythu Bharosa Kendras, crop insurance and input subsidy schemes. He said tobacco, mango and other farmers were facing severe distress due to falling prices and inadequate official support.
He also criticised the government’s excise policy, alleged expansion of the liquor mafia, and opposed the proposed beach shack policy.
