A local television news anchor is taking time off the air after she was involved in a boating accident alongside her husband.
Julie Nelson, the veteran anchor of KARE-TV in Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota, share the news on Facebook last week.
“Hi, I have some personal news to share … my husband and I were involved in a one-boat accident over the weekend,” she wrote on June 18.
“We were both treated for non-life threatening injuries, so I will be off the air while I take some time to heal and recover. I’m grateful for the outpouring of love and support that’s been shown to me and my family.”
Nelson, 54, has been co-anchor of KARE-TV’s 5, 6 and 10 p.m. newscasts since joining the station.
It was unclear when she would return to the airwaves.
Local news outlets including the Minnesota Star Tribune covered the accident, which took place on the night of June 13.
According to reports, the crash occurred on Balsam Lake near Pine Island in Wisconsin at around 11 p.m.
Earlier this week, Star Tribune claimed that Nelson’s husband, Kurt Krumenauer, was suspected of being intoxicated at the time of the crash.
But less than 24 hours later, the paper removed the story from its website. It published a subsequent piece explaining the reasoning for its retraction.
“The Minnesota Star Tribune has retracted an article about a Wisconsin boating accident involving Julie Nelson and her husband, Kurt Krumenauer,” the story read.
“The story, published June 22, was based on reporting that did not meet Star Tribune standards for accuracy, verification and editorial rigor, and the matter remains under review.”
The industry blog FTVLive flagged the item on its Patreon website on Wednesday.
Law enforcement officials in Polk County, Wis., confirmed to local media outlets that Nelson and Krumenauer, who works in commercial real estate, was injured.
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has launched an investigation into the accident, the Star Tribune reported.
“We do not comment regarding ongoing investigations,” the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources told The Post on Wednesday.
According to the Star Tribune, the initial article alleging possible boating under the influence “incorrectly attributed a quote to Matthew Pierce, a records coordinator with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.”
“The reporter mistakenly incorporated language from his own email correspondence with Pierce regarding a records request and presented it as a quote,” the Star Tribune retraction read.
“Pierce did not make the statement attributed to him.”
The Post has sought comment from Nelson, Krumenauer and KARE-TV.
