This newest drops landing in this weekend’s new movies on VOD lineup feel tailor-made for Father’s Day. We’ve got the World War II drama Pressure in the lineup, plus the survival thriller Deep Water, about a plane crash that leaves the surviving passengers vulnerable to sharks. And then there’s Finnegan’s Foursome, a movie that feels very Gen X-dad-coded. It’s got Ed Burns, it’s got golf, it’s got adult children mourning their dead parents. If you owned Tom Petty’s Wildflowers on CD in high school, this movie’s for you.
Finnegan’s Foursome is the latest film directed by Burns, who is responsible for some of the most quintessentially ’90s movies like The Brothers McMullen and She’s The One, and it stars Burns and Brian d’Arcy James as brothers who take a pilgrimage to Ireland to spread the ashes of their dead father, a former golf pro, and playing a round in his honor. The film’s cast also includes Erica Hernandez and Brian Muller.
These are just a few of the films that are available to watch on Amazon Prime Video, iTunes, YouTube, and through your cable service this week. Check out what movies are available to buy or rent on demand now.
Based on David Haig’s 2014 stage play, Pressure is a World War II drama focused on… the weather? Sort of! The film is the story of the real-life meteorologists James Stagg and Irving Krick (played by Andrew Scott and Chris Messina) who advised military strategists, including future U.S. President, General Dwight D. Eisenhower, here portrayed by Brendan Fraser, on attack methods for the Normandy Invasion. It’s a real Cantore Story, and if you get that reference, this movie is for you.
A couples months ago, the Netflix original film Thrash asked the question: what would happen if your town was flooded after a major storm, and then sharks infested those flood waters? This month, the film Deep Water, which just arrived on digital, asks the question, what would happen if your plane crash landed in the ocean, and sharks were infesting those waters, too? (Let’s call it the “It’s just one thing after another, huh?” genre.) The new survival thriller, directed by Renny Harlin, stars Aaron Eckhart and Ben Kingsley as the plane’s captain and co-captain who have to keep their passengers alive after dealing with the trauma of an emergency crash landing that attracts a pod of flesh-eaters who smell blood in the water.
