Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday (June 30, 2026) spoke with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian as Iran plans to start a week-long period of mourning for the state burial of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.The Hindu had reported earlier that the Iranian President had invited Mr. Modi to travel to Tehran but Mr. Modi was unlikely to travel to the West Asian nation for the state funeral. India will be represented by a delegation led by Bihar Governor Lt. General Syed Ata Hasnain (retd.) and Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita.
During the phone call, Mr. Modi welcomed the understanding reached between the United States and Iran on June 17 that has brought a fragile peace in the Gulf region. “President Pezeshkian briefed the Prime Minister on the recent developments in West Asia and the way forward. Prime Minister welcomed the understanding reached and reiterated India’s consistent position that all issues must be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy,” said a press note issued by the government.
The funeral of Ali Khamenei is expected to start on July 3 and continue till July 9 when the events covering Tehran, Qom and Mashhad will conclude. “Prime Minister reiterated the need for continued efforts to ensure lasting peace and stability in the region, and for safeguarding freedom of navigation and commerce,” stated the press note.
