While the 2026 U.S. Open has been all about Wyndham Clark to this point, it feels like Scottie Scheffler, the world’s No. 1 golfer, always has a shot at surging to the top of the leaderboard, as long as he’s within striking range by Sunday.

And Scheffler is certainly within striking range this weekend. It’s going to take a heroic effort on his part (or an epic collapse from Clark) for Scheffler to win what would be his first U.S. Open championship, but crazier things have happened in the sport.

Scheffler is typically pretty private when it comes to his family life. It’s known that he married his high school sweetheart, Meredith, in 2020, and that the couple has two children together (a son named Bennett, who was born in 2024, and another son named Remy, who was born earlier this year).

Because Scheffler doesn’t speak much about his family life, it’s always interesting to hear what he has to say when he does.

The most recent example of this arrived during an interview Scheffler did with PEOPLE that was published on June 17, one day before the 2026 U.S. Open began.

When speaking about his wife having to handle most of the at-home responsibilities while he’s on tour, Scottie said, “It takes a lot of work for me to be able to do this for a living, and it’s a lot of sacrifice for [Meredith]. To be able to celebrate those moments for both of us is really cool.”

He was referring to them being able to celebrate the final round of the U.S. Open being on Father’s Day. The celebration will be even sweeter for the entire Scheffler family if Scottie can win the tournament.
