The Secunderabad Cantonment Board (SCB) will begin operations of its long-awaited Animal Birth Control (ABC) centre from Wednesday as part of efforts to address the growing stray dog population in the cantonment area.
The decision was discussed during the recent board meeting after Malkajgiri MP Eatala Rajender and Secunderabad Cantonment MLA N. Sriganesh raised concerns over the increasing number of stray dogs and urged the Board to accord priority to the issue.
Responding to the concerns, SCB Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Arvind Kumar Dwivedi informed the Board that the ABC centre is expected to begin functioning from July 1 with the deployment of a veterinarian and a dedicated dog-catching team.
“Under the programme, stray dogs will be captured, sterilised in accordance with the prescribed ABC protocol and subsequently released in the same localities from where they were picked up,” he added.
The initiative is aimed at controlling the stray dog population through sterilisation rather than relocation, in line with the ABC Rules. The SCB expects the facility to strengthen its capacity to undertake systematic sterilisation drives across the cantonment area.
