Thirteen college buses were inspected by the Ibrahimpatnam Traffic Police during a safety drive at Sri Indu College of Engineering and Technology in Sheriguda, with officials identifying several deficiencies, including the absence of attendants on all buses, four drivers being over the age of 60, and one bus lacking an emergency exit door.
The inspection was carried out by Inspector Ch. Jitender Reddy and his team on the instructions of senior officers. Besides inspecting the buses, the police conducted a road safety awareness programme for students, drivers and the college management.
Officials examined the fitness and roadworthiness of the buses, along with vehicle documents, fitness certificates, emergency safety equipment and compliance with government regulations.
During the inspection, police found that all 13 drivers were not wearing the prescribed uniforms and that none of the buses had an attendant or helper. Some buses had insufficient tyre tread depth, while indicators and brake lights were not functioning on a few vehicles. Officials also found that some buses were not equipped with emergency hammers for breaking windows during emergencies.
The traffic police directed the college management to rectify all deficiencies immediately and prioritise student safety. They instructed the management to appoint an attendant for every bus, ensure drivers wear the prescribed uniform, comply with all safety standards and conduct regular road safety awareness programmes for students and drivers.
