The U.S. men’s national team is off to a strong start at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Heading into Thursday’s matchup against Türkiye, the Americans have already been guaranteed a spot in the Round of 32 after taking down Australia last week.
The USMNT has emerged a surprise contender in this year’s tournament and much of that success can be linked to head coach Mauricio Pochettino.

Pochettino isn’t American, but his acclimation into the culture and belief in the young core of USMNT players has played a pivotal role in creating interest amongst fans in the U.S.
Following the squad’s statement 2-0 win over Australia without star Christian Pulisic, Pochettino made a telling statement.
“Today, even if I am not American, after the game I was emotional,” Pochettino told reporters after the match.
“The fans were amazing. The warm reception in the way that they support us, in the way they celebrated the victory, they make it very emotional. The players were very emotional, too. I think it was an amazing and perfect connection between the energy from stands and the team.”
The 54-year-old from Argentina has evidently embraced American culture and has fallen in love with a popular fast food chain.
“People say Americans have no healthy food. Yes, you have healthy food, but also you have the food…Chick-fil-A. It’s amazing, no?” Pochettino said.

From eating fast food staples to listening to country music before practice, Pochettino is certainly going all-in for the USMNT’s run in the World Cup this year.
