A 25-year-old wild makhna elephant was found dead near a coffee plantation close to the Karepalya anti-poaching camp in the Punajanur wildlife range of the BRT Tiger Reserve on Wednesday.
According to Forest Department officials, the carcass was discovered in a coffee estate located about 50 metres from the forest boundary. Preliminary observations suggest that the elephant may have succumbed to injuries sustained during a fight with other elephants.
Soon after receiving information about the incident, forest officials rushed to the spot and conducted an inspection. A post-mortem examination was carried out in the presence of the Deputy Conservator of Forests (DCF), BRT division, the Assistant Conservator of Forests, and veterinary officers.
To ascertain the exact cause of death, samples of the elephant’s internal organs have been collected and sent to a laboratory for detailed analysis. The cause of death will be known once the laboratory reports are received.
