SEATTLE — The Freeman family has always had a flair for big moments in Seattle.
Nearly three decades ago, Packers wide receiver Antonio Freeman terrorized the Seahawks in the Pacific Northwest. During one game in 1996, Freeman — who enjoyed a successful nine-year NFL career — had 108 yards and caught two touchdown passes at the old Kingdome.
On Friday afternoon, his son added another chapter to the family story.
Only this time, the cheers came from a soccer crowd.
“It’s a full-circle family moment,” USMNT defender Alex Freeman said. “He can be great, but I can be great in my own way. It’s amazing to have a dad who’s successful and can mentor me.”
With the United States searching for a knockout blow against Australia, Freeman rose above the chaos inside the six-yard box and nodded home a crucial first-half goal that helped propel Team USA to a 2-0 victory at Seattle Stadium.
The win secured a place in the knockout rounds of the 2026 FIFA World Cup for the U.S. and put Mauricio Pochettino’s side firmly in control of Group D with six points.
“Alex Freeman has the potential to be one of the best players in the world at his position,” Pochettino said after the match.
For Freeman, who made his senior national team debut just a year ago, it was another remarkable step in one of the fastest rises in American soccer history.
At 21 years old, Freeman arrived at this World Cup as the youngest player on the U.S. roster.
He now leaves the group stage as one of its most important players.
The 6-foot-2 right back has become one of the engines driving Pochettino’s system.
Part defender, part midfielder, part attacker, Freeman is asked to cover enormous stretches of grass while simultaneously helping build attacks and shutting down opposing wingers.
Yet nothing about Freeman’s play suggests a player feeling the weight of the moment.
Against Paraguay in the tournament opener, he was arguably the United States’ unsung hero.
He won duels all over the field, helped launch the sequence that led to the opening goal and later added an assist in the 4-1 victory.
His combination of size, athleticism and composure stood out on the sport’s biggest stage that often exposes young players.
“I think he’s got a fantastic future,” said Folarin Balogun, who won Man of the Match for the second consecutive game. “He’s a very humble kid. He’s doing it on the biggest stage. I think he’s got a bright future.”
Against Australia, he took another leap forward. Literally.
After Sergiño Dest’s shot was blocked and ricocheted high into the air, Freeman attacked the ball with confidence, beating Australian goalkeeper Patrick Beach to the spot, and headed it into the back of the net.
The initial celebration was interrupted by an offside flag, but after a lengthy VAR review, the goal was awarded and the stadium erupted for a second time.
“I thought it was offside,” Freeman admitted. “When it was ruled a goal, I looked back and saw all my teammates running after me. So I had to run away from them. It was a very emotional moment.”

Born in Baltimore, Freeman spent his formative years in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., where he was a part of the Orlando City Academy.
He exploded onto the MLS scene in 2022, earning Best XI honors, Young Player of the Year recognition and an All-Star selection.
His breakout season in 2025 earned him a move to Villarreal in Spain, where he quickly forced his way into the lineup.
Now he is doing it on the sport’s biggest stage.
“I’ve worked my whole life to be able to sing the national anthem in front of a home crowd of supporters playing for my country,” Freeman said. “I can’t be more grateful to be able to do that and to score … it just makes me so happy.”
The United States entered this World Cup searching for breakout stars capable of helping carry the program into a new era.
Two matches into the tournament one of those breakout stars is a fearless 21-year-old whose last name already carried weight in the Emerald City long before he ever stepped onto the field.
