England vs New Zealand: Sonny Baker lifts the mood by staying true to himself

Unlike his fellow debutant wicketkeeper James Rew, who was told he was replacing Jamie Smith in the sauna on Tuesday, Baker had a couple of days to prepare for his Test bow after Ollie Robinson’s knee scan on Saturday.

A keen note-maker, Baker has a book with pointers to remember for each battle but also how to deal with the stress that comes from a debut on cricket’s biggest stage.

A lot of it is about embracing the occasion.

“Even last night I was struggling to eat, and fuelling as a fast bowler is super important,” he said. “This morning I felt the anxiety build up in my stomach.

“I was pretty honest with people that I was pretty nervous going into the day. Once you start warming up, everything goes away and you get stuck in.”

With England naming three debutants in their XI for the first time in nine years, the pre-match huddle went on longer than some first dates.

Rew received his cap from a fellow Somerset batter Marcus Trescothick, while Jordan Cox got his from Essex legend Nasser Hussain.

Baker, a self-proclaimed fast-bowling geek, was handed his from another in the county he has just joined – former England quick Steven Finn.

“The cap presentation was more emotional than anything else, seeing how proud my parents were,” he admitted.

“I was trying not to get emotional in front of the rest of the lads, but I was struggling a bit.”

When Baker’s first wicket-taking over was complete, perhaps with the emotion bubbling, he initially headed the wrong way, turning for deep third rather than his fielding position of long leg.

After correcting, he was greeted by a section of The Oval crowd rising to applaud him.

“That was proper,” said Baker. “In T20s and stuff, when there’s music on you don’t really sense the crowd quite as much.

“When it’s silent and there’s just a trumpet in the background, you really feel the crowd getting behind you.”

It is not lost that Baker’s Test debut came on such an unusual day.

Three debutants, one man holding more caps than the rest of the team combined, and the captain more than 250 miles away with his career in the balance.

Far from ideal, but England appeared upbeat and tight-knit throughout.

“It’s actually been great,” added the Devon-born Baker. “The lads have tried to put that behind us and deal with the situation as it is.

“The relaxed nature of the environment really helps from a nerves point of view.”

Soon after, Baker’s duties on day one were done as he turned to another sporting event.

“The rest of the lads will be fuming if I take much longer,” he said as he left the stage.

There was World Cup football to watch.

The past week, with everything surrounding the Ben Stokes situation, has been a dark week for English cricket.

This was a Sonny day.

LA’s first ‘fire-resistant’ home can withstand blazes for hours

A new home built in the Eagle Rock neighborhood of Los Angeles is designed to withstand up to three hours of direct fire exposure — giving hope to Angelenos terrified of losing their homes to wildfires.

The home is slated as LA’s first Type 1 ADU — the highest fire-resistance classification — and is located just minutes away from where the Eaton Fire evacuation zone was.

The home is fitted with fire-resistant windows and glass.

“In the hills of Eagle Rock, Builtech Construction completed Los Angeles’ first known ICF (Insulated Concrete Form)-based ADU built to meet Type I standards, the highest fire-resistance classification under the International Building Code (IBC) and California Building Code (CBC),” Builtech Construction — the company behind the build — announced.

Builtech Construction is a California-based group that helps “California homeowners plan, harden, and build homes designed to better resist embers, radiant heat, and wildfire exposure,” according to their website.

The allegedly fireproof house is a two-bedroom, 1,150-square-foot home that only cost $410,000 to construct. Its windows are fire-resistant while the rooftop plumbing vent uses cast iron, which replaces the go-to plastic vent that melts and opens a fire pathway.

The ICF uses lightweight hollow foam blocks filled with concrete in order to form a solid, non-combustible wall.

The construction was allegedly completed in only 10 days by only a handful of people.

“Honestly, I was surprised by the price; it came in right around what we were quoted for a regular wood home… Knowing our family has a home that can stand up to fire and whatever else comes, that peace of mind is priceless,” the homeowner said.

After the devastating Eaton and Palisades Fire killed at least 28 people and destroyed more than 16,000 structures in early 2025, the project comes at a time when many California homeowners are searching for tangible ways to protect their families from future fire disasters.

SF Giants beat Braves 7-2 in Game 1 of doubleheader

ATLANTA — A little over 18 hours since Adrian Houser threw his last pitch of the bottom of the first, Robbie Ray started the bottom of the second with a grunt that bounced off the walls of a more than half-empty Truist Park early Wednesday afternoon.

In practice, Ray’s outing was pretty much just another start.

In reality, his 6 ⅓ shutout innings in a 7-2 win went down as only his fifth regular-season relief appearance of his career. And for a while, it looked like it might cost him a chance at a no-hitter.

Ray was set to start the Giants’ regularly scheduled second game of the series Wednesday night but was moved up to take over where things left off when the series opener was suspended the previous night following a delay of 1 hour, 52 minutes.

After pouncing on Grant Holmes the night before, the Giants were already up 3-2 when Ray threw his first pitch, and he wouldn’t allow an Atlanta hit until the seventh inning.

It was quite the reversal from their pitching fortunes early Tuesday night, after Houser was rocked for two runs in the first inning, including a 473-foot tank from Drake Baldwin.

The Braves stacked their lineup with lefties against Houser, which may have paid off initially but came back to bite them when it was Ray, a lefty, who took over when play resumed.

The Giants’ bats, on the other hand, picked up right where they left off after jumping on Holmes for seven base runners and three runs during the downpour Tuesday night.

Rafael Devers, Jung Hoo Lee and Willy Adames slugged solo shots that allowed Ray to pitch with a comfortable lead for most of the afternoon. Devers started things off with his 10th of the season in the fifth, and Lee went back-to-back with two outs to make it 5-2.

Adames added on another insurance run in the eighth with his 12th of the season.

What it means

Thanks to Ray’s strong effort, the Giants are able to enter the second game of the doubleheader and look ahead to the rest of their road trip without too many concerns about their pitching depth.

They won’t however, have a fresh closer after Tony Vitello called on Caleb Kilian in a non-save situation. Dylan Smith was in line to finish the game as the only reliever the Giants used, but he issued two consecutive walks with one down, prompting Vitello to bring in his closer with a five-run lead.

Who’s hot

Despite allowing five runs in his last start, Ray looked to be moving in the right direction with his longest outing in more than a month and only his second this season without issuing a walk.

Ray took that progress and built on it against the Braves.

The only base runners Atlanta mustered against Ray until Austin Riley led off the seventh with a double were two lone walks, neither of which made it past first base.

Leaning on his sinker over his four-seamer, Ray’s eight strikeouts were his most in 15 times toeing the rubber this season and his 6 ⅓ innings of relief represented his second-longest outing of the year — his first time completing six or more innings since May 8.

Who’s not

It had only been a little more than a week since Adames’ last home run, but it might as well have been a year. Between his two-homer game in the Giants’ opening game at Wrigley Field and his solo shot in the eighth, Adames had been 1-for-31 with 11 strikeouts.

Likewise, Devers’ home run was also only his second of June while batting an equally poor .161 (9-for-56). Neither player is exactly making it easier to move their hefty contracts as the Giants reportedly listen to offers for their highly paid, underperforming stars.

Up next

A short break, and then the second game of the double header. Both teams can add a 27th player, and the Giants used their roster spot on Carson Whisenhunt, who will make his first start of the season in the nightcap against the Braves’ regularly scheduled starter, JR Ritchie.

Whisenhunt was named the Pacific Coast League’s pitcher of the month for May and is 5-2 with a 3.65 ERA in 14 games (13 starts) — 2.76 dating back to his last start of April.

Lt. Col. Gabriel “Journee” Estrella, one of the eight people killed in Monday’s B-52 crash at Edwards Air Force Base in Southern California, told his wife before boarding the aircraft how important the mission was to him.

Estrella, 40, a weapons systems officer assigned to the Air Force Operational Test and Evaluation Center, had been eagerly anticipating the mission and spoke about it with excitement before the fatal flight, his wife Brianna Nichole revealed in a heartbreaking social media post.

“This particular test flight was one he had been looking forward to,” she wrote. “He told me, ‘It’s a once in a lifetime flight, babe.’

Nichole ended her tribute with an emotional message to her husband.

“I don’t know how I will live each day without you. You were my best friend,” she wrote. “I will love you forever, babe. Thank you for the beautiful life we built together. Stay with me. Walk beside me.

“Our hearts are shattered,” she added. “He is, and always will be, our hero.”

Military officials have not yet released details on what caused the crash, which occurred during a test flight at Edwards Air Force Base, located around 100 miles northeast of Los Angeles. An investigation is underway.

The other victims named Wednesday include Col. Gregory Watson, 53; Retired Lt. Col. Miles Middleton, 50; Maj. Alexander Davis, 34; Maj. Robert Dee, 40; Maj. Brad Hovey, 35; Jeromy Smith, 32; and Christopher Rischar, 41, according to a statement from Edwards Air Force Base.

Karen Bass orders probe into dog shot by LAPD at Knicks celebration

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass ordered a full investigation into the fatal police shooting of a beloved family dog by officers responding to a distress call just minutes after its owners celebrated the New York Knicks’ NBA championship victory.

“Every life lost to violence is a tragedy, and we know that the devastating loss of Jameson will be felt by his family forever,” Bass told The California Post in a statement Tuesday.

Jameson — a 2-year-old mix of golden retriever, Saint Bernard and poodle — was fatally shot by an LAPD officer. abc7

“I have spoken directly to the Chief to ensure a full investigation and accountability for any wrongdoing.”

The mayor said she would closely monitor the probe into the shooting, which has sparked outrage across Los Angeles and fueled a massive fundraising effort for the dog’s grieving owners.

“I will make sure that the investigation is thorough and transparent so that Angelenos have a complete understanding of what happened to Jameson and this family,” Bass added.

Jameson — a 2-year-old mix of golden retriever, Saint Bernard and poodle — belonged to diehard Knicks fan Marie Marseille and her family. The curly-haired pup had been celebrating the team’s championship win Saturday night at Marseille’s Canoga Park apartment and was even photographed wearing a blue Knicks shirt shortly before he was killed.

The celebration turned tragic when officers from the LAPD’s Topanga Patrol Division responded to reports of a screaming woman inside the apartment complex shortly after 8 p.m.

According to police, Jameson was with his owner when officers asked her to secure the large dog. Authorities said Marseille briefly shut the apartment door before reopening it, allowing Jameson to exit.

Officers alleged the dog then charged toward one of them, prompting an officer to open fire.

Cellphone video captured the chaotic aftermath as Marseille screamed in disbelief.

“Oh my God! Oh my God,” she cried. “I cannot believe this is happening. I cannot believe this is happening.”

The shooting has triggered a wave of sympathy online and in the neighborhood, where a memorial of flowers and tributes has begun growing outside the family’s apartment.

A GoFundMe campaign launched in Jameson’s memory had raised more than $170,000 as of Wednesday afternoon, far exceeding its original $10,000 goal.

“On June 13th, 2026, 10 minutes after celebrating the Knicks championship win, our dog was fatally shot right outside our home,” the family wrote on the fundraiser.

“Jameson was 2 years old, and he was taken from us too soon. Anyone who’s met Jameson would tell you he is the sweetest boy in the world.”

The family said the donations would help cover cremation costs and support their push for “Justice for Jameson.”

The LAPD said the shooting remains under investigation.

Anti-police activists rushed to condemn the shooting, demanding that the department immediately release body camera footage and identify the officers involved.

Disneyland’s historic New Orleans Square train station making comeback

Disneyland has reportedly been granted a permit to reconstruct a beloved, historic piece of New Orleans Square that was tragically scorched by a fire more than three years ago.

The path has now been cleared for the theme park to resurrect the New Orleans Square train station “radio house” as a 357-square-foot structure.

The original building caught on fire during a busy holiday season in December of 2022, when an after-hours fire broke out at the station. The charred ruins stood untouched and hidden behind scaffolding until it was finally leveled in 2025.

While nobody was hurt, the blaze gutted the small structure, which served as an employee break room.

The reconstruction won’t be as flashy as a new attraction or themed land, but Disney fans have welcomed the move as an effort to preserve the park’s history.

The new build will feature upgraded electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems, transforming the space back into a modern break room and restroom for workers, according to reports. Park officials also said that the exterior will look almost identical to the old, vintage building to preserve the land’s meticulous 19th-century aesthetic.

The building will has have a new ADA compliant pathway constructed over the train tracks, allowing for safe access from the platform to the break room.

The fire-damaged train station is based on a set from the 1948 Disney film “So Dear To My Heart.”

The scorched building was also used to film the “Two Brothers” section of the stage show “Great Moments With Mr. Lincoln” at Disneyland and The American Adventure at Epcot.

‘The Death of Robin Hood’ review: Miserable trudge with Hugh Jackman turns hero into a cold-blooded killer

movie review

THE DEATH OF ROBIN HOOD

Running time: 123 minutes. Rated R (strong bloody violence). In theaters.

Was it when Robin Hood shot an arrow through a boy’s eye socket or when Little John ripped off another man’s jaw?

Maybe it was the part when Robin slit a young woman’s throat and held her to the ground as she bled out.

But very quickly during the nauseatingly violent first couple scenes of the interminable “The Death of Robin Hood” did my mind and stomach completely reject all of director Michael Sarnoski’s high-on-its-own-supply film, even with more than 90 mostly insufferable minutes left to go.

The savagery recedes, sure, however the movie only goes from sick to sooty.

Boy, does this tiresome medieval drudgery think it’s clever.

You see, Sarnoski, who also wrote the screenplay, has flipped the folkloric character, played by Hugh Jackman, on his feathered cap by turning him from a benevolent outlaw into a cold-blooded killer. From swashbuckling Errol Flynn to “The Sherwood Forest Chainsaw Massacre.”

We learn in a “Romeo and Juliet”-ish narration provided by Jodie Comer’s icy Sister Brigid that there was, in fact, no one “more wanton and wicked than the murderous bandit Robin Hood and his Little John.”

In short: “Steal from the rich and give to the poor” becomes “Kill anybody with a pulse.”

In “The Death of Robin Hood,” the legend is turned into a cold-blooded killer. A24 via AP

There are plenty of excellent movies about horrible men and homicidal maniacs, and they hold our attention in a variety of ways. Psychological complexity that gives us insight into why they do what they do is a big one, and so is a captivating plot. Sometimes the evildoers win us over with humor and charisma.

You won’t find even a morsel of any of that at “Death of Robin Hood.” Sarnoski tries to get by on cinematography and brooding. That’s it. But stunning, misty Northern Ireland scenery and an offputtingly dour leading man are not enough to lift this trudge out of its murky pit of depression and lethargy.

Of course, because of the prestige that automatically accompanies an A24 release and the acclaim Sarnoski received for 2021’s “Pig,” cinephiles will dig like truffle hogs for buried profundity here. Don’t bother. This is little more than “Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey” with stars, a bigger budget and delusions of deeper meaning.

Robin (Hugh Jackman) is nearly killed, but instead wakes up in a sanctuary to heal. A24 via AP

The thin explanation for the switcheroo on Robin is that 13th Century Englanders only believe the man’s a hero because he invented his own glorified mythology to help him to better stab, gouge and behead.

That he’s proudly offed hundreds, maybe thousands of people has somehow not entered the village rumor mill.

Oddly pretentious, this is one of those annoying films that drones on about the weight and importance of storytelling rather than telling a weighty or important story.

Little John (Bill Skarsgård) and Robin Hood have killed hunderds, perhaps thousands, of people. A24 via AP

Jackman, looking like he’s about to herd two of every animal onto an ark, plays Rob, whose favorite hobby is brutality alongside his best mate. For instance, at one point we watch Little John (Bill Skarsgård) bash some poor guy’s brains out for a handful of bread. Hood’s not repentant or remorseful these days, he says, so much as “exhausted.”

During a fight when a father arrives to avenge the death of his sons, Robin hopes to finally give it a rest and die but is only gravely injured. Too bad! The movie could’ve ended early.

Instead he wakes up at a serene island sanctuary overseen by the calm and introspective Sister Brigid, where men are healed and children live at a safe remove from danger.

Jodie Comer plays Sister Brigid. A24 via AP

While he’s recovering, Little John’s young daughter Margaret arrives.

Protecting the helpless girl makes Robin see, sort of, that there are greater things in life than executing passersby. Ya think? So now we’ve reached the clichéd and obvious portion of the evening.

The latter third of the movie is, at least, an improvement because the viewer doesn’t want to vomit during it, and Comer brings her enticing secrecy to an underwritten character.

“The Death of Robin Hood” goes from sick to sooty. A24 via AP

Jackman, however, confuses intensity for feeling. The guy’s so tense he practically shakes as he works his muscles so hard to remain invested. He’s a collection of adjectives rather than a fully realized person.

And the ickiness doesn’t fully go away either. There are several blood-letting sequences as Brigid drains the red stuff from Rob into a bowl. Ewwww-de-lally.

Call me old fashioned, but I’d prefer some green tights and merry men to this sour crud.

Karl-Anthony Towns’ fiancee Jordyn Woods retiring lucky Knicks bag

Jordyn Woods said her lucky bag has “seen better days” after it made the rounds during the Knicks’ 2026 NBA Championship run, and that she’s “hanging it in the rafters” following the team’s championship parade on Thursday.

Woods, engaged to Knicks center Karl-Anthony Towns, accessorized with the sold out Tux Clutch Mini Summer Citrus in the color orange ostrich at nearly every game during the Knicks’ playoff run — including New York’s 13-game win streak — and it became an unofficial good luck charm for fans.

“I made this sample [of the bag] for the [NBA] playoffs from my brand, Woods by Jordan, and I started wearing it — we won a game, it became a superstition to me,” Woods said during an appearance on “TODAY with Jenna & Sheinelle” on Wednesday, with her bag in tow.

Jordyn Woods discussed her lucky bag during an appearance on “TODAY with Jenna and Sheinelle” on Wednesday June 17, 2026. YouTube/TODAY

“And then it really went viral when I couldn’t bring it to the game [the Spurs’ 115-111 Game 3 win over the Knicks] and it was the first game we lost in 50 days or something. So that’s when the phenomenon really came when we lost and I couldn’t bring my bag.

“After tomorrow I’m going to hang it in the rafters — the parade, it will come, and then I think she needs a rest. She’s been working overtime.”

Some Knicks faithful were nervous when Woods didn’t bring the bag to Game 3 of the NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden due to heightened security and a temporary no-bag policy because President Donald Trump attended.

Woods, who debuted the bag at the beginning of the playoffs in April, brought it to the Knicks’ 94-90 Game 5 victory over the Spurs on Saturday night in San Antonio, which secured their first championship in 53 years.

The bag is sold out on Woods’ website, along with two other colors, blue ostrich and black croco.

It can be preordered and is expected to ship in September, according to a notice, entitled “Lucky Bag Pre-Orders,” on the website, adding that there is “unprecedented demand” for the bag.

“The response to the lucky bag (Tux Clutch Mini) has been truly incredible, and we are so grateful for the overwhelming love and support,” it read. “We were honestly shocked by the extraordinary response.

“As a result we have had to set the product as “made-to-order” this way everyone who wants the lucky bag has an opportunity to purchase it.”

The Knicks’ championship parade will be held in New York City on Thursday, starting at 10 a.m. ET.
