Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister and Minister for Environment, Forest and Science & Technology K. Pawan Kalyan said ‘Nagara Vanams’ (urban forests)were the need of the hour in cities as they bring recreation and wellness together, and play a crucial role in protecting nature.
Virtually inaugurating 18 ‘Nagara Vanams’ developed at a cost of ₹36 crore, from his camp office on Wednesday, Mr. Pawan Kalyan said development should happen, but not at the cost of nature, and that people must have “green lung spaces” where they could breathe fresh air and spend quality time in the lap of nature.
He noted that as cities and towns were expanding rapidly, these urban forests would be helpful in maintaining ecological balance. The urban forests were raised with the State’s resources and funds mobilised from the Central government’s Nagara Vana Yojana.
Mr. Pawan Kalyan said red sanders conservation parks were set up at Koduru, Kailasagiri, and Madanapalle, and to reflect India’s ancient culture and traditional knowledge, and from biodiversity point of view, ‘Nakshatra Vanams’ (star forests) and ‘Rasi Vanams’ (zodiac forests) were being developed.
