Sunni leader Kanthapuram A.P. Aboobacker Musliar has urged the United Democratic Front (UDF) government not to take steps encouraging alcohol consumption in the State.

He was attending an event here to mark the founding day and centenary celebrations of the Samastha Kerala Jem-iyyathul Ulama on Thursday (June 25, 2026).

Mr. Musliar suggested that the government implement the prohibition. Criticising the move to reduce tax rates on low-volume alcoholic beverages, he said the proposal should be withdrawn. Mr. Musliar also urged the government to abandon the PM SHRI scheme. “Both the UDF and the Left Democratic Front should keep in mind that they had opposed it earlier,” he added.

Meanwhile, Mr. Musliar expressed support for the Home department’s ‘Operation Toofan’ campaign against substance abuse. He said the Samastha would implement schemes to make marginalised people self-reliant. It would oppose extremism, religious reformation, and anti-religious propaganda. Extensive campaigns would also be launched in the service sector, he added.
