The Karnataka government has amended the Karnataka Education Department Services (Department of Public Instruction) (Recruitment) Rules-1967 to allow for the recruitment of Computer Science graduates as teachers for classes 6 to 8 in government schools.
A total of 2,500 teachers will be recruited from the School Education Department and 463 teachers will be recruited to the PM Shree schools through Samagra Shikshana Karnataka (SSK).
The teachers have to be Science (Computer Science) or Bachelor of Computer Application (BCA) or Bachelor of Information Technology or Bachelor of Engineering or Bachelor of Technology in Computer Science graduates to qualify for these posts.
The candidates must also have obtained Bachelor of Education (BEd) degree from an institution recognised by National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) and must also clear Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) within five years of their appointment.
The State government has issued a gazette draft notification in this regard. Their salaries will range from ₹44,425 to ₹83,700.
Rules amended
Speaking to The Hindu, Vikas Kishor Suralkar, Commissioner of Public Instructions, said, “The C&R rules have been amended and a draft notification issued. The recruitment notification will be issued after the final C&R is arrived at.”
The State government has already started 309 Karnataka Public Schools (KPS) to provide quality education with necessary infrastructure from pre-school to class 12 under one roof. In addition, with the help of Asian Development Bank, steps have been taken to build 800 new KPS from the current academic year.
Under PM Shree schools
A total of 463 government schools are also being developed across the State under the PM Shree scheme. The computer education is mandatory for students in these schools.
Many schools now have computer labs. However, government had not yet appointed separate teachers for teaching the subject. Instead, some trained teachers who had already been appointed were teaching computer science. Since a large number of the KPS are being started this year, the Education Department has taken steps to create a separate C&R to hire the computer science teachers.
