A special court in Cyberabad has sentenced a 23-year-old man to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment in a case involving the kidnapping and repeated sexual assault of a minor girl. The court also imposed a fine of ₹3,000 and awarded ₹1 lakh in compensation to the survivor.
The convict, Mohd Afroz, an auto driver residing in Lingampally and originally from Karnataka, was found guilty in a case registered by the Chandanagar police in 2020 under Sections 363 (kidnapping) and 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code and Section 5 read with Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012.
According to the police, the case was registered on March 16, 2020 after the girl’s mother reported that her minor daughter had gone missing a day earlier. Despite searching for her, the family was unable to trace her, following which a kidnapping case was registered.
During the investigation, police found that the accused had become acquainted with the minor and lured her away by promising to marry her. He then sexuially assaulted her several times. Based on the survivor’s statement and the evidence collected during the investigation, additional charges of sexual assault under the IPC and the POCSO Act were invoked.
The accused was arrested on July 10, 2020, and a charge sheet was subsequently filed.
Following the trial, the special court for trial and disposal of rape and POCSO Act cases in Rangareddy district at Rajendranagar convicted the accused.
