Former Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) scientist Mylswamy Annadurai will be the new Chairman of the Curriculum Design Committee, replacing biologist Sultan Ahmed Ismail. In a Government Order, the School Education Department suppressed the previous G.O. and reconstituted the committee.
Apart from the new Chairman, the committee has retained all other experts, including Puducherry University professor K. Rajan, Indian Institute of Science Education and Research professor T.V. Venkateswaran, and University of Madras professor Rita John.
In early June, Mr. Ahmed had said in a social media post that he had been asked to resign from the post of curriculum design committee chairman. Thanking former Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, he said: “I just received an official call from the newly-formed Tamil Nadu government asking me to resign from this assignment as they are forming a new committee. All the best to the new team, and hope they follow the trend set by us.”
The G.O. said the tenure of the new committee would be three years, and it would be paid honorarium, travel allowance, and accommodation. So far, the department has brought out textbooks with the new curriculum for Classes I to III, and work is under way for the next few classes.
In 2025, the Tamil Nadu government had constituted two committees — a high-level Expert Committee and a Curriculum Design Committee — to revamp the State’s school curriculum.
