Two FIRs were registered by the Armoor police of Nizamabad after a dispute over the alleged unauthorised teaching of Urdu to primary school students led to tension at Bharat Chandra High School, also known as Bhavishya Darshini School, in Perkit village of Armoor mandal on Saturday.
The accused named in the first case are BJP Armoor Town president Mandula Balu and his associates, while the second case was registered against school correspondent Mallaiah, principal Ameer Khan and teacher Huma Hania. “Arrests are yet to be made as we are awaiting the findings from the Mandal Education Officer (MEO),” said an officer from the Armoor police.
The officer said that an enquiry was conducted following directions from the Additional Collector (Revenue), Nizamabad, and the Sub Collector, Armoor. A team comprising the Revenue Inspector, the in-charge Mandal Education Officer and local police questioned students, along with teaching and non-teaching staff, the principal, the correspondent and parents.
Police said the inquiry found that Huma Hania, who had recently been appointed as a Hindi teacher for primary classes (Classes I to V), had allegedly been teaching Urdu to primary students instead of restricting lessons to the prescribed Hindi syllabus without authorisation from the competent authorities.
Police said several students also confirmed that Urdu was taught during Hindi classes. “The principal and correspondent also admitted to receiving complaints from parents and stated that they had instructed the teacher to discontinue Urdu lessons,” added the officer.
The enquiry further revealed that Urdu notes written in students’ notebooks had allegedly been torn out by the school management after objections were raised by parents. Police said the alleged removal of the notes contributed to the law and order situation at the school.
The situation escalated on Saturday when Mandula Balu, accompanied by party workers including Nuthana Srinivas, arrived at the school and objected to the alleged unauthorised teaching of Urdu. During the confrontation, the principal was allegedly assaulted in the presence of police personnel.
Police said the case against the BJP workers was registered under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita relating to trespass, voluntarily causing hurt, grievous hurt and mischief. The second case was booked against the correspondent, principal and teacher under Section 196(1)(b) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for allegedly promoting enmity between different groups and acts prejudicial to the maintenance of harmony.
