One the year’s biggest films, Project Hail Mary, is now available to watch at home on a subscription-based streaming service. Unfortunately, it’s not a streaming service that a lot of people have: MGM+, a premium cable channel and streamer formerly known as Epix. But if you’re willing to wait another two months—until August 2026—we have good reason to believe that Project Hail Mary will be streaming free on Prime Video.
Project Hail Mary is the highly-anticipated film adaptation of Andy Weir’s popular 2021 sci-fi novel of the same name. The screenplay was adapted by Buffy veteran Drew Goddard, and directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (The Lego Movie, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse). Gosling, who also produced the film, stars as Dr. Ryland Grace, an astronaut who is sent into space to save humanity. The only problem? He can’t remember any of that. He wakes up on a spaceship, alone, with no memory of how he got there, where he’s going, or what he’s supposed to be doing.
Also starring Sandra Hüller, James Ortiz, and Lionel Boyce, Project Hail Mary was a box office smash hit, earning over $682 million at the worldwide box office, making it the third-highest-grossing film of 2026 so far. Project Hail Mary was first released in theaters by Amazon MGM studios in theaters in March. It hit video-on-demand in May. Last week, the movie began streaming on MGM+. But even though Amazon has owned MGM since 2022, Project Hail Mary is not yet streaming free on Amazon Prime. Read on to find out when the movie will stream on Prime Video for free.
Where to watch Project Hail Mary on streaming:
Right now, Project Hail Mary is streaming on MGM+, the premium channel previously known as Epix. MGM+ has been owned by Amazon since 2022, when Amazon acquired MGM. But MGM+ is still a separate streaming service from Amazon’s Prime Video, reserved for certain MGM movies like, apparently, Project Hail Mary.
MGM+ costs $7.99 a month, or $62.04 a year, for a subscription. Right now, from now until June 26, you can purchase two months of MGM+ on Prime Video for only $0.99/month (it will cost $7.99/month after two months).
If you don’t want to subscribe, you can also buy or rent the movie online. Prices may vary depending on which platform you use to buy the film, but on Prime, Project Hail Mary costs $5.99 to rent, and $19.99 to buy.
Project Hail Mary is not yet streaming on Amazon’s Prime Video for free, but we do expect to see Project Hail Mary streaming on Prime Video for free eventually.
When will the Project Hail Mary movie be streaming on Amazon Prime Video for free?
We don’t know exactly when Project Hail Mary will be streaming free on Prime Video, but we can guess that it might be sometime around mid-to-late August 2026.
It’s been a while since an Amazon MGM movie has gone to MGM+ before it goes to Prime Video, and it’s not entirely clear why Project Hail Mary did so. Deadline reports that the move was a “business decision” and that Project Hail Mary will follow the same release pattern as another Amazon MGM film, American Fiction: a full theatrical window, a full premium video-on-demand, and a full “pay 1” window streaming on MGM+. (“Pay 1” is the industry term for the period that follows a movie’s run in theaters, during which a subscription-based streaming service or cable channel has exclusive rights to the movie.)
Back before COVID, “Pay 1” used to mean at least 18 months. These days, that time frame has shortened to more like 4 to 8 months. In the case of American Fiction, the movie was released on premium video-on-demand two months after it opened in theaters, and was available to stream on MGM+ about three months after opening in theaters.
American Fiction finally began streaming free to subscribers on Prime Video on May 14 2024, about five months after opening in theaters.
Therefore, if Project Hail Mary is following the same release pattern, it will begin streaming free-to-subscribers on Prime Video about five months after the movie opened in theaters, which would be around mid-to-late August 2026.
Until then, you can stream Project Hail Mary on MGM+, or buy or rent Project Hail Mary on digital platforms.
