As much as she loved completing flips and stunts as a cheerleader, Tenley Hill felt a bit conflicted.
Why would she cheer for the game when she could play the game?
“There was always that little bit of when I was watching the football game,” Hill told The California Post, “thinking, like, I should be out there, I should be the one doing that.”

She had played girls’ flag football as a high school senior — giving up cheerleading to do so — but knew there was no such team when she arrived at UCLA.
So she started one.
Grasping the opportunity as if she was snagging a pick six, Hill created a club women’s flag football team on campus, rounding up sponsors, forming a schedule and assembling a roster.
Now the freshman has started a movement that she hopes will help elevate the sport to Division I status. That seems reasonable given the considerable momentum women’s flag football has enjoyed as part of a growing network of college teams, not to mention inclusion as a medal sport in the 2028 Olympics.
“It’s really been amazing, how fast it’s growing,” said Michaeltore Smith, the co-head coach of UCLA’s team. “We’ve been able to build something with these girls that’s been huge.”
Next year, UCLA will join the NIRSA Club Flag Football League, a collection of more than 40 7-on-7 teams across the country working in partnership with the NFL to stage a season starting in January and ending with a national championship in early May.
The team that Hill founded has already been a wild success beyond its 11-5 record that included a nine-game winning streak to end the season. She’s constantly getting DMs from high school prospects wanting to join the team. An Instagram page for the team went from zero followers to nearly 8,000 in months.

Everything about the rise of this team seems accelerated. Told that the formation of a club could take up to a year, Hill refused to accept that timetable.
“I was like, ‘No,’ ” she said, “ ‘I want this done by next quarter.’ ”
That meant she needed to quickly form a board and find coaches, among other things. Oakley, GameBreaker, Franklin and Seismic were among the brands that provided gear. A $10,000 donation from the Chargers Social Club provided funding for travel. As word spread about the team, new UCLA football coach Bob Chesney invited players to attend a spring practice.
Fielding a team wasn’t as hard as initially feared. So many hopefuls showed up that cuts had to be made to get down to a roster of 25.
The team held practices whenever it could find an open scheduling slot on the UCLA intramural fields, which doubled as the site of home games. One game against rival USC at the Chargers’ practice facility in El Segundo drew a crowd that might have exceeded 1,000.

For Hill, playing the game required the same sacrifice she made in high school. After being part of the UCLA cheerleading squad that backed the Bruins at the Rose Bowl, she had to give up that endeavor to get on the field herself.
Not that she minded.
“Given a choice over 100 times,” Hill said, “I’m going to choose flag football over cheer every single time.”
What makes the sport so special?
“That touchdown feeling,” Hill said, “is one of the greatest feelings that I’ve ever had — I play defense a lot and a pick six is probably one of my top-five feelings ever, so I just knew that I didn’t want to give that up.”
As much of a go-getter on the field as she is off it, she’s experienced that feeling plenty of times with her new team.
“She has an incredible nose for the football,” Smith said of Hill, one of 48 players picked for the 23-under team in the Select Bowl taking place this week at Galaxy Park in Carson.
Ultimately, beyond her own Olympic aspirations, Hill wants to capitalize on a generational run for women’s sports that now provides a path for those who love flag football to play it from high school to college to the Olympic stage.
“It’s just exciting,” Hill said, “to kind of be that person who’s setting the foundation for girls that are like me.”
It’s not an elimination game, but Czechia and South Africa will be desperate to get a result on Thursday after they both dropped their initial match at the 2026 World Cup.
Czechia fell, 2-1, to South Korea in a terrific game, while South Africa looked lifeless in a 2-0 defeat to Mexico in the tournament’s opener.
Both teams will fancy their chances to get something out of this game, but the bookmakers are siding with Czechia as a -130 favorite on the three-way moneyline.

South Africa’s issues against Mexico were of its own making. Bafana Bafana prefer to build up from the back when they’re in possession, but they kept turning the ball over in their own half and making life easy for El Tri. They were punished twice. It could have been worse.
Czechia found itself ahead of South Korea in the second half, but there’s hardly a person who watched that encounter that would argue that Nároďák deserved a better fate.

They struggled with South Korea’s frenetic pace and showed some serious vulnerabilities under pressure.
The good news is that it’s unlikely we’ll see South Africa buzzing around the field in the same way.
Not only is South Africa not built to be a high-pressure team, but Bafana Bafana are also in an interesting situation. Yes, they’d like to win, but a draw wouldn’t be the worst result for them, as they’ll get a crack at South Korea in the final match. That’s a winnable contest.
Czechia, meanwhile, will have Mexico in its group-stage finale, so they’ll be under immense pressure to get the win in this contest.
It would not be a shock to see South Africa put a real emphasis on tidying things up on their own end after a dismal display against Mexico, so I expect Hugo Broos to put plenty of bodies behind the ball.
That will put Czechia in control of the match, a position they aren’t all that comfortable with.

The plotters allegedly wanted to attack the UFC Freedom 250 event with explosive-laden drones and then pick off fleeing members of the crowd with a team of snipers.
Authorities told the outlet Alvarez was responsible for planning, organizing and directing the coordinated attack, which was thwarted by the FBI and local authorities.
“This illegal alien from Mexico should never have been allowed in our country,” DHS Acting Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis said in a statement to Fox News Digital. “He was the ringleader of a failed terror attack targeting UFC Freedom 250 at the White House.”
“He will face justice and swiftly be removed from our country,” she added of Alvarez.

Federal investigators are looking into 23 individuals who were allegedly part of the plot.
Those arrested face possible life sentences and a $250,000 fine if convicted of conspiracy to commit murder, with an additional maximum penalty of five years in prison for planning to commit an act ot violence on White House grounds.

MOSCOW — President Vladimir Putin on Thursday hailed Russia’s ties with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations as he hosted a summit intended to strengthen economic and political ties with the bloc.
The leaders who took part in the meeting in Kazan agreed to further expand “strategic partnership” between Russia and ASEAN nations that include Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, East Timor and Vietnam.
“It is a strategic partnership that serves as an essential stabilizing factor in the Asia-Pacific amidst geopolitical turbulence, contributing to the formation of a balanced security architecture and equitable mutually beneficial cooperation,” Putin said at the summit, which marked the 35th anniversary of Russia-ASEAN relations.
The summit’s agenda included exchanging views on global and regional issues, reviewing efforts to develop Russia-ASEAN ties and discussing areas and tasks for future cooperation.
Putin noted that Russia and ASEAN have “expanded the scope of practical cooperation in such areas as combating new security challenges and threats, as well as trade and investment, energy, agriculture, digitalization, science and technology, tourism, and humanitarian contacts.”
In a declaration signed at the summit, its participants reaffirmed their shared aspiration toward a “just multipolar world as guided by international law and the principles of the U.N. Charter to promote mutual benefit and respect for all states.”
They noted that the Kazan summit marked a “significant milestone” in Russia-ASEAN relations and pledged to maintain top-level contacts between Russia and the bloc to advance their “strategic partnership.”
Putin also held a series of bilateral meetings with ASEAN leaders during the summit, which he co-chaired with Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., whose country holds the association’s rotating presidency.
Some of ASEAN’s diverse member countries, including the Philippines, are seen to be aligned with the United States, while others have heavy trade and security engagements with China and Russia.
Several ASEAN members, including the Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam, have either imported Russian crude oil or expressed interest in purchasing it after global fuel prices soared in the wake of the war in Iran.

The 2026 NBA Draft is on the horizon, bringing one of the most significant dates on the league’s calendar.
Childhood dreams of making it to the NBA will be achieved.

Teams will turn draft assets into tangible players who they hope will contribute to winning in the short- and long-term future.
And in the background, teams will continue to explore the options that’ll help them achieve their goals for 2026-27.
For the Lakers, who have a first-round pick in the draft (No. 25), the opportunity the draft presents as it pertains to roster building can’t be whiffed on.
In their pursuit of assembling a roster that’ll be competitive against the 2026 Western Conference champion Spurs and 2025 NBA champion Thunder, the Lakers have two main options for their first-round pick: trade it for a player who’s ready to compete for a title now alongside Luka Doncic or select a prospect whom they plan to develop and hope will help now and in the future.
If the Lakers choose the latter, there isn’t a shortage of options.
Toward the top of that list should be UConn big man Tarris Reed Jr., who could contribute to winning from Day 1.

Why draft Tarris Reed Jr.?
Reed is one of the most physically imposing prospects in this year’s draft.
He weighed in as the second-heaviest player at the combine last month, and he used the combination of his strength, length and coordination to be one of the more dominant players in the paint in men’s college basketball.
Reed was an uber-efficient scorer inside of the 3-point arc in college. He shot 63.5% on 2s in his two seasons with the Huskies and led the Big East in field-goal percentage (60.7%) in 2025-26 after shooting 67% from the field in 2024-25.
He has great touch around the rim with both hands and is a skilled post player with a variety of finishes near the basket. As a more experienced prospect (136 college games played), Reed knows how to use his body to create good shots for himself by overpowering and moving through defenders.
Reed used those physical advantages to dominate the glass, averaging 5.8 defensive rebounds and 3.2 offensive rebounds per game in 2025-26. And he took advantage of those extra scoring opportunities by powering through defenses with putbacks.
He’s a strong screener who can play out of the short roll, finishing around defenders or spraying the ball out with simple passes after reading the defense.
Defensively, Reed’s strengths start with protecting the rim. He averaged at least 1.4 blocks in his last three college seasons.
He may not be the most traditionally athletic player, but Reed is a polished big man who should be able to contribute to an NBA team from Day 1 as a backup or third big man in the rotation for a good team.
Reed doesn’t need touches offensively to make an impact and should be at least solid in a lot of areas.
Areas of improvement?
Reed didn’t show to be much of a scoring threat outside of the paint, and his low free-throw percentage throughout college (58.2%) suggests that won’t change.
While he’s a switchable defender, he didn’t show to be an elite athlete by NBA standards in college, which could limit his effectiveness when guarding guards or even quicker forwards.
Reed can also improve with finishing at the rim when he can’t power through his defender.
Daveigh Chase’s former manager is urging fans not to donate to the late actress’ alleged boyfriend Roy Hernandez’s viral GoFundMe.
On Tuesday, John Ryan told TMZ, “Neither her family nor her close friends know who this person is.
“I can confirm Daveigh has a SAG trust account with more than enough funds to cover all medical and related expenses,” Chase’s longtime friend added.

Hernandez, however, insisted to the outlet that he plans to use the GoFundMe money to give Chase a “proper memorial.”
The fundraiser has, so far, raised $3,924 of its $5,000 goal.
Ryan alleged to The Post on Wednesday that Chase leaves behind millions of dollars of residuals, which he claims she was “too far gone” on heroin and fentanyl to claim despite his attempts to get in touch.
The “Lilo & Stitch” star died on Tuesday at age 35 after a case of meningitis and an infection in Chase’s blood led to her body shutting down over sepsis issues.

Hernandez wrote in his online campaign that Chase “wanted … a place where [they] could live together, feel safe and be happy.”

After describing her “critical” health scare, he wrote, “Now, more than ever, I want to give her that sense of home and peace in her final days.
“After a difficult childhood and a painful falling out with her family, Daveigh was bullied and struggled to find safety and happiness in downtown LA,” he claimed. “When we met, I promised to protect her and give her the love and comfort she deserved. Together, we found moments of happiness and hope.”
Hernandez also highlighted Chase’s iconic projects, including voicing Chihiro Ogino in “Spirited Away.”
She also is best known for being in “The Ring” and “Donnie Darko.”
Chase’s last acting role was playing Krissy Madison in “American Romance” in 2016.
She spoke to Interview magazine about her legacy years prior, saying, “I just want to make something that I love and people will respect. I want to do things that will change someone’s life, not something they’ll forget about tomorrow.”
